Weather Recap
Yesterday I saw the first light snow shower of the season in the Appleton area. It didn't stick to anything, not even grassy areas, but it did look pretty while attending church yesterday morning. Temperatures were about five degrees above normal yesterday, near 40 degrees.

Forecast Synopsis
After a summer season which saw zero (0) severe weather events in the county I live in, plus after watching last night's season finale of "Storm Chasers" on the Discovery Channel, I'm getting anxious for some sweet storms to forecast. Plus, what's more exciting than chasing a blizzard? Well, if I wanted to chase down a blizzard this week, I would have to drive quite a ways, as our forecast is anything but exciting. A weak Alberta Clipper may produce a few light snow showers across northern Wisconsin on Wednesday, a storm expected to be strong could create some messy weather across the southern United States late on Tuesday and across the east coast on Wednesday. As for us, cloudy and breezy conditions look to persist through the week, and a plunge in the upper-air jet stream could make the second half of the week colder than the first half. Other than that, well, meh.

Wisconsin Weather Update for November 23, 2009.

Yesterday was an outstanding day of late-November weather with more clouds than sunshine but high temperatures in the upper 50s! That's well above our normal high temperature of 38 (Green Bay) and 39 (Madison).

Forecast Synopsis
Last week I teased a strong weather system that could create some havoc across the United States this week. And this may still be true, although it has been delayed about 36-hours and will probably be more rain than snow. The nice, warm ridge in the upper-air jet stream that has given us this stretch of very mild November weather is going to change over to a trough, meaning colder air will begin to funnel back into our area this week. A panhandle-hook-type low pressure system is developing near, well, the panhandle of Oklahoma. It's going to absorb some Gulf of Mexico moisture, then the jet stream is going to shoot it northeastward toward our area, so look for clouds, wind and rain starting tomorrow night and lasting through Thanksgiving Day. The rain could change over to light snow Wednesday night and Thursday, but besides a few splotches on grassy areas, I'm thinking it'll be more for show than for purpose this time around.

Fog will affect much of northeast... central and east central
Wisconsin this morning. Although several observation sites were
reporting visibilities between 1 and 3 miles... pockets of dense
fog were observed from Wautoma northward to Waupaca... Stevens
Point... Mosinee... Clintonville... Shawano... Antigo and Iron
Mountain. The fog had reduced visibilities to 1/4 mile or less
in these areas and other neighboring communities... resulting in
locally hazardous travel conditions for the morning commute to
work or school. The foggy conditions are expected to improve by
around 9 am.

Anyone traveling this morning should be prepared for low
visibilities in fog. If you encounter dense fog while driving...

The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan has issued a dense fog advisory... which is in effect until 10 am CST this morning.

Areas of dense fog will expand through sunrise over Dane... green... and
rock counties. Visibilities will drop to one quarter mile or much
less. The fog will begin to lift by mid morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be
reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving... slow down...
use your headlights... and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.

Wisconsin Weather Update for November 19, 2009.

After a rather nice start to the week, things got a little worse yesterday as clouds and scattered rain showers entered the state. High temperatures have been between 46-51 Monday-Wednesday. Did you know that yesterday's rain was the first measurable precipitation all month in east-central and southern Wisconsin?

Forecast Synopsis
Cold rain showers look to continue today thanks to a cut-off upper-air low pressure circulation. These cut-off lows in the jet stream tend to be rather slow to leave, so expect scattered rain showers through much of the day today. It will eventually move off to our east by tonight, then we should remain dry through most of Sunday.
On Monday I teased a possible rain/snow storm for the first half of next week, and it still looks to be rather messy. A couple of weather systems are expected to move through the upper-Midwest from Canada, bringing colder temperatures and wet weather with it. Temperatures will probably be warm enough for the wet to fall as rain on Monday, but 850-millibar expected temperatures Monday night through Wednesday look to be cold enough where much of the precip could fall as light snow. The National Weather Service: Green Bay is not eating the Kool-Aid snow cone quite yet as their latest forecast for next week is still calling for nothing but rain. The NWS: Milwaukee/Sullivan office has got their Kool-Aid at the ready as they are now mentioning a rain/snow mix for next Tuesday. Could be an interesting weather blog this Monday!

Southern Wisconsin:
Cloudy and foggy conditions will continue through the early morning. The fog will reduce the visibility to mostly 1 to 3 miles...however patches of dense fog will drop visibilities to one quarter mile or less. Patchy drizzle is also expected early this morning. Temperatures will remain in the upper 30s to middle 40s. Early morning motorists should use extra caution this morning due to the patchy nature of the dense fog.

Wisconsin Weather Update for November 16, 2009.

Is it just me or has November felt warmer than October? We had another pleasant late-fall weekend with clouds and a sprinkle on Saturday but lots of sunshine yesterday. High temperatures were in the mid- 50s Saturday and the upper 40s yesterday.

Forecast Synopsis
It's the middle of November, the grass has been mowed for the last time this season, the leaves are raked, Christmas lights are hung and waiting to be turned on, and we're ready for our first major snowstorm of the season. Right? Well, if you're not quite prepared for snow yet, you've got at least another week to make sure your snow shovels are located and/or your snowblower still works. Pleasant November weather looks to continue through much of the day tomorrow. A cut-off circulation in the upper-air jet stream could mean clouds and scattered light rain showers Tuesday night through Thursday, but otherwise this week looks to maintain the status quo with temperatures slightly above normal. There may be an interesting storm lining up for next Monday; I'll have an update on that potential storm this Thursday morning.

Rainfall amounts will be from 1/4 to 3/4 inch.

Wisconsin Weather Update for November 12, 2009.

Our week of "Indian Summer" continues with temperatures about 10-15 degrees above normal (mid- 40s)! Temperatures were near 60 Monday and Tuesday and dropped to the lower 50s yesterday.

Forecast Synopsis
The upper-air jet stream ridge which has welcomed Wisconsin with mild November temperatures continues to influence our weather even a week later! Eventually this ridge will change to a colder upper-air trough which will bring air into the Midwest from Canada, but this is going to take a few days to develop so we can expect to stay above-normal through the weekend and even into the first part of next week. Some places might hit 60 degrees again tomorrow, but otherwise you can expect temps near 50 this weekend, then eventually getting back to the 40s by the middle of next week.
There's not much rain to talk about. A weak area of low pressure may give us some rain showers tomorrow night, but otherwise expect more sunshine this weekend before clouds return next Tuesday.

Wisconsin Weather Update for November 9, 2009.

Weather Recap
Hopefully I don't have to tell you how nice this weekend's weather was, as you should have been outdoors enjoying our Indian Summer weekend. The weekend high temperatures Saturday and Sunday were 68 and 67 (respectively) in Green Bay and 71 each day in Madison. The Saturday Green Bay high of 68 tied a record high temperature for that date, but otherwise we just missed setting new record highs.

Forecast Synopsis
Indian Summer continues! Warm air is continuing to flow northward ahead of a surface cold front moving through Wisconsin this morning. There's no precipitation in Wisconsin from the front, but it does have clouds surrounding it and cooler air moving in behind the cold front. So it doesn't look like we're going to get near 70 again today, but the cooler air won't get here immediately so I would still expect the mercury to climb into the lower 60s today, before eventually swinging back to the 50s and eventually the 40s by this weekend.

did you know that winter storms result in more total damage in the
state than any other form of severe weather? Damage to vehicles and
other structures is common.

... Winter deaths and injuries...
did you know that winter storms and cold temperatures kill and injure
more people across Wisconsin than other weather hazards such as
tornadoes... flash floods... damaging thunderstorm winds..or
lightning? Most of these deaths and injuries are vehicle-related and
considered indirectly-related to winter weather.

Winter weather hazards in Wisconsin result in thousands of motor
vehicle accidents each year. Sadly... many of these accidents can be
avoided if travelers would use common sense... stay alert... slow
down... and put their headlights on.

-On average... about 17,000 vehicle accidents occur each winter
season in Wisconsin when Road surfaces are snow... ice... or
slush covered... resulting in about 75 deaths and 7000
injuries.

-Typically... the greatest number of weather-related vehicle
accidents occurs during the first and second seasonal snow
events... even if only or one-half inch falls. It takes a
couple snow/ice events for drivers to adjust to recommended
slower travel speeds.

-Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Faulty furnaces and space
heaters can release Carbon monoxide gases that can kill people
in confined rooms. Usually 10 to 15 people die each year in
Wisconsin due to Carbon monoxide poisoning.

Yesterday was a mostly cloudy and cool day with patchy drizzle and high temperatures in the lower 40s central and upper 40s in southern Wisconsin.

Forecast Synopsis
Yesterday may not have been that wonderful of a day around Wisconsin, but we're going to see some improvement pretty quickly around here. A nice upper-air jet stream ridge is beginning to develop across the central United States, and this is going to help bring in warm southerly winds over the next few days. Our normal high temperature is just below 50, but we could see temperatures 10-15 degrees above normal this weekend, and there won't even be any rain to keep you indoors. It'll be breezy, but tolerable, and that's needed this time of the year to get the warm air in here to begin with. We may see a rain shower Sunday night, but otherwise, look for dry conditions with lots of sunshine to continue through the weekend and into next week. Enjoy!

Yesterday was a pretty nice day outside, Packers game notwithstanding, with a variety of clouds and sunshine and high temperatures in the upper 40s central and lower 50s south.

Forecast Synopsis
We have a rather seasonable week of weather ahead of us. There's only one storm system we're going to have to deal with, and it's a quick-moving Alberta Clipper which will give us a brief shot at some light rain or snow showers tomorrow night. Otherwise, things stay cool for a few days thanks to an upper-air jet stream trough moving through the north-central United States. However, this trough becomes a nice warm ridge late in the week, so temperatures mostly in the 40s during the work week could become 50s by Friday and next weekend.
