Forecast Synopsis
The rain is coming! A large area of showers and thunderstorms are moving through the eastern Dakotas, southern Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and many more midwestern states, courtesy of a frontal boundary stretching between two areas of surface low pressure in southern Manitoba, Canada, and central Texas. The moisture associated with this front is slowly moving north-northeast so it still may take a few hours before it starts entering Wisconsin, but when it does, you can expect lots of rain and windy conditions. But before all this wackiness happens, enjoy your warm southerly breeze which should kick temperatures up to near 60 today before falling back into the 40s by this weekend.

Today: Cloudy with areas of dense fog this morning. Increasing winds during the day. Showers with isolated thunderstorms may start to develop in southern and western Wisconsin before sunset. Warmer with a high of 60. Chance of rain this afternoon south and west 30%.

Yesterday actually wasn't too bad of a day around here. It felt like a comfortable fall day with a mix of sunshine and clouds, little to no rain, and temperatures in the lower 50s central and near 60 south.

Forecast Synopsis
Scattered showers are accompanying a cold front stretching from east-central Wisconsin through central Missouri, eastern Oklahoma and central Texas. We're going to see some rain moving through southern Wisconsin within the next couple of hours, with the scattered showers hitting east-central Wisconsin before lunchtime. It's not going to last that long though, so expect the rain to end early this afternoon south and before the sun sets in central Wisconsin. After that, we have a few nice Autumn days ahead of us with temperatures perhaps warming up into the 60s again by Thursday. Things change on Friday and Saturday though, when a new, nasty system is currently projected to move through the Midwest, dumping lots more rain, blowing plenty of wind, and leaving us with nothing but colder air behind it. So in other words, enjoy Tuesday through Thursday.

Southern Wisconsin:
Look for light to moderate rain to exit eastern Fond Du Lac and Sheboygan counties between 530 and 6 am. A second area of rain will reach western Lafayette and southwest Iowa counties between 6 am and 630 am...and spread northeast across all of southern Wisconsin by 10 am. In between...expect areas of fog...patchy drizzle and scattered light rain showers. The fog could reduce visibilities to under a mile at times during the early morning commute.

Weather Recap
Well yesterday was a pretty different day depending on where you lived in Wisconsin. Some of my Facebook friends in southern Wisconsin were complimenting on how nice yesterday was with a mix of clouds and sunshine and high temperatures near 70 degrees. Here in the Fox Valley, the clouds remained pretty much all day and our high temperature was only 48. Rhinelander only hit 43 degrees, where it rained all day long.

Forecast Synopsis
A frontal boundary stretching between two different areas of low pressure to our east and south-southwest are continuing to develop a large swath of rain across the Midwest. The rain has already cleared in northern and west-central Wisconsin and is slowly working its way east-northeast. So while the Fox Valley may get a break in the rain within the next few hours, southern Wisconsin may not be so lucky. More rain is expected for everyone tonight and tomorrow as the low pressure system to our south strengthens and may not end until Friday night or Saturday morning. Our weekend is looking cool and dry, but you can't spell "cool and dry" without "dry"!

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 19, 2009.

National Weather Service Tour
Before I get to the forecast, I'd like to share a unique experience I got to have this weekend. On Saturday, I was invited by Jeff Last, a NWS Warning Coordination Meteorologist, to get a tour of the National Weather Service in Green Bay. About 20 weather geeks and I got to climb the 90-foot open staircase to enter the WSR-88D Doppler radar dome (I'm now one of about 50 people to have ever been in there), got to go inside the office and see how they research and write up forecasts nowadays (very different from when I was a NWS intern back in 1997), they showed us how they issue severe weather warnings, let us check out their server rooms, and we got to watch them prepare and launch a weather balloon radiosonde (no six-year-old boys were attached). Weather Recap
We had a dry but cool weekend with a mix of sunshine and clouds and high temperatures around the 50-55 degree mark. Our average high temperatures are in the mid- to upper 50s this time of the year, so we were still just a few degrees below normal.

High pressure off to our southeast is still attempting to influence our weather today, and it looks like it's going to work. A low pressure system to our north is presenting a few clouds to us this morning, but it looks like any rain showers are going to stay to our north today. However, a series of strong low pressure systems are going to march across the United States this week, so starting late tomorrow and continuing through the rest of the work week, we may see a return of colder, wet weather once again. So enjoy the next 36 hours of weather, as things are going to take a turn for the worse again soon.

It has been another average week of weather for your middle of November with high temperatures in the 40s, scattered rain mixing with snow showers this past Monday, some sunshine on Tuesday, and more scattered rain showers yesterday. Parts of northern Wisconsin received up to 3" of snow last Monday. I can't believe Thanksgiving is only a week away, it feels like it was just three weeks ago when it was sunny and in the 70s every day. Oh wait ...

Forecast Synopsis
Thanks to an upper-level disturbance in the area, you can expect another gloomy day of clouds and rain with temperatures in the lower 40s and not moving much today. However, the late-weekend warmup I teased in last Monday's update is still in the forecast, which is good news for everyone wanting a temporary end to these high temperatures in the 40s. It may actually be slightly above normal Sunday and next week, but unfortunately the average high temperature will have dropped to the upper 50s by then, so you can just go ahead and keep the shorts in your dresser drawer.

Patchy light rain over south central and southeast Wisconsin will yield to an increasing area of steady light rain this morning between 7 am and 9 am. By 9 or 10 am this morning...light rain and drizzle will be falling across most of the area. Morning rainfall will be on the light side...mostly between one tenth and one quarter inch. The rain may be mixed with a little snow in the Baraboo and Westfield areas. Temperatures will remain in the middle 30s to lower 40s this morning.

... A very cold start to the month of October...
The first 13 days for the month of October across central and northeast
Wisconsin have averaged 7 to 10 degrees below normal...as mainly cloudy
and wet periods of weather have prevailed. In fact...there has not been
one day of a high temperature of 60 degrees across the area. All
observing sites across the region are reporting at least a top 5 coldest

Weather Recap
Cold air coming in from Canada kept us chilly over the weekend with high temperatures only in the lower 40s, and many of us saw our first snowflakes of the season on Saturday.

Forecast Synopsis
If you missed your chance at seeing flurries on Saturday, you're going to get another shot at it today. High pressure centered over New York is trying to keep the Midwest dry today, but it's going to get pushed aside by moisture from a small disturbance to our west. It's not even the middle of October yet so it should be rain, but the upper-air jet stream flow remains further south than what we'd like to see, so the scattered showers will fall more as light snow than light rain, especially in the morning and evening. Areas to our north and west may see 1-2" of snow today, but we'll probably just get a dusting on grassy areas. There are more chances for light rain or snow this week, but if you're looking for that Indian Summer warmup, keep your eye on Sunday and next week.

After some rather cloudy and rainy weather Monday and Tuesday, we finally saw the sun yesterday, and quite a lot of it actually. Temperatures have remained below normal with highs in the mid- to upper 50s.

Forecast Synopsis
So remember how on Monday I mentioned that there was only going to be one significant storm system moving through Wisconsin this week? Well, that's still kinda sorta mostly true. A strong area of low pressure is centered to our north this morning, over central Ontario, Canada. A cold front stretching southward from this low is moving across Wisconsin this morning, and is going to usher in the coolest air of the season thus far over the next few days. But along with the cold front, scattered rain showers are developing in coordination with another area of low pressure to our southwest. We may see a few rain showers today, but the heaviest precipitation should remain to our north and south. Another weak disturbance looks to move through later in the day on Saturday, and there's a chance that could bring us our first snow flakes of the season! I wouldn't lie about that ... or would I?

Look for isolated light rain showers or sprinkles to move west to east over southern Wisconsin between 7 am and 10 am...ahead of a broader band of light rain. This larger band of intermittent light rain will move into western Iowa and Lafayette counties around 8 am...and reach a dells...Madison to Lake Geneva line between 930 am and 10 am. The light rain band will cross the remainder of south central and southeast Wisconsin between 10 am and 1130 am. Look for clouds to thicken and lower ahead of the rain...with temperatures slowly rising into the lower 50s by 11 am this morning.

Our weekend weather felt a lot like late October rather than early October with a mostly cloudy sky, a few scattered rain showers, and temperatures about 5-10 degrees below normal.

Forecast Synopsis
It looks like we'll have one major weather system to deal with this week. A large area of surface low pressure is developing this morning in the central Rocky Mountains. This system is expected to move east-northeastward over the next couple of days, and could make things really wet and windy again around our neighborhoods late tonight and continuing through much of tomorrow. Another strong system will work its way across the Midwest Thursday and Friday, but as of now it looks like most of the rain will remain to our south. Temperatures look to stay near or below normal this week again as well.

Weather Recap
After a lousy day of weather on Monday with cold wind and rain, things improved a bit on Tuesday before yesterday's sunny and calm day. We never really recovered much temperaturewise with highs mostly in the 50s so far this week. Much of Wisconsin has seen some morning frost as well, and areas in north-central Wisconsin have had lows in the 20s where the growing season has already ended.

Forecast Synopsis
Hopefully you enjoyed the sunny and cool Autumn weather we had yesterday, as more wild weather is on the way. A slow-moving, large swath of rain has developed ahead of a low pressure system in Kansas. An occluded front stretches northward from the low through the Dakotas to another weaker area of low pressure. The main low's warm front is stretching southward across eastern Texas, and its cold front stretches across western Texas and New Mexico. This low pressure system is expected to move northeastward from Kansas to Wisconsin by Friday night. What does all of this mumbo-jumbo mean? There were a total of 27 days in September with low temperatures of
70 degrees or warmer. This broke the previous record of 26 days set
September 2008.

Thirty year climate normals Show Low temperatures falling into the
60s by the 15th of the month.

... A very warm September comes to an end across the area...

Despite a cool end to the month of September... this past month will
still go down as one of the warmest septembers ever on record across
the area as Summer just did not want to seem to quit. High pressure
aloft centered near the region much of the month set up a pattern
that favored keeping warmer than normal conditions around.

- Las Vegas -

In Las Vegas the average temperature at McCarran International
Airport was 86.2 degrees for September 2009 making this the warmest
September ever on record since records started in 1937.

The 5 warmest septembers ever recorded in Las Vegas are:

1. 86.2 degrees/2009 ***
2. 85.3 degrees/1979
3. 85.1 degrees/2001
4. 84.8 degrees/2008
5. 84.4 degrees/2003

The average temperature of 86.2 degrees this past September is 4.9
degrees above normal. Most of the impressive warmth this past month
was due to the very warm low temperatures. 27 days had a low
temperature of 70 degrees or better this past month which sets a new
record for the most 70 degree or better low temperatures for the
month of September... the previous record was 26 days set just last
year. The average low temperature of 75.1 degrees breaks the
previous record of 73.0 degrees set in 2008. The normal average low
temperature for Las Vegas for September is 67.6 degrees.

High temperatures however were also above normal for September.
There were 12 days of 100 degrees or better which is 5 above the
normal number of such days for the month. The average high
temperature this past September was 97.3 degrees which is 3.5
degrees above normal.

Only a trace of precipitation fell at McCarran for the month with a
few sprinkles recorded on the 4th. Normally McCarran receives 0.31
inches of rain for the month. The last time there was this little
rain at the official Las Vegas climate station during September was
back in 2005. Rainfall this month varied greatly across the valley
however. Thunderstorms on the 4th brought some locally heavy rain to
the southwest part of the valley mainly from the southern half of
Summerlin southward towards areas near sunset and 215. On average a
third of an inch of rain fell in this area with localized amounts up
to 1.42 inches recorded. This was the heaviest rain to fall all
Summer in this part of the valley. Elsewhere outside of a locally
heavy thunderstorm that dropped around a half inch of rain in the
southern part of anthem on the 2nd amounts were light across the
valley. Trace amounts were recorded for the month at the National
Weather Service office and the North Las Vegas Airport. The driest
area was the far northern half of the valley where no rain fell at
all for the month.
