Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for November 30, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 1:44 PM GMT on November 30, 2010

Good Tuesday morning!

Wisconsin Forecast Synopsis
When's it going to snow? The answer is later today, then again on Saturday. This morning we have a strong large area of low pressure centered over northwestern Wisconsin which is generating all sorts of precipitation across the eastern half of the United States. The southern Mississippi Valley has been experiencing a variety of tornado watches last night and this morning, but around here we've had just mild air and rain showers yesterday evening, overnight, and into this morning. Unfortunately, a strong burst of colder air will be moving through the state from west to east this morning, so early morning high temperatures in the 40s will be falling through the 30s later this morning and in the 20s by this evening. The scattered rain showers will turn into a light mix, then light snow showers by this afternoon. They should end by this evening, and little if any snow accumulation is expected.

A new storm system looks to approach Wisconsin Saturday afternoon, which could generate our first shovelable snowfall of the season. As of now the weather models show the snow beginning Saturday afternoon, intensifying a bit Saturday evening, then turning into light snow showers on Sunday. It's too early to make numerical predictions as a shift in latitude, speed or intensity between now and then would alter the numbers, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on, especially if you're going anywhere this weekend. And if you still have winter preparedness on your household chore list, I suggest not putting that off too much longer!

Important Weather Statement: (Source: National Weather Service)
Fox Cities:
... Patchy dense fog this morning...
Light winds combined with a moist air mass early this morning has
produced patchy dense fog over portions of central Wisconsin and
east central Wisconsin. Motorists should use caution this morning
and prepare to slow down in these areas of dense fog where
visibilities are one quarter mile or less. Later this morning the
fog should diminish as a cold front passes over the area.

Wisconsin Weather Update for November 23, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 1:40 PM GMT on November 23, 2010

Good Tuesday morning!

Wisconsin Forecast Synopsis
After yesterday's weather wackiness of thunderstorms, hail, and even rare damaging November tornadoes in southeastern Wisconsin, today there's a rude reminder out there that we're about to enter December in a week. The wind has strengthened, shifted to the northwest, and cold air has regained control of our state. Now onto the question you want to know - will there be snow - the answer is yes, and it's coming tomorrow. Probably. The National Weather Service wrote up a nice summary of what's to come, which is copied below, but a storm will bring wind and a mixed bag of precip to Wisconsin tomorrow. If you're driving north or northwest, expect to see 3-5" of the white stuff and a slower drive, but if you're heading to Milwaukee, you'll probably just see mostly rain tomorrow afternoon and evening. In the Fox Valley, it'll probably start out as rain tomorrow afternoon, then change to a mix late in the day, with about 1-3" of slush possible by the time you wake up Thanksgiving morning. Luckily, the precip should be gone by then, so if you're not driving anywhere until Thursday morning, you should have a safer drive.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Important Weather Statement: (Source: National Weather Service)
Fox Cities:
... Hazardous travel conditions possible for the start of the
Holiday travel period...

A band of precipitation is expected to surge northeast across the
area Wednesday afternoon and evening. Currently... the best
estimate is that northern Wisconsin will receive mainly
snow... though the snow is likely to at least mix with sleet and
freezing rain before diminishing late Wednesday night. 3 to 5
inches of snow accumulation is expected by Thursday morning.

Across central Wisconsin... the freezing rain and sleet will
mix with the snow sooner. That should hold accumulations
down... with 1 to 3 inches of slushy accumulation is expected in
central Wisconsin.

Lake Michigan may provide just enough warming in east-central
Wisconsin to result in a mix of snow and rain for much of the
event. As a result... about an inch of slushy accumulation is
expected in the east-central part of the state.

If later data continue to support the current estimates of
precipitation type and snowfall accumulation... winter weather
advisories will be posted for much of the area later today. But
since the storm system that will generate the precipitation is
expected to be quite complex and is still in the formative
stage... the current estimates may still need to be adjusted
substantially with later forecasts.

Anyone with travel plans at the start of the Thanksgiving Holiday
should closely monitor later forecasts.

Today’s Forecast Grade: C

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today: Clouds and a few flurries early in the day, then expect a clearing sky. Much colder, though, as well as windy through early this afternoon. High of 30.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)
Appleton: Highs 27-29.
Madison: Highs 29-32.
Waukesha: Highs 29-31.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/mos/getall.pl?sta=KATW&sta=KMSN&sta=KUES

Tonight: Clear sky overnight. Lows near 20.

Wednesday: Becoming cloudy and windy with rain developing in east-central and southern Wisconsin. However, this precip is instead snow if you're traveling north or west for Thanksgiving. Rain changes to a mix or snow at times almost everywhere later tomorrow afternoon and evening, but amounts will vary depending on location as southeastern Wisconsin will probably stay above freezing throughout the day. In other words, go look at an online radar before you leave, if you're driving anywhere tomorrow. East-central Wisconsin could see 1-3" of slush tomorrow evening, with less than an inch of any accumulation type in southeastern Wisconsin. Highs in the mid- 30s east-central, upper 30s south. Chance of precip almost 100%.

Thanksgiving: Mostly cloudy, cold and windy. Maybe a few flurries. A good day to stay indoors and eat way too much food. Highs only in the low to mid- 20s.

This Weekend’s Outlook:
Conditions: Mostly cloudy and cold on Friday with more sunshine and warmer temperatures for the weekend.

Wisconsin Weather Update for November 19, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 1:37 PM GMT on November 19, 2010

Good Friday morning!

Wisconsin Forecast Synopsis
Through at least the next several weeks, I will continue to focus on what most of you likely care about most in regards to November and December weather: "Is it going to snow?" And to do this, I've got an internet connection and a 10-day GFSx weather model at my disposal. And the quick answer is, yes, we may see some snow soon, but probably not until late next Tuesday and Wednesday. While it doesn't look like a blizzard or anything, for many of us it could still be our first accumulating snow of the season. The other question some of you care about most is "Will I shoot a buck this year?", but the answer to that question is up to you.

For today, there's a storm system centered in northwestern Minnesota that's going to develop some snow north of Lake Superior, but should just keep Wisconsin cloudy, windy, and a little warmer compared to yesterday. We may see some light rain Sunday and Monday as the next storm system briefly brings warmer air to our region, but it will get cold again behind it, just in time for the snow we may see late Tuesday and Wednesday.Highs on Thanksgiving might only be in the low to mid- 20s! Not a typo!

Conditions: Some light rain on Monday, then some snow is possible Tuesday night and Wednesday. Could be enough to stick and measure, but we'll see.

Wisconsin Weather Update for November 16, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 2:05 PM GMT on November 16, 2010

Good Tuesday morning!

Wisconsin Forecast Synopsis
I could sit here and write all sorts of fluff this morning about high pressure to our east, a developing low out to our west, and cold air aloft, but all you really care about in November is if we're getting a snowstorm in the next few days. I get it. And your answer is no, we're not getting one this week. It's going to be a cloudy and cool week with occasional sprinkles or maybe even some flurries, but the big storm systems moving across the US this week are expected to miss Wisconsin to the south. Thank you, jet stream!

Wisconsin Weather Update for November 12, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 2:25 PM GMT on November 12, 2010

Good Friday morning!

Wisconsin Forecast Synopsis
After a brief 10-day break, my Weather Update blog is back, and just in time to bring you guys all the bad news in the world of weather. As many of you have already figured out, the cold air cometh, and many of us were greeted to either a cold rain or even a few ice pellets this morning. As a slow-moving low pressure circulation moves across our region, we can expect more cold rain showers through today, tonight, tomorrow, and gradually ending sometime on Sunday. Thankfully, around here the precip type should remain liquid, unlike our neighbors to the west, where southern Minnesota and far northwestern Wisconsin is under a Winter Storm Watch for Saturday. We may see a few snowflakes mixed in with the lingering rain on Sunday, but I don't expect it to stick except for maybe briefly on grassy areas.

Good Tuesday morning!

Wisconsin Forecast Synopsis
Today is going to feel very much
like yesterday, except for the fact that you won't have a case of the
Mondays and that you're going to head to your local polling place and
vote. High pressure is in place not just for our candidates, but for
our weather as well, and you can expect similar pleasant early-November
temperatures just above 50 and even more sunshine than we experienced
yesterday.  We may see a shower tonight at some candidates' results
parties as well as outside, but the sun will come out tomorrow...
eventually. We could experience our first light snow shower on
Thursday, but don't expect anything to stick quite yet.
