Winter Storm Watch is cancelled for Wisconsin

Hah! I had a feeling this would happen as the last few model runs haven't indicated a lot of moisture with this system, which is a little unusual because panhandle hooks tend to bring heavier snow amounts with all that Gulf of Mexico moisture. Southeastern Wisconsin could still get 4-6", though!


Fox Valley:
...Winter Storm Watch is cancelled...

The National Weather Service in Green Bay has cancelled the
Winter Storm Watch.

The storm system heading for the Great Lakes has headed further
southeast. At this time only 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected to
fall Friday and Friday evening. Therefore the Winter Storm Watch
has been cancelled.


Waukesha:
... Snow Advisory in effect from 6 am to 6 PM CST Friday...

The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan has issued a
Snow Advisory... which is in effect from 6 am to 6 PM CST Friday.
The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

Snow will spread over south central and southeast Wisconsin
Friday. The snow may be moderate at times. Snow accumulations
between 4 and 6 inches are likely.

A Snow Advisory is issued when 3 to 6 inches of accumulations are
expected in 12 hours or less with winds less than 25 mph. Be
prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities. Use
caution while driving.

Here we go again ... Winter Storm Watch for Wisconsin Friday morning and afternoon

I am not overly impressed with this morning's model run for Friday (looked more like Snow Advisory criteria and not a WSW to me), but the NWS has went ahead with issuing a Winter Storm Watch for Wisconsin Friday morning and afternoon. Their statements follow:

Fox Valley:
...Winter Storm Watch in effect from Friday morning through
Friday afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Green Bay has issued a Winter
Storm Watch...which is in effect from Friday morning through
Friday afternoon.

Low pressure across Missouri Friday morning will move into lower
Michigan by Friday evening. Snow will overspread the area
Friday morning...and may become heavy at times across northeast
and east central Wisconsin Friday afternoon. Snowfall totals
over 6 inches are possible south of a Marshfield to Sturgeon
Bay line.

A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant
snow that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest
forecasts for any changes on the upcoming winter storm.

The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan has issued a
Winter Storm Watch for Friday.

Snow is expected to develop across the area later Thursday night
and more likely Friday morning. The snow may become heavy on
Friday as a low pressure system heads northeast from the Southern
Plains.

latest winter weather forecasts.

Weather Update Game Results and Snow Update

These results are a day late - we decided to spend the night in Oconomowoc last night due to the strong winds/blowing snow/icy road conditions. Waukesha only got an inch or two of snow since most of the precipitation on Saturday evening was rain, but there was a 3-foot snowdrift by our garage door here in Appleton when we got home this morning! Additional snowfall reports from the NWS follow my game results, and look for the next chance for decent snowfall in Wisconsin this Thursday night.

A vigorous low pressure area moved south to north across eastern
Wisconsin Sunday...dropping heavy snowfall over the area...especially
across central portions of Wisconsin. Here is a list of the 2 day

This is the last Weather Update of 2007. Thank you everyone for taking a few minutes out of your life to read my ramblings! And after close to eight years of writing this weather blog, I finally surpassed 100 email subscribers as of Wednesday. You are all such a blessing! A powerful winter storm will bring the potential for 5 to 9
inches of snow and strong gusty winds Saturday night into Sunday.

Southern Wisconsin:
Dense fog advisory in effect until noon CST today...
Melting snow caused by above freezing temperatures and light
surface winds has allowed dense fog to develop across portions of
south central Wisconsin. The dense fog will reduce the visibility
to one quarter mile or less through at least mid morning.

Temperatures are hovering around freezing so be cautious of
possible slick spots developing on untreated roadways. Little
improvement is anticipated until late morning.

If driving... slow down and use your low beam headlights. Leave
plenty of distance between you and objects ahead. Use extra
caution this morning as children may be waiting by the street for
the school bus.

Fog will continue this morning across most of south central and southeast Wisconsin. The fog will reduce visibilities to between one half mile and two miles. Patchy dense fog with visibilities of one quarter mile or less is likely...especially from Reedsburg and Madison...Jefferson and Elkhorn. Areas of fog will also spread into the Port Washington...Sheboygan and Fond Du Lac areas early this morning. Little improvement is expected through the morning...so morning commuters will need to slow down and allow extra distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead. Remember...children may be waiting near the street for their school bus.

... Air quality watch issued for today...
A humid... stagnant... air mass is forecast to continue affecting the
southern two-thirds of Wisconsin today. With hazy weather
conditions... there is a strong possibility that fine particle
pollution concentrations will reach unhealthy levels for persons in
sensitive groups in the southern two-thirds of Wisconsin.

Due to the possibility of elevated levels of fine particle
pollution in the region... the Wisconsin department of natural
resources has issued an air quality watch for today... Friday
December 21. This watch will expire at midnight tonight.

The air quality watch affects the people living in the counties of
Marquette... Green Lake... Fond Du Lac... Sheboygan... Sauk... Columbia...
Dodge... Washington... Ozaukee... Iowa... Lafayette... green... Dane...
Jefferson... Waukesha... Milwaukee... rock... Walworth... Racine and
Kenosha.

To help prevent fine particle pollution from reaching unhealthy
levels... people in the watch area are encouraged to help decrease
air pollution by reducing driving when possible... minimize vehicle
engine idling... postpone using small gas or diesel powered outdoor

Winter Storm Watch in effect from Saturday evening through Sunday morning...
The Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the portion of south
central Wisconsin along and west of a line from Green Lake to
Columbus to Stoughton and Monroe. This includes the cities of
Madison... Darlington... Montello... Reedsburg and Dodgeville.

Snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is expected Saturday night across this
portion of south central Wisconsin. In addition... strong west
winds of 20 to 30 mph with frequent gusts to 40 mph will create
areas of blowing snow. The blowing snow may drop visibilities to
less than one half mile at times.

The combination of snowfall and blowing snow would create
hazardous travel conditions across the region.

A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant
snow... sleet... or ice accumulations that may impact travel.

Now: At 7am with areas of dense fog and some freezing drizzle, temps are mostly around 34-degrees across the state. It's pretty unusual to have almost one temperature everywhere in Wisconsin at the same time, but there it is.

Synopsis: Moisture and warmer temperatures ahead of a weak warm front which moved through late yesterday is bringing warmer, southerly winds into Wisconsin this morning and is keeping us rather foggy this morning. The big news is not this fog though, but rather the storm system which will hammer Wisconsin Saturday evening. The weather models were not sure how this system was going to finally track, but they seem to be in agreement now that we're going to be in for some wintry weather later Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning.

Today: Areas of dense fog and patches of freezing drizzle this morning. Maybe a few glimpses of sunshine this afternoon but I wouldn't bet on it. High of 36.

Tonight: Cloudy, more areas of fog and freezing drizzle possible. Lows lower 30s.

Saturday: Cloudy and windy. Light rain possible during the morning and early afternoon, then rain changing over to snow Saturday evening from west to east. Windy with heavy snow possible Saturday night. Highs mid- 30s north, upper 30s central, near 40 south. Chance of precip 90%.

Sunday: Cloudy, windy and colder with light snow tapering off to flurries. Areas of blowing snow all day. Total expected storm accumulations are for 5-9" north, 4-7" central, 3-6" in Madison and 2-3" in Waukesha, but keep in mind that eastern Wisconsin may stay as rain longer than western counties so that could diminish some of these totals in southeastern and east-central Wisconsin. Highs only near 20. Chance of snow 40%.

Next Week:
Christmas Eve: Partly sunny, highs 23-28.
Christmas Day: Partly sunny, a little warmer, highs 28-33.
Boxing Day: Cloudy with light snow or flurries as the next big storm system misses us to the south. We think, anyway. Highs 26-31. Chance of snow 30%.
After That: Maybe some light snow on Friday, otherwise mostly cloudy and seasonable with highs in the 20s. And let's be honest, after a few days, the forecast is mostly a crapshoot anyway.

Extended Forecast for Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota: Foggy today, snow tonight through Sunday with several inches possible. Partly cloudy most of next week. Highs upper 30s today, upper 20s tomorow, then 15-25 after that. Particulate Matter Action Day.
Dense fog advisory in effect until 3 PM CST this afternoon...
Southerly winds will continue to transport air with higher
moisture content into the upper Midwest this Friday. As this
moist air flows across melting snowpack... it will surrender some
of its heat... cooling it to near saturation. As this
occurs... areas of persistent dense fog can be expected.
Visibilities of a quarter mile or less can be expected through
much of the daylight hours along and east of a line from New Ulm
to Hutchinson to Milaca.

Drivers are urged to be cautious due to low visibility and
possibility of moisture condensing on roadways and sidewalks
causing them to become slick.

A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be
reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving... slow down...

Extended Forecast for Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Rain today, isolated rain showers this weekend, more isolated showers possible Tuesday and Thursday. Highs mostly in the low to mid- 60s.
A large area of moderate to heavy rain will continue to rotate northeast through southern South Carolina and far southeast Georgia through 9 am. The heaviest rain is expected along a line from Hinesville to Savannah...Beaufort and Mount Pleasant...where rainfall rates of one inch per hour are possible. Synopsis: A cold front swept through Wisconsin last night, and although once again we didn't see any precipitation from it, it will lower our temperatures just a little bit today. The next interesting storm system is coming through on Saturday, although the latest model data has the heaviest part of the system missing us to the south and east. That's good news for weekend travellers, but we'll still be seeing some precip from the storm so it's not exactly an all-clear either.

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 17, 2007.

Good Monday morning!

Highlights of the Week:
Lisa: I hope you all had a great weekend. My first weekend highlight was celebrating my birthday on Friday with friends and some family in Madison at the Nitty Gritty Birthday Bar. I turned 32 and everyone made me feel really special in helping me celebrate. There were also some friends and family who gave me special birthday wishes via phone calls/voicemails, E-mails/E-cards. All of which meant a lot to me.

The other highlight of my weekend was our first of six Christmas celebrations with family. On Saturday night we went to Berlin for Christmas at my aunt Barb's house. It was fun getting together with many of my aunts, uncles, cousins, and second seconds. Three of my cousins have all had babies in 2007 so Bryce is no longer the youngest in the family. Bryce had some playmates but he seemed to enjoy playing more with his older cousins than his younger cousins. That's not too surprising though, because he interacts more with older children at daycare as well. Well that wraps up my long-winded update for this week. Have a great week.

Steve: Other than what Lisa mentioned above, my other highlight was spending the night in Madison at our friends Dave and Diane's house. After Diane and Lisa went to bed, Dave and I stayed up late playing Halo 3 for the Xbox 360 and Guitar Hero III for the Playstation 3. Those are a lot of fun to play!

Today’s Thought: The YMCA "Walk to Win" pedometer challenge has ended (wear a pedometer for three months, record your steps each day, and turn in your sheet at the end to enter a drawing). It's just as well because the RESET button got accidentally pressed several times a week, by Bryce, by bumping against something, by blinking, etc. But now I joined Humana's "Virgin HealthMiles" program where I wear this new, fancy GoZone USB pedometer, upload my steps each day, and can earn gift certificates to stores I actually shop at (Target, Best Buy, Amazon.com, etc.) based on the number of steps I walk. Lisa's been a member of this for a while now (she's already earned $150!) but they finally opened it up to friends/family of Humana employees. It's another cool gadget to add to my list of toys!

A cold front will move slowly south across the area through mid morning. By 9 am...the front will extend from near Edna to hobby Airport to Liberty. Dense fog advisory in effect until 10 am EST this morning...
Dense fog will encompass much of southern South Carolina and
southeast Georgia through mid-morning. Visibilities will drop to

bodies of water... marshes and other low-lying areas. Foggy
conditions will persist through the morning commute Wednesday with
visibilities improving slowly between sunrise and 10 am.

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 10, 2007.

Good Monday morning!

Highlights of the Week:
Lisa: I hope you had a great weekend. The highlight of my weekend was going Christmas shopping at the Gurnee Mills Mall. My friend Lisa and I traveled on a charter bus to Gurnee, IL. It was nice going on a bus. We didn't have to pay for gas, or worry about parking and traffic. We had a great time, and we did some very productive shopping. I have most of my Christmas shopping done now. I love the Christmas season but I don't enjoy making several shopping trips and it was nice to get most of it done all at once. I also enjoy the holidays so much more when I have all of my shopping done. We also finished putting up our Christmas tree. We still have to wrap presents, send out Christmas cards, and possibly find time to make some cookies. Well that wraps up my weekend. Have a great week.

Steve: The most interesting part of my week was probably Saturday night/Sunday morning, when I pulled my first all-nighter since my Weather Central days, deploying and testing our new "Your Accounts" section on Thrivent.com, the end of the first phase of a project that was many months in the making. The team didn't start the deploy until 12:30am (overnight outage window) and my biggest part of the deploy was at the very end, so I was up until almost 6am working on the site. The only thing missing at the end of the night was me having to go on-the-air on the second biggest AM radio station in Wisconsin and banter about the weather for a few minutes.

And as for our next snowstorm, the models have been all over the place trying to predict this thing, and now light snow is expected Saturday night into Sunday with heavier snow possible Monday night.

Now: At 7am with a mostly cloudy sky and a few flurries near Lake Michigan, temps are near 10 north and mid- to upper teens central and south.

Synopsis: Last night's storm had a more narrow path to it, focusing mostly on west-central and southern Wisconsin. Northern Wisconsin got about half an inch of snow, the Fox Valley got maybe 1-2", but southern Wisconsin got 4-7" of fresh powder. And we're just getting started. Another storm coming out of the southwest could develop several more inches across Wisconsin Thursday night, and an even stronger "panhandle hook" storm could make travel interesting Saturday afternoon and evening.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, cold, lows around five below zero north, five above zero central and south. A pretty cold night for Saint Nicholas' annual rounds.

Tomorrow: Increasing clouds with snow developing later in the day. My best guess is for 2-4" of new snow by Friday morning. Breezy, highs near 20 north, mid- 20s central and south. Chance of snow 75%.

This Weekend:
Friday: Becoming partly sunny, still breezy, highs 29-34.
Saturday: Snow developing late in the day, possibly mixed with sleet or freezing rain south. Snow becoming heavy Saturday night and I wouldn't be surprised to see 4-7" from this system if it keeps its currently-projected path. Windy, highs 22-27. Chance of snow 60%.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy and breezy with light snow possible, highs 24-29. Chance of snow 30%.

Very dry conditions along with gusty southwest winds will occur
today as a dry cold front approaches from the northwest. Minimum
relative humidity values will reach critical levels... around 15
percent inland and 17 to 23 percent closer to the coast. Southwest
winds will increase this afternoon... reaching speeds of around 15
mph with gusts up to around 25 mph at times. These winds are just
below red flag warning criteria... and a red flag warning may be
needed if winds become stronger than forecast.

The combination of the very low relative humidity... gusty winds and
dry fuels will result in an increased fire danger across southeast
South Carolina today. The public is urged to follow the advice of
local forestry officials as outdoor fires may become difficult to control.

Another storm strikes as aldermen blast weekend's plowing operations
Milwaukee Department of Public Works officials promised to do better cleaning up an overnight snowstorm after aldermen lashed out at the department Tuesday, blasting its weekend snow-plowing efforts as the worst in decades.
Up to 5 inches of new snow was expected by 9 a.m. today. Two traffic fatalities were reported, at least one related to the weather.

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 3, 2007.

Good Monday morning!

Highlights of the Week:
Lisa: I hope you all had a great weekend. The highlights of my weekend were spending time with friends. On Friday, we had an "adults only" night and enjoyed a tasty dinner at HuHot Mongolian Grill with our friends Jason and Nicole and Steve and Trish. Saturday we braved the winter weather and traveled to Rhinelander to visit our friends Clair and Becky. We enjoyed being "snowed in" at their apartment and eating lots of yummy food, playing video and board games, and just enjoying each other's company. That wraps up my weekend. Have a great week.

Steve: Sometimes our highlights differ, but again, this week they're the same. I thought I was doing some "storm chasing" when we drove north shortly before the storm hit, where 8-12" were expected, compared to only the 4-7" expected in the Fox Valley, but in the end it turned out Rhinelander got only 5" and Appleton over 7". Sounds like southern Wisconsin got around 2-6" before it changed over to mixed precipitation. I'm happy to report that our snowblower worked great again after nine months of inactivity.

Synopsis: As the strong area of low pressure, which brought our snowblowers out of our garage for the first time this season, moves east to bother New England, we're getting cold northwesterly winds behind the low, which will keep us breezy and cold today. An Alberta Clipper-type storm, currently in southeastern Alberta, will swing through tomorrow. These drier, fast-moving storms tend to dump a quick 2-3" of fluffy snow before quickly moving away.

Today: Partly sunny and colder. Breezy in the morning. Highs low to mid- 20s north, 26 central, and near 30 south.

Tonight: Becoming cloudy. Lows lower teens north, upper teens central and south.

Strong northerly winds will continue this morning over the coastal
areas from High Island to Matagorda Bay. Expect winds of 20 to 25
mph with gusts near 30 mph through mid morning from High Island to Freeport.
Areas from around Freeport to Matagorda Bay can expect winds of
around 25 mph with a few gusts near 35 mph. After 9 am winds
should begin to gradually relax. This afternoon winds of 15 to 20
mph will still be possible along the immediate coast.

Drivers of vans... campers... trailers... and other high-profile
vehicles should be alert to the danger of these winds... especially
when driving along east to west oriented roads or elevated
roadways.
