Wisconsin Weather Update for August 29, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:10 PM GMT on August 29, 2008

TGIF!

Weather Synopsis
Well this is a cakewalk of a forecast! Behind yesterday's cold front which brought scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms to the state, high pressure is moving in and planning on staying around a while, so we're going to have to get used to sunshine and seasonable temperatures through the weekend and into next week. Twist your arm, right?

NowCast: (Source: National Weather Service)
Fox Cities:
watch out for patchy dense fog this morning... Patchy dense fog is reducing visibilities to just a few hundred feet in some places early this morning. The Northwoods and areas near the lake and Bay have the most fog...but it is patchy and not in all areas. The fog should dissipate between 8 am and 9 am.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=GRB

Southern Wisconsin:
Fog was occurring over portions of south central and southeast Wisconsin. Some of the fog was dense...reducing visibilities to less than 1/4 mile. The fog was thickest in the Wisconsin River Valley. Winds may increase a bit toward sunrise. If so...the dense fog would begin to lift. Otherwise visibilities will begin to improve by around 8 am with the Morning Sun. Motorists should be on the lookout for the areas of dense fog...and reduce speed.

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 27, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 11:37 AM GMT on August 27, 2008

Good Wednesday morning!

Weather Synopsis
Another sunny morning, courtesy of high pressure to our east, will be short-lived as a cold front is sweeping across the eastern Dakotas, developing showers and thunderstorms ahead of it in eastern Minnesota. We'll see clouds on the increase tonight followed by scattered showers and thunderstorms tomorrow. We won't see much of a temperature drop behind the front, but Autumn really is right around the corner. Did you know that Rhinelander dropped to 34 degrees Monday morning, tying a record low temperature for that date? Frost in August is about as crazy as instant replay in baseball. Oh wait...

Most of the activity will be relegated to a region...north of a line...from Granite Falls...to Gaylord to New Prague. The area of disturbed weather will continue to trek east at about 30 mph. A few of the strong thunderstorms may produce pea size hail...and wind gusts up to 45 mph. Short bursts of heavy rainfall are also in the cards...as the strongest thunderstorms pass your location. Additional rainfall totals for the region mentioned...will vary between five hundredths of an inch ...to just over one inch prior to 630 am. Is a Mega-Katrina "Hypercane" Possible? MIT Scientist Says "Yes"
MIT's Kerry Emanuel describes the worst nightmare hurricane that could ever happen -a "hypercane" with winds raging around its center at 500 miles an hour. Water vapor; sea spray and storm debris are spewed into the atmosphere, punching a hole in the stratosphere 20 miles above the Earth's surface; at landfall, its super-gale-force winds would flatten forests and toss boulders with a 60-foot tsunami-like storm surge flooding nearby shores. The water vapor and debris could remain suspended high in the atmosphere for years, disrupting the climate and the ozone layer.

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 20, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 11:37 AM GMT on August 20, 2008

Good Wednesday morning!

Weather Synopsis
The large area of high pressure which has brought the Midwest beautiful late-summer weather (with a hint of Autumn) over the last several days is moving off to refresh the east coast. In it's place will eventually be a low pressure system, which is taking its time moving across the western United States and really enjoying the beautiful Rocky Mountain scenery. Look for the winds to pick up again and shift direction to become from the south, meaning warmer and more humid air will be returning to Wisconsin, along with the chance of thunderstorms late tomorrow, Friday, and into Saturday morning.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

NowCast: (Source: National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
Patchy fog will linger through the early morning across the area. Visibilities will be mostly in the one to Three Mile range...however localized dense fog will reduce the visibility to one quarter mile or less. The dense fog will be most noticeable and persistent in low areas and river valleys. If you encounter one of these dense fog areas...slow down and leave plenty of distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.

this time.

... Precautionary/preparedness actions...
residents and visitors across southeast South Carolina should
continue to monitor the latest forecasts and statements from the
National Weather Service concerning Tropical Storm Fay.

... Storm surge and storm tide...
persistent east to northeast winds will help drive tides up
through Thursday along the southern South Carolina coast. Tide
levels up to 1 foot above predicted levels can be expected today

Thursday into Friday. These elevated tides Thursday and Friday
may produce shallow coastal flooding along the coast... rivers and
adjacent marsh areas.

rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches may occur across much of
southeast South Carolina Wednesday through Friday as Fay moves
slowly towards the northeast Florida coast. These amounts may
produce flooding across the region and a Flash Flood Watch may

Fay move inland.

... Rip currents and beach erosion...
there will be an elevated risk for rip currents along the beaches
of south coastal South Carolina into Friday. A persist northeast
to east wind will also produce minor to moderate beach erosion
along the beaches... especially east and northeast facing beaches
such as Folly Beach and Hunting Island.

... Next update...
the next Tropical Storm Fay local statement will be issued by the
National Weather Service in Charleston around 9 am EDT or sooner
if conditions warrant.

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 15, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:27 PM GMT on August 15, 2008

TGIF!

Weather Synopsis
This might just be the easiest forecast I've written up in quite some time. Simply put, a very large and slow-moving area of high pressure is covering much of the northwestern and north-central United States today. This, plus the lack of any significant low pressure systems in the U.S., mean that dry weather can be expected for most if not all of the next several days. A front stretching southwestward stemming from a low pressure system over Hudson Bay in Canada might give us an isolated thundershower tomorrow evening, but otherwise, the next chance of rain doesn't come until the middle of next week. So enjoy!
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today’s Forecast Grade: A

Sunday: Partly cloudy and becoming somewhat humid but still not too bad, highs mid- 80s, dew points lower 60s.

Next Week:
Monday: Partly cloudy, very warm and somewhat humid, highs 85-90, dew points mid- 60s.

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 13, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 11:43 AM GMT on August 13, 2008

Good Wednesday morning!

Weather Synopsis
Scattered showers are spread out across Wisconsin and the rest of the Great Lakes region this morning courtesy of a low pressure system to our northwest. While it's nothing compared to the torrential rains they're seeing in the southeastern United States today, it is enough to at least suggest you keep an umbrella with you if you're heading out today. Temperatures a few degrees below normal will slowly rise back into the low to mid- 80s by this weekend, but there are still no 90s in sight. And did you know that both Milwaukee and Madison haven't hit 100-degrees this entire decade? It's true.

NowCast: (Source: National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
Look for a band of rain...with an isolated thunderstorm possible...to cross eastern Sheboygan County between 445 am and 7 am. Expect hourly rainfall rates between 0.10 and 0.25 of an inch with this band. Expect scattered light rain showers and drizzle over portions of south central and southeast Wisconsin between 445 am and 7 am. Locations along and east of a Green Lake...Beaver Dam to Burlington line have the better chance of seeing the light precipitation. Another pocket of showers...with a few thunderstorms...is moving southeast at 20 mph from near Sparta in Monroe County. These showers and isolated storms will reach western Marquette County and northern Sauk County between 7 am and 715 am. Drivers should be alert for patchy fog during the early morning commute. Though visibilities will hold in the 4 to 6 mile range...locally dense fog in the Wisconsin River Valley will drop visibilities there to 1/4 mile or less.

Well, this is just about the most amazing thing I've ever seen. It's a lightning bolt that's shooting down from the sky, shot in slow motion. I'm not sure exactly how fast this camera is, but it's got to be shooting at a speed faster than the Casio EX-F1 can shoot at, at least at a resolution this high. Whatever, who cares? Wisconsin Weather Update for August 6, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 11:13 AM GMT on August 06, 2008

Good Wednesday morning!

Weather Synopsis
A weak area of high pressure just to our west is going to attempt to give Wisconsin another nice day today. And for the most part, it's going to succeed. However, an outflow boundary stemming from a low pressure system in the central Rocky Mountains could lead to just enough moisture and instability where an isolated "popcorn" thunderstorm could develop later this afternoon. Don't get your hopes up for any rain, though, as most of us I suspect will remain dry today. And I'm thinking you can expect a lot more sunshine and slightly cooler temperatures straight through the upcoming weekend.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today’s Forecast Grade: A-

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today: Sunshine this morning with more clouds this afternoon. We could see a thunderstorm pop up later this afternoon, but don't count on it. A little less humid with a high of 82 central, low to mid- 80s south. Chance of rain only 20%.

Tonight: Maybe an evening storm, otherwise partly cloudy. Lows near 60.

Tomorrow: Morning sunshine, then becoming partly sunny in the afternoon. Slightly cooler, highs upper 70s central, just above 80 south.

This Weekend:
Friday: Partly cloudy, a little cooler, highs 73-78.
Saturday: Partly sunny, highs 74-79.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy, a little warmer, maybe a storm north, highs 77-82. Chance of rain 20%.

Today and Tomorrow in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Isolated storms today, scattered storms tomorrow, hot, highs lower 90s but around 100 inland.
Heat advisory in effect from 10 am this morning to 8 PM EDT this evening...
Today might be the hottest day of the week with high temperatures
reaching 100 degrees in many areas. These temperatures... combined
with moderate humidity... will produce maximum heat indices of 109
to 112 degrees at most locations this afternoon. Heat indices may
exceed 105 degrees by late morning... and the highest heat indices
will occur between noon and 6 PM. Isolated locations along the
coast may see heat index values approach 114 degrees between 3 and
5 PM.
A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures combined with
moderate to high humidity will increase the risk of heat related
illnesses. Drink plenty of fluids... stay in an air conditioned
room... stay out of the sunshine... and check up on relatives and
neighbors. Ensure livestock and pets have plenty of water to

The other came through overnight, around 3am here in the Fox Valley and is still moving through far southern and eastern Wisconsin at this hour. Look for more warm and unstable air moving through Wisconsin over the next 24-36 hours, generating more showers and thunderstorms (slight risk of severe), with warm and humid temperatures eventually giving way to groovy 70s by the end of this week and the upcoming weekend. Parts of southern Wisconsin could even hit 90 degrees today, which would be a first all year believe it or not! We've hit 88 a few times but there's not a single 90 on the board yet.

Southern Wisconsin:
A line of strong thunderstorms will move out southern Wisconsin by 700 am. The leading edge of the line extends from Rockford to Kenosha. These thunderstorms will produce heavy rainfall at a rate of one to two inches in an hours time along with frequent cloud to ground lightning. Also...pea size hail and wind gusts to 45 mph may accompany these thunderstorms. The heavy rainfall could lead to the pooling of water on roadways. Drivers should use caution while driving this morning. Several wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph have been reported with these thunderstorms from 300 am to 600 am. These storms are moving to the southeast at roughly 40 mph. More scattered shower and thunderstorm activity is still ongoing behind the line...but not everybody will see its effect. In addition...storms in Iowa are moving to the east and should give areas south of Hwy 18 a chance for thunderstorms throughout the morning. Stay tuned for additional statements as these storms evolve this morning.

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 1, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:35 PM GMT on August 01, 2008

TGIF!

Weather Synopsis
A weak low pressure system is hovering over Wisconsin this morning. There's going to be just enough moisture and instability in the atmosphere this afternoon to give eastern Wisconsin a small chance at a thundershower, but otherwise things are looking very nice though this weekend with warm temperatures and an unhealthy dosage of sunshine. Look out for Monday though, as it could feel like an oven out there!

Southern Wisconsin:
Areas of fog are developing across southern Wisconsin early this morning. Most visibilities will hover around 2 to 3 miles...but local areas will see it drop to 1/2 mile or less. The fog is expected to burn off by mid morning. If driving...allow extra time to reach your destination...slow down and leave plenty of distance ahead of you and the next car. Use your headlights...even after sunrise.
