Weather Synopsis
Yesterday you could sense a change in the weather was coming, with the winds picking up and the clouds slowly on the increase. And here we are a day later with heat and humidity just a memory and early-October-like weather at our doorsteps. A strong but occluded low pressure system off to our northeast is bringing cooler Canadian air into the western Great Lakes region, due to the counter-clockwise horizontal rotation of air around the low. This cool air is going to linger through much of this week, with highs mostly in the 60s expected, and we may see some scattered showers mixed in thanks to the mostly cloudy sky. They don't look strong enough to have much thunder associated with them, but the 70s return by Thursday so enjoy the temporary break from summer.

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today: Mostly cloudy, breezy and cool. A light scattered shower may pop up, but shouldn't be a big deal. High of 69 central, lower 70s south. Chance of rain just 25%.

Upcoming weather in Davenport, Florida: Numerous storms, highs upper 80s. I'll take just one of your storms this summer, we've yet to get one up here in Appleton!

Showers and thunderstorms were scattered over a broad area from Levy and Citrus counties...and extended through Sumter County to Bushnell and the Green Swamp. Other showers and thunderstorms were from Brandon and Ruskin and extended south to Bradenton...Arcadia... Venice and into Highlands County. Expect brief heavy rain and a few lightning strikes at any time. The showers and storms were moving east and southeast at 15 mph. Numerous showers over the Gulf will continue to move onshore from Tampa Bay to Boca Grande.

Wisconsin Weather Update for June 25, 2009.

Weather Synopsis
We're halfway to Christmas and it certainly has felt that way outside with hot and humid high temperatures in the 90s this week. You may or may not want to hear this, but there is a cool-down in the forecast, but the cooler air won't make it to Wisconsin until late this weekend and early next week. We do have a frontal boundary moving slowly southward across Wisconsin this morning, which will give some of us a stray shower this morning or early this afternoon. After that, look for cooler and less humid air to begin filling up our state, but by "cooler" I mean high temperatures in the 80s, not 70s. The 70s arrive on Sunday.

A cluster of showers will continue to affect portions of coastal southeast South Carolina and coastal southeast Georgia this morning. ... Record daily warm minimum temperature set at Milwaukee WI...
the low temperature in Milwaukee on Wednesday June 24th was 77
degrees. This set a record for the warmest minimum temperature for
the date.
The previous record was 74 degrees set in 2005.

...Milwaukee finally hits 90 degrees...
[Yesterday] Milwaukee hit 94 degrees. This is the first time
Milwaukee has been in the 90s since September 5 2007 when the high
was 91. During the Summer of 2008...Milwaukee did not hit 90.

...New record high temperatures set in Green Bay...
At Austin straubel Airport in Green Bay...the temperature climbed to
95 degrees early [Tuesday] evening. This is a new record high temperature
for this date.
The previous record was 94 degrees...last set in 1934.

...How hot it can get inside a closed vehicle...
Don't leave children...elderly...or pets in a car while you run an
errand...even if it is only expected to take a few minutes.
Temperatures can reach dangerous levels in the matter of minutes.

An unscientific study was conducted by the National Weather
Service forecast office near Sullivan last Summer. The object was
to determine how quickly an automobile would heat up to levels
that would pose a health hazard to children and pets left in a
vehicle with the air conditioner turned off.

It was a sunny day and the car was parked with the sun to the
rear. The automobile was dark blue...so it probably absorbed heat
quicker and more efficiently than a light colored vehicle.
However...the Experiment was also conducted largely during the mid
afternoon...after peak heating from the sun.

The simplified Experiment consisted of putting an electronic
thermometer inside a closed vehicle...and one outside of the
vehicle to measure the ambient temperature in the shade. The
interior and exterior readings were compared at timed increments.

The interior of the car was cooled to 83 degrees by the vehicle air
conditioner...the engine was turned off and the monitoring started.
After only fifteen minutes...the automobile interior heated to a
deadly 120 degrees.

When hot temperatures occur...it is important not to leave children
or pets in parked cars...even for short periods of time under any
circumstances. A Young child was killed inside a car early this
Spring due to excessive heat inside a Van when the outside air
temperature was only in the mid 50s!

Wisconsin Weather Update for June 22, 2009.

Weather Synopsis
The Summer Solstice occurred this weekend, and almost like turning on a light switch, the heat finally arrived. Southern Wisconsin had some crazy weather Thursday night and Friday with several inches of rain flooding many areas (including Miller Park!) but things remained calm here in east-central Wisconsin, which is still looking for its first interesting thunderstorm of the year.
As for today, a low pressure system centered in southern Minnesota has a warm front stretching southeast of the system. This means we can expect a few scattered storms today (nothing severe expected) followed by the hottest temperatures of the season thus far tomorrow.

Wisconsin Weather Update for June 18, 2009.

Weather Synopsis
Today and tomorrow could really be interesting around southern and central Wisconsin with the widest spread of severe weather so far this season a good possibility. This is the first time all year where central Wisconsin is under the slight risk category for severe weather, and parts of southern Wisconsin are under the dangerous moderate risk of severe weather. Statistics from the Storm Prediction Center include a 10% chance of an EF2-EF5 tornado happening within 25 miles of your house if you live in southwestern or south-central Wisconsin, and a 5% chance of any type of tornado happening 25 miles from your house in east-central and southeastern Wisconsin. Damaging wind and hail is also a good possibility, with much of southern Wisconsin under the 45% chance category and east-central/southeastern WI about a 15-30% chance. Links to these graphics are below.

What's happening here is we have a warm front just to our south, stretching across central Illinois and southern Iowa. This is connecting to a low pressure system in Nebraska, with a cold front stretching southwest from this low. Increased air moisture and temperatures in the 70s will combine with the vertical lifting of this warm, moist air by the fronts. While the most unstable air will likely remain across Iowa and southwestern Wisconsin today, and across Illinois tomorrow, enough unstable air may slide into southern Wisconsin where a few storm watches or warnings may have to be issued. East-central Wisconsin's under a lower risk for severe weather, but would not be surprised if a few nasty storms sprouted up there too. Severe Thunderstorm Watch boxes are already in play early this morning across northwestern Iowa and also central Illinois.

Fox Cities:
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected across central...north-central...east-central...and northeast Wisconsin through mid-morning. Through 900 am...the showers will be most numerous over central Wisconsin...in the Marshfield...Wisconsin Rapids...Stevens Point...and Wautoma areas. Another small cluster of showers will affect far northeast Wisconsin...near Iron Mountain Michigan. In addition...atmospheric conditions are such that additional showers could develop anywhere across the area this morning. Patchy fog had developed near Lake Michigan. Visibilities below 1/2 mile were occurring over the northern tip of the Door Peninsula...and fog is expected to affect other areas near the lake from time to time this morning. Motorists near the lake should be alert for the possibility of fog banks...and slow down in areas with reduced visibilities.

Southern Wisconsin:
Sprinkles and a few light showers are moving through southern Wisconsin this morning. The rain currently is east of a Lone Rock to Blanchardville line...extending eastward toward the Milwaukee area. Drier air is quickly moving into southern Wisconsin and dissipating the light rain. Little to no rainfall accumulation is expected in southern Wisconsin this morning. Additional thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening with the potential for some severe thunderstorms.

Wisconsin Weather Update for June 15, 2009.

Good Monday morning!

Weather Synopsis
We had a pretty great weekend of weather with warm temperatures and quite a bit of sunshine, mixed with a few clouds and isolated thundershowers. High pressure centered just to our east will give us another great day of weather today, but then things start getting a bit more unstable around here. Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and continuing through the rest of the work week. Right now the best chance of severe weather in Wisconsin looks to be Thursday and Friday, but with an unstable weather pattern emerging, it's best to stay up to date with the latest forecasts in case things get crazy earlier than expected. It's the middle of June and Wisconsin has only had two recorded tornadoes thus far, which is way below average.

Weather Synopsis
Southern Wisconsin had some severe thunderstorms move through Monday evening, including a tornado in Racine County which was later declassified as a "gustnado." Northeastern and east-central Wisconsin is still going through a severe weather drought this year, but at least we're getting enough rain to prevent drought conditions from returning. As for the upcoming week, it looks like more pleasant springtime weather is on the way with highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s and another chance of rain on Saturday. Unfortunately, most of you are not really wanting springtime weather anymore, but the real summer heat is still at least another week away. I think the National Weather Service - Milwaukee/Sullivan's Twitter feed put it best this morning, "Putzy forecast. Not much excitement. Still waiting for a pattern shift towards summer-like warmth and humidity."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The wind, a favorite power source of the green energy movement, seems to be dying down across the United States. And the cause, ironically, may be global warming — the very problem wind power seeks to address.
The idea that winds may be slowing is still a speculative one, and scientists disagree whether that is happening. But a first-of-its-kind study suggests that average and peak wind speeds have been noticeably slowing since 1973, especially in the Midwest and the East.

...June 11 2009 is Wisconsin's heat awareness day...
Governor jim Doyle has declared June 11 2009 as Wisconsin/S heat
awareness day to alert the public of The Hazards associated with
extended period of extreme heat and humidity...and the precautions
needed to protect oneself when this condition exists.

NOAA/S National Weather Service /NWS/...in conjunction with the
Wisconsin department of health and family services...and the
Wisconsin emergency management team...are co-sponsoring heat
awareness day.

Since 1982...heat waves have been responsible for more deaths in
Wisconsin than all other natural disasters combined. The hot Summer
of 1995 claimed 154 Wisconsin residents and forced another 400
people to seek medical treatment.

In 1999...at least 20 people died in Wisconsin from the effects of
heat. For 2001 the total was 15..followed by 8 in 2002 and 5 in 2003.
These numbers represent the totals of directly and indirectly related
deaths.

Medical records indicate that the elderly and youngsters face the
highest risk of heat-related deaths. Also...certain medications
restrict the body/S ability to sweat. Therefore...people on
medications should consult their doctor for advice.

Detailed information on how to protect yourself from extreme heat
will be distributed by the NWS on June 11 2009 to the NOAA weather
wire and the NOAA weather radios that have coverage in Wisconsin.

Experience has shown that being aware of the dangers of extreme
heat...and knowing what precautions to take...reduces the risk of
heat-related exhaustion or death.

Wisconsin Weather Update for June 8, 2009.

Weather Synopsis
Well guys, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it was just announced that Summer has been officially cancelled due to the economy. We will be going straight from Spring into a short Autumn, then right back into Winter. Mother Nature apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

Rain with occasional thunderstorms will continue through much of the day today as a frontal boundary moves across northern Illinois. There will probably be a few breaks in the rain from time to time, but expect more umbrella time than not today. One of the weather models is indicating we may actually see some breaks of sunshine this afternoon. If that happens, expect some brief warm and humid air to move in, which could catapult our temperatures from the 50s to the 60s (and also increase our evening severe weather chances). But if you don't see any sunshine, expect these autumn-like temperatures in the 50s to remain. As for the rest of the week, I don't think we're going to hit our average high temperature (75 central, 77 south) but later in the week we may at least get close to it.

Weather Synopsis
So how are you liking summer so far? It's not exactly hot and stormy, but lucky for us the astronomical (non-meteorological) start of summer isn't for another 2+ weeks yet. Instead of highs in the 80s and severe thunderstorms, we're talking about patchy frost overnight and highs in the 60s, which isn't exactly beach or outdoor waterpark weather. But Steve. you may ask, it is going to get hot any day now, right? My answer is yes, tomorrow it will, well kind of, anyway, but just for one day before cooler weather arrives again just in time for the weekend.

Southern Wisconsin:
Scattered frost was observed at the Sullivan forecast office at 5 am. Lows dipped to 37 at the weather office. Lows also dipped to the mid 30s at Sheboygan and West Bend. Scattered frost likely occurred across portions of southeast and south central Wisconsin mainly north of a line from just east of The Dells to the National Weather Service office at Sullivan...to just north of Milwaukee. Other patchy frost may have occurred just to the south of this area in low areas. The frost will quickly disappear as temperatures rise with the morning sunshine.

Weather Synopsis
Something rather unusual just happened at midnight last night. Northeast and east-central Wisconsin just finished an entire month without having a single severe weather event! Granted, it's not THAT unusual, since it did last happen six and 12 years ago, and southeastern Wisconsin did have a couple severe weather events in May, but if you're thinking it has been a pretty quiet month, you're right. The first week of June isn't really going to change this pattern much either, with temperatures just a bit below normal and maybe a round of rain showers tomorrow. Does it feel like the Meteorological start of summer today to you?
