Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Updates Delayed

By: HaleStorm, 2:15 PM GMT on May 23, 2008

My main computer's hard drive crashed on Wednesday, and is still inoperable as of Friday. Since most of what I use to write my updates is on that PC (Weather Update Word template, weather bookmarks, email client (including my email list!), etc., my Monday/Wednesday/Friday Weather Update blog will be delayed until I get my computer working again. It does look like some mostly-nice weather is on the way for central and southern Wisconsin this Memorial Day weekend with sunshine today and tomorrow and scattered thunderstorms Sunday and Monday. Highs will probably be in the low to mid- 60s today, upper 60s to lower 70s tomorrow, and the low to mid- 70s Sunday and Monday.

Wisconsin Weather Update for May 21, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 11:41 AM GMT on May 21, 2008

Good Wednesday morning!

Weather Synopsis
It's a sunny, cool morning with temperatures mostly in the 30s. A cold front moved through Wisconsin yesterday, but all it's really going to do is make things a few degrees cooler. Clouds circulating from the low pressure system to our east will casually cover eastern Wisconsin for a portion of the day, but we'll still see some sunshine with more sun expected over the next few days. We may see some isolated rain showers tomorrow night or Friday but most of us will probably stay dry until Sunday or Monday, when a better chance of rain comes in.

Wisconsin Weather Update for May 19, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 11:41 AM GMT on May 19, 2008

Good Monday morning!

Weather Synopsis
It's a frosty Monday morning outside with bright sunshine and cool temperatures. However, we're going to enjoy just another few hours of sunshine this morning as clouds are on the increase, already having moved through western Wisconsin and making their way eastward. We will probably be cloud-covered from late morning through tonight with a mix of sunshine and clouds tomorrow, then more sunshine is expected for the rest of the work week. We may see a passing rain shower later today or tomorrow but the bigger storm the weather models were anticipating last Friday for the middle of this week has pretty much dissipated in the more recent model runs.

Wisconsin Weather Update for May 16, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 12:50 PM GMT on May 16, 2008

TGIF!

Weather Synopsis
Taking a quick look at the current weather map, there isn't a whole lot going on. A cold front stretching over Lake Superior may give Wisconsin some scattered showers today, tonight and tomorrow, but I'm thinking that most of the weekend will end up being dry. Probably not a bad idea to keep the umbrella handy just in case though! Temperatures will be slightly above normal today, but after the cold front passes, we'll see cooler air filter into the state this weekend and into next week.

Today’s Forecast Grade: B-

Wisconsin Forecast:

Saturday: Mostly cloudy, breezy and cooler with a passing shower from time to time. Most of the day will probably be dry. Highs low to mid- 60s central, upper 60s south. Chance of rain 30%.

Next Week:
Monday: Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms developing late. Highs 59-64. Chance of rain Monday evening 40%.
Tuesday: Maybe a morning shower, otherwise becoming partly sunny. Highs 60-65. Chance of Tuesday morning rain 30%.

Good Wednesday morning!

Weather Synopsis
After yesterday's mild afternoon of temps hitting 75 in the Fox Valley and 80 in Madison, it's a cloudy start to your Wednesday morning with a few widely scattered showers in the southern and far northern portions of the state. With the center of a low pressure system hanging over Antigo, Wisconsin right now and a cold front stretching to the southwest from this low, you can expect a few more widely scattered showers or an isolated thunderstorm this morning. Behind the cold front, look for cooler jacket weather and temps mostly in the 50s for the rest of the week.

Wisconsin Weather Update for May 5, 2008.

By: HaleStorm, 11:32 AM GMT on May 05, 2008

Good Cinco de Mayo Monday morning!

Weather Synopsis
A weak cold front is moving across central Wisconsin this morning, but besides a few clouds and cooler temperatures in the northern part of the state, it's really not going to affect our weather that much. Instead, high pressure dominating the southern and eastern United States will provide a greater influence on our weather, making today just as good if not even slightly better than yesterday. A strengthening low pressure system in the Rockies will start creating some trouble around here by late tonight and lasting perhaps through Wednesday, but look for some of the warmest temperatures of the season thus far tomorrow.

...Today's topic is...part 6...straight-line thunderstorm winds...
-------------------------------------------------------------------

...Signature of straight-line winds...
straight-line winds are often responsible for most of the wind damage
associated with a thunderstorm. These winds are often confused with
tornadoes because of similar types of damage and wind speeds. However
the strong damaging winds associated with straight-line winds are
unlike the rotating winds of a tornado. If you were to survey the
damage pattern left by straight-line winds...you would see debris...
such as uprooted trees...laid out in nearly parallel rows.

...Down-burst basics...
down-bursts are one example of damaging straight line winds. A
down-burst is a small area of rapidly descending rain and rain-cooled
air beneath a thunderstorm. Wind speeds in some of the stronger
down-bursts can reach 100 to 150 miles per hour which is similar to
that of a strong tornado. The winds produced from a down-burst often
travel in one direction...and the worst damage is usually on the
forward side of the down-burst. However...sometimes they will hit
the ground and spread out in all directions. In that case...damage
will tend to fan out from a large Center Point.

...Derechos...
another category of straight-line winds common to the Midwest are
known as derechos. Derechos usually occur in the midwestern states
in the late Spring and Summer. Derechos are created by the merging of
many thunderstorm cells...particularly just north of a warm
front...into a large cluster or a solid squall line extending for
many miles perpendicular to the warm front. The width of such a
cluster can range from 20 to 65 miles and the width of the squall
line can range from 10 to 20 miles. The length of the line can reach
100 miles or more.

In extreme cases...these storms can create maximum wind gusts of 150
mph. Not only can a derecho contain incredibly strong straight-line
winds...it is also capable of producing small tornadoes on the
northern hook-end of the line as well as in individual supercells
embedded within the squall line. As a result...these types of systems
can be extremely dangerous and produce widespread incredible damage.

...Hurricane-force thunderstorm wind frequency...
on average...Wisconsin experiences hurricane-force wind gusts of 74
mph or higher on 5 days per year. On average... Wisconsin
experiences a thunderstorm wind gust of 100 mph or more on one day
every other year.

...Examples of powerful downbursts...
on August 21 2002...numerous occurrences of thunderstorm winds blew
through primarily southeast Wisconsin...including a powerful 100 mph
macro-burst that tore through Brookfield Wisconsin. Many large trees
and street signs were toppled. In nearby Milwaukee Wisconsin...an 80
mph gust ripped a 100 foot long blimp from it/S mooring and blew it
six blocks through the downtown area. Damage totaled in the millions
of dollars. Thankfully...no one was injured or killed in these
events.

Always keep in mind that major damage to a home...building or any
personal property can be caused by a variety of different straight-
line wind events. Always take cover when strong thunderstorm winds
threaten.

As with any severe weather...stay tuned to NOAA all hazards weather
radio or your local TV or radio stations for the latest forecast and
any severe weather watches or warnings.

and any watches/warnings/advisories please visit our web site at...
