Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 28, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 2:07 PM GMT on January 28, 2010

Good Thursday morning!

Weather Recap
The cold air is here. Highs yesterday were a little below-normal, in the mid- to upper teens in east-central Wisconsin and in the lower 20s south. We did have some sunshine and only a brief moment of flurries yesterday evening, so that was good, but things are going to get even colder over the next two days.
I noticed that my previous weather update blog, written early Monday morning, didn't feed into my Facebook profile until Tuesday morning, making it already one-day late and somewhat irrelevant. Hopefully the same doesn't happen today.
http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php

Forecast Synopsis
Cold high pressure is going to dominate our weather over the next few days. Expect to see sunshine with just a few clouds, but cold temperatures even further below normal. Highs today might not make it out of the single digits!

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 25, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 1:27 PM GMT on January 25, 2010

Good Monday morning!

Weather Recap
I hope you all enjoyed a sneak preview of early Spring with highs temperatures in the upper 30s this weekend! The rain showers that moved through helped to melt some of our snow depth, too, but may have created some icy patches on the roads this morning with temperatures slightly below freezing again.
http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php

Forecast Synopsis
Today is the last day of our early Spring preview. An occluded frontal boundary stretching from a strong area of low pressure centered near northwestern Lake Superior is what was responsible for our warmer air and rain showers over the weekend. Unfortunately, colder air from the northwest tends to follow low pressure systems, and this will be no different. We're expecting some lingering light snow showers today, but by tomorrow we should gradually start to see more sunshine. A lack of low pressure systems moving though should keep the rest of our week dry. Unfortunately, cold air will be arriving and high temperatures will struggle to break out of the teens for the rest of the work week, and on Thursday and Friday, will have a tough time getting out of the single digits! Brrr!

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 21, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 2:14 PM GMT on January 21, 2010

Good Thursday morning!

Weather Recap
Yesterday was a mostly cloudy day, and a few areas of light freezing drizzle were reported late in the day across southern Wisconsin which prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Freezing Rain Advisory yesterday evening. Highs were in the upper 20s in east-central Wisconsin and near 30 in southern Wisconsin.
http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php

Forecast Synopsis
There are two things of interest with the weather forecast over the next week. The first thing to keep an eye on is a developing area of low pressure just off the coast of Oregon. It's expected to strengthen and arrive sometime early this weekend, perhaps Saturday afternoon. It's looking like this area of precip is going to fall mostly as rain, so hopefully driving conditions won't deteriorate Saturday evening. We may see some lingering light rain or snow showers Sunday and Monday, but the heaviest precip should be on Saturday and that is expected to fall as rain at this time. The second thing to be aware of is that behind this low pressure system, colder air is going to start coming down from Canada again, so these high temperatures near or above 30 that we've been enjoying lately looks to be short-lived. Temps may struggle to get out of the teens by next Wednesday.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

NowCast: (Source: National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
A Freezing Rain Advisory remains in effect for Lafayette...Iowa... green and rock counties this morning. Pockets of light freezing rain and patchy freezing drizzle are moving southeast to northwest across southern Wisconsin early this morning. Locations along and north of a Lone Rock to Milwaukee line will be most likely to see the light precipitation between 6 am and 8 am. Motorists are urged to use caution early this morning and be ready for slippery conditions if they encounter any of the light freezing precipitation during the morning commute.

The most concentrated area of precipitation was located across the south Metro...from near Lakeville and St Paul Park...South to near Waseca and Faribault. The precipitation was moving northeast at 25 mph. The band of mixed precipitation was light and should move across the Metro between 630 am and 8 am. Another area of freezing drizzle and flurries was moving across central Minnesota from near Willmar to Glenwood and Little Falls and Cambridge. http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/local/USSC0155

Charlotte, North Carolina:
Conditions: Rain through tomorrow morning.
High Temperatures: Only in the low to mid- 40s. Not quite the 70 degrees you had yesterday.
Areas of moderate to heavy rain will continue to move from north Georgia to across the southern mountains of North Carolina...upstate South Carolina to the Charlotte area through the mid day hours. Rainfall rates of around a quarter of an inch in an hour will be possible with the heaviest rain. The heaviest rain should remain along and south of Interstate 85. Wisconsin Weather Update for January 18, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 2:08 PM GMT on January 18, 2010

Good Monday morning!

Weather Recap
Cloud cover that ended up being a little thicker than was expected this weekend kept our temperatures down a little bit, but they were still slightly above normal. Highs yesterday were in the upper 20s in east-central Wisconsin and near 30 in southern Wisconsin.
http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php

Forecast Synopsis
A weak cold front moving across northern Wisconsin this morning stems from a low pressure system centered near the southern tip of Hudson Bay in east-central Canada. It's not causing any precip though, and is only partially responsible for this deck of clouds that's lingering around. High pressure is expected to build back into the central United States over the next few days, so mostly dry weather and high temperatures remaining a little above normal should remain through our work week.
Our next interesting weather system looks to arrive this weekend. A panhandle-hook-type low pressure system could present Wisconsin with a rain changing to snow event Saturday and Sunday, but with this storm system still almost a week away, let's just keep an eye on it for now and not make any rash decisions, okay?

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 14, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 2:00 PM GMT on January 14, 2010

Good Thursday morning!

Weather Recap
Yesterday wasn't too bad weatherwise for almost the middle of January. We had lots of sunshine, a little breeze in the air, and daytime high temperatures in the mid- 20s in east-central Wisconsin and near 30 in southern Wisconsin. Our normal high is 23 in east-central WI and 24 in southern Wisconsin, and things are looking to stay above normal for a little while.
http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php

Forecast Synopsis
Is anyone here looking forward to a mid- January thaw? Are you sick of temperatures so cold that you don't really want to be outside for more than a few minutes at a time? Do you miss the sight of brown grass and nasty-looking patches of black snow? If you answered "Yes" to those questions, you're in luck as warmer weather is what we have to look forward to over the next few days. The flow of snowy low-pressure system is going to remain well to our north in Canada, and we'll just have one high pressure system after another cruising through here, keeping our sky partly cloudy and temperatures a few degrees above normal. With all of those "partly cloudy" forecasts below, it may look like I just mailed this forecast in, but I did research each day individually. Really, I did! What, you don't trust a weatherman?

NowCast: (Source: National Weather Service)
Fox Cities:
Moisture in the lower levels of the atmosphere was resulting in fog this morning. The visibility across most of the area was between 1 and 3 miles. Visibilities in that range generally do not impede travel. However...patches of much more dense fog are possible in low-lying areas. Always slow down whenever you encounter a fog bank while driving a vehicle. In addition to the fog...a fairly heavy frost occurred overnight. The frost could cause some slippery spots on roadways...so be aware of that possibility when heading out this morning.

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 11, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 1:59 PM GMT on January 11, 2010

Good Monday morning!

Weather Recap
Temperatures remained below normal this weekend with high temperatures in the mid- to upper teens, and after some sunshine on Saturday, we had some light snow showers late in the day yesterday.
http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php

Forecast Synopsis
A weak cold front moved through Wisconsin overnight, and ahead of the cold front we saw some scattered light snow showers push across Wisconsin. However, Wisconsin weather is looking more optimistic for this week. A large area of high pressure is expected to move across the Midwest from south-central Canada, which should clear out these clouds by tonight and keep things sunny tomorrow and Wednesday. The rest of the week is looking sunny as well with a second large high pressure system moving across the United States late in the week. A developing ridge in the upper-air jet stream combined with surface winds gradually shifting to more of a west-southwesterly flow should bring in warmer temperatures for the week as well. Look for a partial thawing of our snow cover by mid-week as high temperatures break the freezing mark!

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 7, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 2:10 PM GMT on January 07, 2010

Good Thursday morning!

Weather Recap
Yesterday was a very typical January day with clouds, flurries, and high temperatures in the lower 20s.
http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php

Forecast Synopsis
Weather models over the last day have increased the amount of moisture associated with a low pressure center now centered in northern Illinois. This means that the little storm that was expected to just spread an inch or two of light, fluffy snow across Wisconsin is now a full-fledged winter storm causing slippery roads and eventually active snowblowers across most of the state. Totals are expected to be heavier the further south and east you live, with 2-5" possible in east-central Wisconsin but over 10" of new snow possible if you happen to live in the Kenosha area.

One of the suggestions for naming winter storms was naming them after Roman gods. So, looking at the list and needing one that begins with the letter "B" (for the second major winter storm of the season), we'll call this one Winter Storm Bacchus. Bacchus is the god of wine, and maybe after clearing your driveway of all this snow tonight, you can relax with one (or more) glasses of your favorite spiked grape beverage.

Important Weather Statement: (Source: National Weather Service)
Fox Cities:
... Winter Weather Advisory now in effect until midnight CST tonight...
* Light to moderate snow will continue into Thursday night.

* A total accumulation of 2 to 5 inches of snow is likely by late
Thursday evening.

* Northeast winds will increase this afternoon and produce some
blowing and drifting of the snow into this evening. This will
lead to hazardous travel conditions.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered
roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while driving.
The latest Wisconsin Road conditions can be obtained by calling
511.

* Snow will continue with deteriorating conditions for the morning
rush hour. Roads will become snow covered and slippery. East
to west oriented roads will be most impacted by the blowing and
drifting snow later today and tonight.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow
are forecast that will make travel dangerous.

Southeastern Wisconsin:
... Winter Storm Warning now in effect until 6 am CST Friday...

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 4, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 1:48 PM GMT on January 04, 2010

Good Monday morning!

Weather Recap
A deep trough in the upper-air jet stream brought cold temperatures to most of the nation this weekend. High temperatures across Wisconsin yesterday were only in the low to mid- teens with a variably cloudy sky.
http://www.weather.gov/climate/index.php

Forecast Synopsis
A large area of high pressure is centered over far northern Minnesota and western Ontario, Canada this morning. This system should gradually clear out the cloud cover tonight, but until then we may still see some flurries floating about. Unfortunately this jet stream trough is not going anywhere anytime soon, so cold, below-normal temperatures look to continue through the week. Ummm... sorry?
