Yesterday was a partly sunny and seasonable March day with high temperatures in the mid- to upper 40s in east-central Wisconsin and in the lower 50s south.

Forecast Synopsis
Word sure has gotten around about this week being really warm. And it's true - much of this week should be very warm and mild. However, at this time of the year, the main reason we get really warm temperatures is because there's a strong wind bringing the mild air to us. This week, we have a nice upper-air jet stream ridge combining with a low pressure system to our west, which will bring warm southerly air into the upper Midwest this week. Our average high is 46 (Green Bay) and 49 (Madison), but by Thursday we could be 20-25 degrees above normal! The sunny, mild air does go away this weekend when rain and cooler air moves back in, but put away your winter coats as we shouldn't need them for a while.

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 25, 2010.

Yesterday’s Weather Recap
Yesterday was a rather outstanding day of March weather across Wisconsin. We had lots of sunshine and high temperatures in the mid- to upper 50s. A couple spots around Wisconsin even hit 60 yesterday!

Forecast Synopsis
I think today is going to feel like one of those late November days when a strong wind brings much colder air into our area, but there's not quite any snow on the ground yet. Thankfully our snow has already come and gone for the season (hopefully!) and mild air is again right around the corner.
A low pressure system currently located in northern Arkansas is bringing showers and storms to much of the central part of the nation and is responsible for the clouds many of us are seeing this morning. A cold front stretching from a separate low in southeastern Ontario is moving across central Wisconsin right now, and is attempting to clear out the clouds that covered us overnight. Behind this front is colder air along with a new area of high pressure, centered over southern Saskatchewan, and this high should keep us dry through tomorrow. A new developing low may bring us a few rain showers on Saturday but I don't expect it to be a big deal or anything. Look for mild weather to return by around Tuesday of next week with highs in the 60s a good possibility.

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 22, 2010.

After Saturday night's rain/snow mix that moved through much of southern and central Wisconsin, we had a pretty nice Sunday with some sunshine and high temperatures in the upper 40s to near 50.

Forecast Synopsis
We have a mostly quiet week to look forward to, thanks to an upper-atmosphere cut-off circulation in the southeastern United States. This circulation is going to block upcoming low pressure systems from moving past the Rockies and Plains states for a few days. Look for temperatures to be slightly above normal as well. The chance for rain showers returns Friday and this weekend as the blocking circulation gradually moves over the Atlantic Ocean, but nothing coming through looked really overwhelming or anything. Enjoy our first full week of Spring!

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 18, 2010.

We've had a terrific week of weather so far with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s and lots of sunshine. A few areas across Wisconsin even hit the mid- 60s yesterday.

Forecast Synopsis
Eagle-eyed Wisconsin weather watchers realize that the mild temperatures in the 50s and 60s we've had over the last few days are not, in fact, normal. You're not going to want to hear this, but the average high for today is only 39 (Green Bay) and 43 (Madison). To give you some perspective, a 20-degree swing the other direction from normal puts us around 20 degrees. So in other words, don't get used to these really nice temperatures quite yet.
Warm air swirling around a large area of high pressure to our south will give us one more day of mild weather, and today could be the warmest yet! A developing area of low pressure currently in the central Rocky Mountains is going to slowly move to the southeastern United States over the next few days. This will combine with an upcoming upper-air jet stream trough to bring colder Canadian air back to the northern U.S. We might even see a little bit of light snow Friday night or early on Saturday, which could amount to a couple of inches in southern Wisconsin. Temperatures near-normal return by Saturday.

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 15, 2010.

Well it took long enough, but that stagnant area of low pressure finally pushed east to bother New England instead of us, and the clouds and fog went with it. High temperatures yesterday were mostly in the 50s, although parts of northern, central and western Wisconsin actually broke 60. Any lingering snow cover we had before this weekend is pretty much gone now (except for those nasty piles of black snow in the corners!)

Forecast Synopsis
After a week of sunshine that was then followed by a week of clouds and fog, if the pattern continues we should be enjoying a lot of sunshine this week, right? Well, that's actually kind of going to be the case. Another slow-moving area of high pressure currently in the northern Rocky Mountains is going to gradually move toward the southeast. This high will block any storm systems from coming through, so we should stay dry for another few days. Our normal high is still only near 40 degrees, but we're going to stay nice and mild through the entire work week as mild air circulates around this high pressure system. A storm system finally arrives late on Friday, bringing rain and colder temperatures with it. Our temperatures will likely crash back to normal by the weekend, but the next few days do look very nice indeed!

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 11, 2010.

Weather Recap
Anyone hungry for pea soup? That's what the last couple days of weather have felt like around here. Areas of dense fog and scattered rain showers have forced us to turn on our windshield wipers, use just our low-beam car headlights, and say good-bye to most this winter's snow-cover. I even heard a couple rumbles of thunder overnight, which I think is more than I heard all summer last year! High temperatures have mostly remained in the 40s, although Green Bay hit 51 on Monday and Madison broke 50 yesterday.

Forecast Synopsis
A strong area of low pressure is centered over southern Iowa this morning. A cold front stretching southward from this low is continuing to develop showers and thunderstorms over much of the Midwest, south-central and southeastern United States. This nearly-stationary area of low pressure will continue to keep us cloudy and foggy with not-so-great air quality and scattered rain showers continuing through Saturday. This low is finally going to start moving again this weekend, so we should be out of this pattern by Sunday, and next week is looking mostly dry and seasonable at this point.

Fog will become more dense early this morning... Visibilities improved to around a mile from Waushara County across Outagamie and Brown counties between 500 am and 600 am...but by 645 am visibilities had fallen to a quarter mile or less in most places. The fog will slow ground and air travel this morning...so drive very slowly and be careful. Flights in and out of the Appleton and Green Bay airports may be delayed or cancelled...so check with your airline if you have air travel plans.

This advisory is in effect until 900 am Thursday.

The air quality index in the advisory area has reached the Orange

strenuous outdoor activities for a prolonged period of time.

Wisconsin continues to be in a very stagnant air pattern. Despite
higher wind speeds and precipitation... elevated concentrations of

The stagnant pattern will remain in place... so an air quality
watch is in effect until 1100 PM Thursday.

Southern Wisconsin:
Dense fog will continue to affect southern Wisconsin early this morning. The dense fog will reduce the visibility to one quarter mile or less. The fog has become more patchy along and south of a line from Spring Green to Madison to Milwaukee. More widespread dense fog is located north of this line. Early morning motorists should be prepared to slow down when they drive into one of these fog banks. An area of showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Illinois is moving to the north at 20 mph and will cross the border into far south central Wisconsin between 7 am and 8 am CST. These showers will affect the Darlington...Shullsburg...Monroe... Dodgeville and Beloit areas between 7 am and 9 am this morning. The area of showers will spread northward affecting the rest of the area later this morning into the afternoon.

An upper level disturbance moving across Wisconsin triggered
the first thunderstorms of the year at several locations across
central and northeast Wisconsin.

A thunderstorm was reported shortly before 330 am at the
Wisconsin Rapids Airport. In Appleton... a resident reported hearing
thunder several times around 330 am. At the Green Bay Airport...
thunder was heard shortly before 4 am. The last time a thunderstorm
was reported in Green Bay occurred on August 28... 2009.

We had quite the terrific weekend of weather! Wisconsin saw quite a bit of sunshine mixed with areas of morning fog that eventually burned off, but not before creating a 38-car-crash Friday morning near eastern Appleton. The light rain/mix that was expected Saturday night ended up just being a few overnight clouds south. High temperatures reached near or just above 40 on Saturday and we hit the mid- 40s yesterday, but areas in northern Wisconsin actually broke 50.

Forecast Synopsis
So did you enjoy the last week of dry, seasonable weather? After today, that's all going to come to an end ... well, the dry part anyway. That week-long area of high pressure that gave us all that sunshine last week is going to be replaced by an equally-slow-moving area of low pressure. It's expected to arrive in the Midwest tomorrow, and isn't expected to be jettisoned until Sunday. In other words, you can expect clouds and scattered rain showers starting late on Tuesday and continuing all the way through Saturday. At least I said rain and not snow, so it could be worse! High temperatures should remain seasonably in the 40s through the week.

a possibility that particle pollution concentrations will reach
unhealthy levels for people in sensitive groups across the
southern two thirds of the state. Due to the possibility of

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 4, 2010.

We've had a very nice stretch of weather to begin March with lots of sunshine and high temperatures in the low to mid- 30s Monday and Tuesday and in the mid- to upper 30s yesterday.
Did you know that for the first time in recorded history (since 1950), there were zero tornadoes across the entire United States during the month of February? Well, okay, there was a dinky EF0 in California last week, but other than that, none. Around Wisconsin no February tornadoes are pretty common of course, but the south usually gets at least a few in February, and some of the strongest tornadoes in history have happened in March.

Forecast Synopsis
Remember that high pressure system I told you about Monday morning (or Wednesday if you read me from Facebook ... grrrr Facebook ... )? Well, it's still nearly stationary and covering the entire Midwest and most of the eastern United States. It's not expected to move very far until Saturday, so the next several days should remain sunny with high temperatures near or slightly above normal. We may see a little light rain or a mix Saturday night and into Sunday morning, but I doubt it'll add up to anything significant. Enjoy!

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 1, 2010.

Weather Recap
Today is the first day of Meteorological Spring! It's about three-weeks earlier compared to the normal Astronomical Vernal Equinox mostly for easier record-keeping with the start of a new month. As for the last weekend of February, we had high temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s with some occasional light snow showers, which is pretty seasonable for this time of the year. Green Bay recorded an inch of snowfall yesterday, but most of it melted on impact with the roads.

Forecast Synopsis
Looks like March is going to come in like a lamb. A large area of high pressure currently in Ontario is going to slowly move to the south (not to the east like usual), and this system is going to keep us dry and seasonable through the entire work week. Temperatures should remain near normal (mid- 30s) for most of the week, but we will likely see a small warming trend late in the week. We could have a few light rain or snow showers on Saturday, then a larger system might bring us a snow-melting rain Sunday night and Monday.
