Today’s Thought: So here's an odd story for you: As I'm getting home from work early last week, I open up the garage door and there's a dead mouse stuck to the bottom of our garage door! The mouse is stuck to the door by its lower back and is rising up with the door! And at the end as the bottom of the door starts to curve inwards, the mouse fell off and dropped about six feet back to the ground! I figure I either smushed it that morning when I closed the garage door on my way to work, or it tried sneaking underneath the door during the day and got itself stuck. Either way, it was pretty funny!

Brief EF0 Tornado Touchdown in Racine County
An upper level trough, combined with an unstable air mass, produced scattered strong thunderstorms across south central and southeast Wisconsin during the afternoon on Thursday 9/27/2007. These thunderstorms produced 1/2 to 3/4 inch hail.
Around 350 pm in northern Racine county, an outflow boundary from thunderstorms to the north intersected with a new strong thunderstorm that produced a brief weak tornado touchdown around the town of North Cape, which is about 15 miles west of Racine.

Wisconsin Weather Update for September 24, 2007.

By: HaleStorm, 11:48 AM GMT on September 24, 2007

Good Monday morning!
This is Lisa and I'm back with another personal family update, and I hope you all had a great weekend. We had a busy and fun Saturday with our friends Jason and Nicole. Nicole and I enjoyed a girls day of shopping while Steve and Jason took care of Bryce and Grant while working on replacing some of our old garage drywall, trimmed some bushes, and killed a swarm of bees that had a hive inside of our garage. We then had a nice dinner at Victoria's. Sunday after church I went to cousin Bridget's baby shower while Steve watched the Packer's game.

Not too much is new with Bryce except that he has started swimming lessons again and he's doing very well. He's my little water baby. Bryce loves walking to the park near our house. We always bring his little red car or Radio Flyer wagon along, but usually instead of sitting in it, Bryce wants to be the person who pulls it from our house to the park. He's very good when it comes to watching out for cars too. If he sees one coming in the distance, he'll say "Car!" then move to the side of the road and stay still until after the car passes. If it's a ball rolling onto the road, he'll blindly run for it, but we're working on that.

Well that wraps up our update. Have a great week.

2007 Summer Playoff Final Point Standings
After another very close race, congratulations to the married team of Dan and Lin for winning their second championship! They've won two of the last three seasons, but this time they did it with two bonus points (as opposed to the Winter 2007 season, when they were last entering the playoffs but had a perfect week and won it all).
Look for the Autumn 2007 season to start next Monday and in the meantime you'll see a couple new game-related polls this Wednesday and Friday. If you have any suggestions for how I should tweak the games/season format or new game ideas, send them in this week!

Synopsis: The first full day of Fall will feel like the first day of Summer! Ahead of a strong low pressure system building in northwestern Minnesota, we will continue to see warm southerly winds which will push temperatures past the 80-degree mark today. Today’s Forecast Grade: B+

Wisconsin Forecast:
Now: At 7am with windy conditions, a partly sunny sky, and isolated showers north, temps are mostly around the mid- 60s. Not a bad early morning temperature in the second half of September!
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html
http://www.pollen.com/state.asp?id=wi

Synopsis: Ahoy! Low pressure is centered just to our north, over Lake Superior, and is pushing showers through northern Wisconsin and into southern Ontario, Canada. The proximity of the low is also what's giving us these windy conditions this morning. As the low pushes to our east, look for sunshine to overtake the rest of the clouds but warm temperatures should remain for a while as only slightly cooler air is pushing in behind this cold front. Should be a great weekend too, Aye!
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Morning showers north, otherwise becoming partly cloudy. Windy this morning but decreasing this afternoon. Highs lower 70s north, 77 central, and upper 70s to near 80 south.

Tonight: Mostly clear, lows mid- 40s north, low to mid- 50s central and south.

Tomorrow: Mostly sunny, highs lower 70s north, mid- 70s central, upper 70s south.

This Weekend:
Friday: Becoming mostly cloudy and warmer but Avast! Showers may develop, although most of these will probably be north. Highs 82-87. Chance of rain 50% north, 30% central, 20% south.
Saturday: Mostly sunny, highs 74-79. A great day to drink ye grog and watch ye fellow landlubber Badger football team send Iowa to Davy Jones' Locker.
Sunday: Partly cloudy and breezy, highs 76-81.

Other City Forecasts:

Today and Tomorrow in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota: Partly cloudy today, storms developing late tomorrow, highs lower 70s today and near 80 tomorrow.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/MN/Minneapolis.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USMN0503

Today and Tomorrow in Evansville, Indiana: Sunshine, highs upper 80s.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/IN/Evansville/KEVV.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USIN0190

Today and Tomorrow in League City and Pearland, Texas: Scattered storms today, partly cloudy and dry tomorrow, highs near 90.
Through 630 am...isolated to scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will continue from around Webster to Galveston Bay to more than 100 miles south of High Island. This band of precipitation will shift to the west with individual showers moving northwest at 10 to 15 mph. Rainfall accumulations should be light with areas along and east of the Interstate 45 corridor receiving amounts averaging less than one tenth of an inch.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/TX/League_City.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USTX0745
http://www.wunderground.com/US/TX/Pearland.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USTX1029

Today and Tomorrow in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Showers developing late today and continuing tomorrow, highs near 80.
High surf advisory in effect until 6 am EDT Thursday...
High risk of rip currents today...
The large pressure difference between strong high pressure to the
north and a stalled frontal boundary and developing area of low
pressure to the south will continue to cause strong northeasterly
winds and rough surf into at least Thursday.

Winds speeds during this time will average 20 to 25 mph... but
with gusts up to 30 mph... especially over the Georgia beaches. As
a result... rough conditions with pounding surf and a strong
longshore or parallel current will continue at the beaches and
other coastal areas.

The strong winds were producing occasional breakers to 5 feet in
the surf zone... although more consistently over the Georgia
coastline... while over the nearby coastal waters the seas are as
high as 8 feet. As a result of these conditions... the high surf
advisory remains in effect.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion.

A continuation of the rough surf... with 2 to 3 foot swells will
combine with the strong northeasterly winds to produce an
enhanced risk of rip currents through at least the next couple of
days. There is a high risk of rip currents along the southern
South Carolina and north coastal Georgia beaches today.

Remember that during a high risk... rip currents are life
threatening to anyone entering the surf. You are strongly urged
not to go into the water.

In addition... tides continue well above predicted levels... with
recent tidal departures running as high as 1.5 feet above
predicted levels. While this continues to be below any levels
where minor and shallow coastal flooding begins... further
departures are expected as the week progresses... and we get
closer to astronomical high tides. Thus coastal flooding could
become a problem... especially if rains develop later in the week.

A combination of these conditions will also produce areas of
minor or moderate beach erosion the next several days...
especially around the times of high tide. However... should the
tight pressure gradient result in winds that are higher than now
expected... or should the strongest winds persist over the same
area for a prolonged period... then localized severe erosion may
also occur especially as tide heights begin to increase.

Please relay any reports of rip currents... beach erosion or an
estimate of the height of The Breakers to your National Weather
Service in Charleston. You can call toll free at 1-888-383-
2024 and leave a message.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio all hazards... TV... or your local
news source for the latest weather information from your National
Weather Service in Charleston.

Additional information is also available on the internet at
weather.Gov/chs.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/SC/Hilton_Head_Island.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USSC0155

Today and Tomorrow in Las Vegas, Nevada: Sunshine, windy, highs lower 90s today and only mid- 80s tomorrow. Shiver me timbers matey!
Wind Advisory in effect from 11 am this morning to 9 PM PDT this evening...
South to southwest winds will increase across the southern Great
Basin and Mojave Desert today as a strong low pressure system
moves south into northern California. South to southwest winds
will become sustained in the 15 to 30 mph range by about noon with
gusts generally between 40 and 45 mph. Wind gusts around 55 mph
are possible along the east slopes of the Sierra above 5000 feet.
Strong winds will persist into the evening hours before decreasing
after about 9 PM PDT / MST.

The strong wind gusts could cause blowing sand and dust which may
suddenly reduce visibility. Drivers of vans... campers...
trailers... and other high profile vehicles should be especially
alert to the danger of these winds.

In addition... strong winds in excess of 30 mph will create dangerous
boating conditions on area lakes during the advisory period.
These winds will create very choppy waters and generate large
waves which could capsize or swamp small craft. If you do venture
out onto the lakes... avoid the open water and stay close to shore
or in protected coves and inlets.

Wisconsin Weather Update for September 17, 2007.

By: HaleStorm, 12:52 PM GMT on September 17, 2007

Good Monday morning!
Here I am with our personal family update and I hope you all enjoyed your weekend. We had a busy day on Saturday but otherwise we had a fairly relaxing weekend. Saturday morning was my Mary Kay party at my mom's house, and during the party, Steve's dad stopped by our house to watch the Badgers game with Steve. Saturday afternoon we went to my cousin Troy's wedding. We had a great time, and Bryce was able to meet some cousins and friends who he was meeting for the first time. I don't get to see my dad's side of the family very often and it was nice to see everyone again. Bryce was very energetic this weekend, but not really in a bad way. He was like a human pinball running from one thing to the next, only stopping when we finally convinced him that it was naptime or bedtime. Right now it's Elmo, Barney, cars, balls and books that keep him happy, and it's even better if there's a small bowl of Apple Jacks or Frosted Mini-Wheats handy for him to munch on. Well that wraps up our update. Have a great week.

Summer 2007 Regular Season Unofficial Final Point Standings
Here are the unofficial point standings that will end the Summer 2007 regular season! Angie finishes up as the top player during the regular season and will get 3 points going into next week's playoff round (which will look very similar to this week except with regular point values). Despite forgetting to play on Monday, Brian F. still maintained 5th place and will get 2 playoff points. There will actually be 11 people in next week's playoffs, as there was a tie for 9th place between Greg and Adam E. And with a perfect week, Deb will also be in next week's playoffs, albeit with no playoff points to start the week. Two seasons ago Dan won it with no points to start, so it's definitely possible!

http://library.thinkquest.org/2886/
http://holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/index.htm

Today’s Forecast Grade: C+

Important Weather Statement: (Source: National Weather Service)
Northern Wisconsin:
Freeze warning in effect from 1 am to 7 am CDT Saturday...
Temperatures will fall into the 30s this evening... and drop below
freezing after midnight.
A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or
highly likely. These conditions will kill crops and other
sensitive vegetation. Cars and other vehicles could be damaged if
they are not protected with antifreeze.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=GRB

Southern Wisconsin:
Frost advisory in effect from 1 am to 8 am CDT Saturday...
Frost is expected over much of south central Wisconsin tonight.
A frost advisory is issued when frost is expected to develop
during the growing season. Those with agricultural interests are
urged to protect or harvest tender vegetation. Potted plants
normally left outdoors should be covered or brought inside away
from the cold.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=MKX

Wisconsin Forecast:
Now: At 7am with cold sunshine, temps are in the lower 40s north, mid- 40s central and upper 40s south.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html
http://www.pollen.com/state.asp?id=wi

Synopsis: We've definitely reached that time of the year when every warm day is accompanied by a brisk wind, but you have to take advantage of these days because they will be fewer and farther between as we progress into Autumn. Such was the case yesterday, as warm southerly winds ahead of a cold front brought us into the 70s, but behind the front we have colder northwesterly winds which will keep us in the 40s and 50s today. Despite a cool weekend, next week we could be in the 70s and even 80s once again.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Partly sunny north, partly cloudy central and mostly sunny south. Much cooler than yesterday with highs in the lower 50s north, 56 central, and upper 50s south.

Tonight: Mostly clear and cold overnight with frost possible central and south and a full freeze north, lows upper 20s north and lower 30s central and south. Make sure your thermostat is set to HEAT and not COOL!

Saturday: Mostly sunny, highs near 60 north and central, lower 60s south.

Wisconsin... including the Alexandria... St cloud... Twin
Cities... Redwood Falls... Mankato... and Eau Claire Wisconsin

area including much of southeast California and southern Nevada.
Sustained south to southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph and wind gusts
up to 45 mph should be anticipated from late this morning through
this evening across the advisory area. These winds may lift dust
and sand and temporarily reduce visibilities. Motorists should use
extra caution and be alert to rapidly changing conditions.

Strong winds in excess of 30 mph will create dangerous boating
conditions within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area during
the advisory period. These winds will create very choppy waters
and generate large waves which could capsize or swamp small craft.
For your personal safety... operators of small craft are urged to
postpone their outings until the winds subside. If you do venture
out onto the lakes... avoid the open water and stay close to shore
or in protected coves and inlets.

Northwestern Wisconsin was even under a Frost Advisory last night. Today: Sunshine this morning, a few clouds this afternoon. Still cool, highs near 60 north, 63 central, and mid- 60s south.

Wisconsin Weather Update for September 10, 2007.

By: HaleStorm, 12:31 PM GMT on September 10, 2007

Good Monday morning!
This is Lisa with our family update and I hope you all had a great weekend. Our weekend was fairly uneventful. However, considering we have been so busy the last few weekends and we have plans again over the next few weekends, it was nice to have a weekend at home. My sister-in-law Katie is due to have her baby any day now and we are very excited for her and her hubby Bart as they are about to become new parents. As for our little guy, we went to Toys 'R Us on Saturday and got him a talking Elmo doll. It says over 200 different things, sings the Elmo's World theme song, and his mouth moves as he talks. Bryce loves it and has been carrying it around almost everywhere he goes. Well that wraps up our update. Have a great week.

Double Points Week
The last week of the summer regular season starts right now! Each topic below is worth up to four points each, and the best finisher this week gets an automatic bid into next week's playoffs. Have fun!

Summer 2007 Point Standings
Remember that next week is Double Point Week with more games than usual and definitely more points than usual. Also remember my new rule this season where the best finisher in Double Point Week not in the top nine automatically makes the playoffs regardless of how they did the first ten weeks of the season (although the tiebreaker is who has more points up to that point). So any one of you can still make it with a good score next week.

Today’s Thoughts: Sunday NFL Football has returned and the Brewers are back in a tie for first place after playing impressive baseball over the last week. I hear they're already printing playoff tickets in Milwaukee. And what do you think of the new line of iPods announced Wednesday, essentially making every iPod out there now obsolete! The Nano got shorter and fatter and now plays video, the Video iPod (now called the iPod Classic) went from 30Gb and 80Gb to 80Gb and 160Gb for the same price, the iPod Touch is an iPhone without the phone (and pretty neat), and the iPhone dropped in price from $600 to $400. Any of you plan on getting a new-generation iPod?

NowCast: (Source: National Weather Service)

Southern Wisconsin:
Patchy fog is expected through 8 am across southeast and south central Wisconsin. Visibilities will generally range from 2 to 4 miles. Localized areas of dense fog with visibilities of one quarter mile or less are expected...especially in low areas and river valleys. Dense fog was reported at the Burlington Airport. Be on the lookout for rapidly changing visibilities in the patchy fog early this morning. The bulk of the fog is expected to thin and dissipate between 7 and 8 am.

...Air quality watch issued for today...Wednesday September 5...

A warm and humid airmass is forecast to intensify over the Lake
Michigan region today. With the warm...hazy and stagnating
weather conditions...there is a strong possibility that ozone
concentrations will reach unhealthy levels for persons in sensitive
groups in eastern and southeastern Wisconsin.

Due to the possibility of elevated levels of ozone in the
region...the Wisconsin department of natural resources has issued an
air quality watch for today...Wednesday September 5. This watch
will expire at midnight Wednesday night.

The air quality watch affects the people living in the Wisconsin
counties of Sheboygan...Washington...Ozaukee...Jefferson...
Waukesha...Milwaukee...rock...Walworth...Racine and Kenosha.

To help prevent ozone from reaching unhealthy levels...people in the
watch area are encouraged to help decrease air pollution by reducing
driving when possible...delaying vehicle refueling until
evening...minimize vehicle engine idling...postpone using small gas
or diesel powered outdoor equipment...and practice energy
conservation.

Wisconsin Weather Update for September 4, 2007.

By: HaleStorm, 12:46 PM GMT on September 04, 2007

Good morning and Happy Tuesday,
This is Lisa with our family and weekend update, and I hope you all enjoyed a long weekend. We enjoyed spending time with family and friends. On Friday, Steve took a guys night with his friends Steve and Jason and went to the Brewers Game. Since the guys were at the game, Jason's wife Nicole and I hung out with our little guys Bryce and Grant.

Saturday, we spent the morning with my mom and step-dad at the downtown Appleton Farmer's Market. The weather was beautiful, and there were lots of people as well as lots of bees. Poor Bryce suffered his first bee sting. He was drinking juice and he had some on his hand, which must have attracted the bee, and he was stung on his left hand. He cried and his finger swelled up some, but then he seemed fine after we put some Benedryl spray on it. By the next day you could barely tell where he was stung, so he must not be allergic!

Sunday we went to Noah's Ark with my mother and step-father-in-law, and sister-in-law Kelley, followed by a yummy pizza dinner at MooseJaw Pizza and Brewing Company. Bryce was well behaved at Noah's Ark but he wasn't as interested in going in the water this year. He played a little bit, but spent most of the time in his stroller hanging out with his Nana Bev, and he had a good time. He was a little fussy and tired at the restaurant, but once the food came he was fine and he ate lots of pizza.

Monday was our free day at home to relax and get some stuff done. We watched five episodes of "The 4400" TV show and we're now all caught up!

Not too much is new with Bryce, although he is talking more and more every day. He isn't talking in full sentences yet, but he says lots of phrases and he's getting to have a pretty big vocabulary. If you teach him what something is once, he'll usually remember and refer to it by name the next time it comes up. He's starting to remember his numbers too, as last night when going through the numbers 1-10, Steve would say "one" and Bryce would follow with "two", "three." Bryce is rather possessive of his toys, and likes saying things like "my car," "my bear," "my ball pit," etc. And for the first time yesterday he pointed at me and said "my mama." It was so cute and my heart just melted. Well that wraps up our update. Have a great week.

For more family updates and other thoughts, check out Steve's Twitter Microblog, updated several times a week:

Chain Reaction Tuesday
Because of the short work week, there will be an update tomorrow and again on Friday, but I will not publish these answers in tomorrow's update. You have until Friday to get today's and tomorrow's games sent in. Also note that this is the last week of the regular season with normal point values. Next week is Double Point Week and after that is the playoff week.
