Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 31, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:29 PM GMT on October 31, 2008

Good Halloween morning!

Weather Synopsis
There's nothing spooky about this forecast! High pressure to our southeast is going to continue our streak of sunny days, and while a cold front is moving across northwestern Wisconsin this morning, almost the clouds and all of the precipitation are going to stay well into Canada, closer to its parent low pressure system. Ahead of the cold front, mild, southerly winds are going to continue around our area, bringing Wisconsin extremely friendly, boo-tiful Halloween weather. I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist that one.

Today’s Forecast Grade: A

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today: Mostly sunny and very mild! High of 65 central, upper 60s south, which is only a few degrees away from our record high for this date. Perfect trick-or-treating weather for our little Elmo!

Tonight: Mostly clear, lows upper 30s.

This Weekend:
Saturday: Mostly sunny and cooler, but still nice for the first day of November, highs mid- to upper 50s. I'd remind you to set your clocks back one hour Sunday morning, but every other news source is going to do the same, so I'm going to pass on this one.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy and breezy; a few scattered rain showers possible but not overly likely. Highs mid- to upper 50s. Chance of rain 30%.

Next Week:
Monday: Partly cloudy, breezy and mild again, highs 63-68. Now if it would only stay this way through April...
Tuesday: Mostly cloudy and breezy, maybe a sprinkle, highs 60-65. Chance of measurable rain only 20%.
Wednesday: Cloudy and windy with rain developing late. Highs 59-64. Chance of rain 40%. Thursday and Friday actually look pretty nasty at this point with rain and wind, and maybe some flurries on the backend, but let's wait and see if this actually turns out.

By: HaleStorm, 11:36 AM GMT on October 29, 2008

Good Wednesday morning!

Weather Synopsis
Well this is a slam-dunk forecast! That nasty low pressure system that gave many of us our first taste of snow Sunday and Monday is north of New England now, and high pressure is starting to dominate much of the United States's weather. If you want to get a sense of that, just check out all of the other city forecasts below, where every city is either sunny or partly cloudy over the next couple of days! Sunshine will be the rule here as well, and a wind shift ahead of a storm system passing to our north will bring us warmer temperatures Thursday and Friday.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 27, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:26 PM GMT on October 27, 2008

Good Monday morning!

Weather Synopsis
So a few days ago, you first started hearing the word "snow" in your local forecast. But it's one thing hearing it, and quite another when you look outside yesterday afternoon and see large flakes of sleet raining down. Yes, old man winter is closer to us than you thought, and that's yet another reason why outdoor water parks in the Wisconsin Dells don't stay open through Halloween. As for today, most of the significant wind and precipitation has moved to our east, but clouds, somewhat breezy conditions, and a few isolated light rain showers, snow showers, sprinkles, flurries, or perhaps all of the above, may still linger in our state today. After today, while breezy conditions look to be persistent through much of the rest of the upcoming week, temperatures will rise through Thursday before dropping back into the 40s this weekend, and little if any precipitation is expected.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 23, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:34 PM GMT on October 23, 2008

Good Thursday morning!

Where was yesterday's Weather Update?
Okay, so as you may have noticed, there wasn't a Weather Update yesterday. Why? Well, remember a few months ago when both of my desktop PC's hard drives crashed on the same day, causing all of my blogs to be delayed about two weeks? One of the remaining issues once I got one of my two hard drives recovered was that Windows XP refused to install any Windows Update patches. So I go to turn on my PC yesterday morning, and XP decides to sit on the "welcome" login screen for over an hour! It might have been well over an hour too - I had to leave for work before it finished booting up. But when I got home yesterday evening, not only had my PC finished booting up, but all of my Windows Update patches had been processed, so I presume that's what it was doing for all that time. Why it choose to finally install them now, and during the bootup process instead of on shutdown, I'm not sure, but now my PC is fully patched, which makes me feel a little bit better. So while there was no update yesterday morning, I'm going to combine Wednesday's and tomorrow's update into one big Weather Update this morning. The normal schedule should resume on Monday.

Weather Synopsis
So last week Friday, I mentioned this big weather system that looked to threaten parts of the central and eastern United States today. And sure enough, looking at the surface analysis (link is below) the weather models had this right. A big fat low pressure system is over eastern Nebraska and Kansas this morning, developing a line of (mostly rain) showers from southwestern Minnesota through Iowa, Missouri, and into eastern Arkansas. Even more interesting is that behind this low pressure system, it's cold enough to snow, which it's doing right now in western Nebraska and northeastern Colorado. But while the sunshine many of us are enjoying this morning may be short-lived, as the weather models predicted three days ago, most of the moisture and heavy precipitation from this storm system will remain to our south. Note that I said most, not all. =) Behind this low pressure system, an upper-air jet stream trough is going to move into the western Great Lakes, bringing our region the coldest air of the season thus far and even our first chance at some flurries!

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 20, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:17 PM GMT on October 20, 2008

Good Monday morning!

Weather Synopsis
A cold front is moving across Wisconsin this morning, and has developed some rain showers across our area overnight and into this morning. These showers should be out of here within the next few hours, then high pressure moves in from the west, bringing the midwest sunshine with cooler temperatures. Weather models late last week were predicting a big wind/rain storm coming through on Thursday, but the latest weather model runs have most of this large developing storm staying to our south and east. That being said, look for sunshine starting this afternoon and lasting until the middle of the week (evenings and overnights not included), then clouds and isolated showers stick around through the weekend with highs staying in the 50s.

Southern Wisconsin:
Look for showers to affect portions of south central and southeast Wisconsin. The showers were mainly north of a line from Janesville to Port Washington...and were moving east at 35 mph. The showers should reach the Milwaukee area around 8 am. Meanwhile a cold front has entered south central Wisconsin...and should reach the Madison area around 8 am...bringing north winds...and cooler air.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 17, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:47 PM GMT on October 17, 2008

Good Friday morning!

Weather Synopsis
Another day, another chance of light rain showers. Scattered showers passing through Minnesota and Iowa this morning will gradually make their way here later today as a weak disturbance moves through eastern South Dakota and Nebraska. There isn't a whole lot to this blob of showers, and they are expected to weaken further as they make their way eastward, so you probably don't even need to carry an umbrella with you today. One thing I've noted lately is that the forecasts from the National Weather Service are now clarifying all chances of showers as "rain showers," as soon that adjective will become more important as rain showers become snow showers in the next few weeks.

NowCast: (Source: National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
Motorists should be on the lookout for patchy dense fog early this morning. Cold temperatures and light winds have allowed the fog to form...primarily in low lying areas. Expect conditions to improve by 9 am.

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today: Mostly cloudy with a few light rain showers or sprinkles possible this afternoon and evening. No big deal. High of 54. Chance of rain 25%.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 15, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:34 PM GMT on October 15, 2008

Good Wednesday morning!

Weather Synopsis
Ahead of Monday evening's cold front, Minnesota, Iowa and western Wisconsin got a lot of rain, but the precipitation started to dissipate by the time it got to central and eastern Wisconsin, so all most of us got were windy and cooler conditions Monday night, along with a few light rain showers or sprinkles. This is not the case for our next cold front, currently stretching north/south across Minnesota and developing a large line of showers this morning across Wisconsin, Iowa, and other states southwest of us. Look for the rain to end this afternoon, with even cooler temperatures to follow.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 13, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:47 PM GMT on October 13, 2008

Good Monday morning!

Weather Synopsis
What an unbelievable weekend of weather Wisconsinites got to experience this weekend, with a good amount of sunshine and very mild temperatures near 80 degrees! Today looks to continue that trend, as a cold front stretching across Minnesota is still pushing warm southerly winds into the western Great Lakes region. Look for this last burst of summer to quickly come crashing down upon us though, with showers possible tonight and tomorrow morning with much colder Canadian air to follow behind the front. After tomorrow, high temperatures will have a challenging time getting to 60, let alone 80, with light snow showers possible by Thursday night. Okay, I'm mostly kidding about that last part, but I wouldn't be surprised if northern Wisconsin got a few flakes before the week is done!

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 10, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:00 PM GMT on October 10, 2008

Good Friday morning!

Weather Synopsis
The rumors are true... a weekend of superb weather awaits us! Mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine are expected straight through Sunday, thanks to high pressure over the Great Lakes combining with a warm front to our northwest, bringing warm southerly winds to our area. This time of the year, warm weather is usually accompanied by breezy conditions, and this weekend will not be an exception. High temperatures in the 70s are going to quickly change back to near 60 next week, so you had best enjoy it now while it lasts! Just be thankful the warm weather is arriving during a weekend and not in the middle of the work week.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 6, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:53 PM GMT on October 06, 2008

Good Monday morning!

Weather Synopsis
Yesterday's Brewers and Packers games ended just in time for me to quick mow the lawn before the rains came in, which is good since by the time I get home from work it's only light for less than an hour, which doesn't give me much time to get our big yard mowed! Anyway, this morning the entire state is cloudy and there are scattered showers across the northern half of Wisconsin. Look for these showers to slowly exit our state later this morning, with some breaks in the clouds expected this afternoon. Another round of showers is expected later in the day tomorrow through Wednesday morning as a cold front moves through, but after that we may be dry for a few days.

Isolated light rain showers will cross northern sections of south central and southeast Wisconsin early this morning. Wisconsin Weather Update for October 3, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 1:16 PM GMT on October 03, 2008

Good Friday morning!

Weather Synopsis
When writing my weather forecast Wednesday morning, I saw a lot of clouds coming our way, but none of the four major weather models I looked at were predicting any precipitation. So imagine my surprise when I left work and the sidewalk was wet! Well, that's the way it goes sometimes; nobody ever said this was an exact science, but we'll try to do a little better today. A strong low pressure system over Hudson Bay in Canada, which has draped us with clouds and isolated rain showers over the last couple days, has moved further east. This means we should see more sunshine over the next couple days as the next significant storm system doesn't arrive until Sunday. Behind a cold front to our south, look for cool daytime temperatures and cold overnight temperatures to continue, but we may warm up a bit by early next week.

Important Weather Statement: (Source: National Weather Service)
Fox Cities:
... Frost advisory in effect from 1 am to 7 am CDT Saturday...
Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall into
the lower to middle 30s tonight. This will result in frost
formation in most locations. Places along the Bay and Lake
Winnebago will probably stay warm enough to prevent frost.

A frost advisory means that frost is possible. Sensitive outdoor
plants may be killed if left uncovered.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=GRB

Southern Wisconsin:
... Frost advisory in effect from midnight tonight to 7 am CDT Saturday...
Frost will develop away from Lake Michigan after midnight tonight
as temperatures fall into the lower to middle 30s.

A frost advisory is issued when frost is expected to develop
during the growing season. Those with agricultural interests are
urged to protect or harvest tender vegetation. Potted plants

... Significant change in our weather will occur this weekend...

The first significant storm system coming inland from the
northeast Pacific will bring a temporary end to our dry and warm
Fall weather this weekend.

Rain will increase across northern Nevada and California today then
work southeast into central Nevada and California tonight. Rain
showers and high elevation snow will increase across the southern
Great Basin and Mojave Desert Saturday. The heaviest precipitation
will occur over Lincoln County late Saturday afternoon and evening
associated with the cold front. The snow level will stay above
9000 feet only lowering to around 8000 feet for a brief period
following the cold front. The rain showers and high elevation snow
showers will end across most of eastern California and southern
Nevada Saturday night before tapering off across northwest Arizona
Sunday morning.

A period of strong and gusty winds will also accompany this system
today and Saturday. Southwest winds will increase in the Mojave
Desert with wind gusts around 40 mph occurring in northwest San
Bernardino County. With the cold front lying across central Nevada
Saturday afternoon... southwest winds will increase more in
eastern California... southern Nevada and northwest Arizona. Wind
gusts of 45 to 50 mph are possible which will create areas of
blowing dust and sand. A brief downslope wind event may also occur
along The East Slope of the southern Sierra and Owens Valley.

Finally... temperatures will be much cooler on Sunday. For Las
Vegas the high temperature today will be around 90 degrees with a
forecast of 77 degrees on Sunday. In the mountains... Mount Charleston
will be around 65 degrees today with a forecast of 52 degrees
Sunday.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 1, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:23 PM GMT on October 01, 2008

Good Wednesday morning!

Weather Synopsis
Many of us are seeing sunshine out of our windows this morning, but this won't last for too much longer as more clouds are streaming southward from Canada thanks to a strong pressure gradient between an area of high pressure to our west and a low pressure system to our east. So look for mostly cloudy, breezy and cool conditions again today, but slightly warmer weather is on the extended outlook once these northerly winds from Canada subside.
