Good Monday Morning,

Weekend Update
This is Lisa with our weekend and Bryce update, and I hope you all had a great weekend. We had a free day at home on Saturday with a busy and fun day on Sunday. Sunday afternoon we went to our friends Liz and John's son Logan's 4th birthday party. Bryce had fun playing with Logan's Thomas the Train set, and we didn't even have to drive to the party since they are our next-door neighbors. Afterwards, we went to an Alaskan reunion party hosted by my father and stepmother-in-law. We had a great time and the food was wonderful. We all really enjoyed reliving the memories of the trip, telling stories, and looking at each other's pictures.

Bryce Update
Bryce is growing up and he's getting quite an attitude as well. Lately he's been very daddy-clingy and he only wants daddy to hold him. Sometimes if you try to pick him up or even just touch him and he doesn't want you to, he yells "NO,NO,NO!" He will push you out of your chair so he can sit in it, and everything is his, because he goes around saying "mine,mine,mine!" Besides his attitude, he has been doing some cute things as well. Daddy showed him how to use the DVD player, and now he knows how to take his Elmo DVDs out of the case, put them in the DVD player and turn it on all by himself. He'll crawl onto daddy's lap every time he plays his Nintendo DS. And last night, Bryce wanted to see his Grandpa Hale's train set so he kept asking "Choo Choo where are you???" Some of his many new words include pillow, puppy, and airplane, and he knows many Sesame Street characters by name now, including Ernie, Bert, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and of course, Elmo. With the EAA Air Show just a few miles away in Oshkosh, there were a lot of airplanes in the sky all week, and each time Bryce would see one, he'd point to the sky and yell "Airplane!" Bryce also had his 2 year pictures taken and we will be sharing them soon.

Synopsis: A large area of high pressure is centered right over east-central Wisconsin this morning, and this thing should keep us dry through at least Wednesday if not Friday. As the high moves east, our winds will shift and become from the southwest, meaning hot temperatures near or above 90 can be expected today and especially tomorrow and Wednesday, with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 expected to continue through next weekend. Enjoy the late summer heat as we're less than five months away from the Winter Solstice!

Today’s Thoughts: PDF Spam? Every few months, spammers change their tactics and send me (along with many of you I'm sure) massive quantities of different types of email. I have seen a lot less "buy this stock it's going to skyrocket" emails over the last couple weeks, and instead I've been getting a ton of emails with no subject line or text and just a .PDF attached. For me this is a little more annoying than the others since I have all email attachments going right to my Windows Desktop, which means my already plenty-cluttered desktop gets a ton of PDFs added to it every day. Hopefully no one has sent me any legit .PDF files as I've pretty much been blindly deleting all of them that come in!

Synopsis: Yesterday's thunderstorms were very hit-or-miss around here. They started popping up all over in the early afternoon, but were moving incredibly slowly. So some areas got several inches of rain, but here in Appleton the big rainfall missed us just barely to the west. It's just as well - now I can wait even longer before mowing my lawn again.
As for today, a cold front stretching across southern and east-central Wisconsin may develop more isolated thundershowers in these areas this morning, but otherwise, eventually look for some sunshine and slightly cooler and less humid weather behind the front.

Weather in the News:

Thursday rainfall varied
Storms and showers Thursday left significant rainfall in some areas, not so much in others.
According to the National Weather Service, Appleton received 0.15 inches while Austin Straubel International Airport recorded 0.05 inches while a half inch of rain fell on the east side of the Green Bay.
The heaviest rain fell in Wautoma in Waushara County where 4.7 inches was recorded.

Today’s Thoughts: NBA Games Fixed? So in case you missed the big news in the sporting world over the last couple of days, there are now allegations that an NBA basketball referee fixed the outcomes of games he refereed over the last two seasons, perhaps to repay a big gambling debt to the Mafia. This was done perhaps both by making sure the over/under total points went a certain way, or that a certain team always covered the point spread. Check this ESPN story for more details:

What do you think? If this becomes more than one bad apple referee and more refs get called out, is this something that could take down the whole league? Synopsis: If you take a quick peek at the surface map link below, you'll notice that there's not really a whole lot going on in Wisconsin today. There's a strong low pressure system up in northern Manitoba which might create some havoc for us on Thursday night and Friday morning, but in the meantime, look for a flux of heat and humidity coming from the west which will make things a little uncomfortable outside today and tomorrow, and could also develop an isolated storm or two. Nothing's expected to be severe though, so at least we've got that going for us, which is nice.

Happy Monday morning,

Weekend Update
This is Lisa with our weekend update and I hope you all had a nice weekend. We had a busy week. Steve and I celebrated our 5-year wedding anniversary with two different outings - we went to the Dancing with the Stars Tour at the Resch Center on Monday night, then on Friday night we went ballroom dancing at the Crystal Ballroom. It had been awhile since we've been out dancing but it was a nice date night. While I was at work on Friday, Steve took the day off and went to the U.S. Bank Championship PGA Golf Tournament in Milwaukee with his dad. Saturday and Sunday I went to two different Inspired Aroma Coffee and Tea parties hosted by my friends Lisa and Kathy. I also went to Archivers scrapbook store on Saturday night for Scrap Mania, which is five hours of scrapbooking. You get to work on your own scrapbook projects, you can use their materials, they provide food and drink, and the staff is available to assist if you have questions. It was a lot of fun and I was very productive. Steve stayed home with Bryce for most of Saturday, although he did go out first thing Saturday morning to pick up the last Harry Potter book (he's only on page 85 so he said he doesn't want any spoilers!) Sunday, Steve woke up at 2:30am to do some work for Thrivent, then had a relaxing morning and afternoon with Bryce, followed by an evening softball game and team pizza party at Sammy's Pizza following the game. Steve and Bryce had a lot of daddy/son time since I was at the parties and scrapbooking this weekend.

Bryce Update
Not much is new with Bryce. He was supposed to have his two-year photos taken Saturday, but he decided to be fussy during the session and we were unable to get any pictures. We have it rescheduled for Wednesday evening so we'll see how that goes. Bryce said a few more unprompted new words this week, including "Bike", "TV", "Noddy", "Big Bird", "Piglet", "Diaper", "Snack", "Bee", "Bucky", "Share", "I see Bryce" (when looking into a mirror), "Dada Where are you?", and Steve's personal favorite, said while tucking him in bed on a warm night when he doesn't want any blankets on top of him: "No sheet!" Also lately we've been taking Bryce to the park often and when it's time to leave, Bryce says "Bye Bye" to the slides, swings, and everything else he's leaving behind. I guess you'd have to be there but it's really cute seeing him wave and say "bye bye" to inanimate objects.

The sun was finally out over south and central Texas on Sunday after days of torrential rain left an Amtrak train stranded, flooded roads and sent Boy Scouts on a camping trip fleeing for their lives.
As much as 17 inches of rain fell in some areas between 10 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday, said Pat McDonald, a National Weather Service forecaster. Dozens of people were rescued, some by helicopter, but no serious injuries were reported in the state's latest round of flooding.

Today’s Thoughts: Five Years. Today is our five-year wedding anniversary! Our wedding on July 20, 2002 was the very first wedding at the new First English Lutheran Church (North Site) here in Appleton. It really doesn't seem like it has been that long since we had our friends and family trek up to Appleton for our wedding, but a lot sure has changed since that special day! Five years ago today, we lived in a Menasha apartment with our 1-year-old dog Kozmo and few years old cat Savannah, I had been working at AAL/Thrivent Financial for a year and a half, Lisa was right about to start her new job at HumanaDental (she started the Monday after our wedding!), and it had been exactly 2 1/2 years since our first date (yeah, we planned it out that way ). Weatherwise, it was a partly sunny and very warm day with a high of 86, but it actually hit 99 degrees the day after our wedding, which was the hottest day of the entire year, so the weather for our outdoor pictures could have been much worse had the heat arrived one day earlier! But anyway, it has been a terrific five years, we now have a house in Appleton and a two-year-old son Bryce, and I can't wait to see what happens in the next five years, and beyond. And honey - I love you!

Today’s Thoughts: Potterific. So we are just 2+ days away from the release of the last book in the Harry Potter series. There's certainly a lot of talk and buzz about the book - who lives, who dies, and is a certain character good or evil? I'm excited about the book, even though my reading time has decreased dramatically since Bryce was born (I'm still trying to get through The Da Vinci Code, which I started at least six months ago if not longer!) My biggest concern is that I will overhear spoilers by accident before getting through the book myself. Lisa read Book 6 via audiobook on her drive to/from work, which might not be a bad idea to get through it a lot faster, since I use my iPod Nano all the time for music and podcasts. Then again, I could find out the ending of the book in about 30 minutes since I heard the full text already got leaked out to the Internet [Chicago Tribune Article]. The fifth movie just came out a week ago, which I wasn't very excited about (book five was my least favorite of the six so far), but after hearing very good reviews from some of my Potterhead friends, I'm more likely to see it in the theater at some point (rare for us nowadays!) instead of just waiting for it to come to DVD.

Happy Monday,

Weekend Recap
This is Lisa with our weekend and Bryce update and I hope you all had a nice weekend. Once again we had a busy but fun weekend. Saturday, we went my sister-in-law Katie's baby shower in Oconomowoc as she is expecting a baby girl in September. It's her first child and she's very excited. Sunday, we went to a birthday party for Katelyn, who is our friends John and Shelley's daughter. Lastly, Steve played softball Sunday evening and his team has their first winning streak of the season (two wins in a row).

Bryce Update
Bryce is still as active as usual but he's been much better behaved lately. He's also saying more phrases instead of always just saying single words or grunting and pointing, including "I did that!" whenever he does something like put on his own shoes, draw something using his crayons, markers, or chalk, etc. New single words (said without prompting) include Pooh (as in Winnie the Pooh), Meow, Bite (usually said while mommy and daddy are eating, often used like "A bite, dadda!"), Bagel, Pig, Mouse, and Sure (his first different-sounding synonym? for Yes/Yeah!). He had a very good weekend and he was a very happy and sociable little boy. He's also enjoying playing with all of his new toys and books that he received for his birthday. He has a much larger attention span when it comes to television now, which is good but at the same time we have to be careful not to fall into the trap of letting him watch PBS Sprout too often. Two-year-olds are only supposed to watch up to one hour of television a day. Well that wraps up our update, have a great week.

Today’s Mood: Surprised. Gas prices had been $3.059/gallon for quite a while. It jumped up to $3.099/gallon late last week, and was still that way on Wednesday morning. Driving home, the second number didn't quite look like a "0" in the distance, and as I drove closer to the sign, I realized it was a "3" - prices jumped up 30 cents in one afternoon! Not counting 9/11/01, have you ever seen gas prices jump that much in just one day? I see they dropped back down to $3.299 this morning. Also - what do you think of the new LED gas price signs that are replacing the old manual signs? At the BP station in Menasha on Hwy CB near Hwy 441, I can't even read that small green LED number as I'm driving by, and a few other gas station signs are barely readable too. A part of me wonders if it's like that on purpose.

Today’s Mood: Tired. Why does it take 3 hours to play out a simple Home Run Derby? Monday evening I started watching it, got kind of bored with it after Prince Fielder only got 3 home runs and didn't make the semifinals, turned something else on, then came back to ESPN a couple hours later and it was still going on. Sheesh! And last night's All Star game coverage started at 7pm and the game itself went until just after 11pm. It ended pretty familiarly with the National League losing yet again, as it has for every All Star game since 1996 (besides the goofy tie in Milwaukee in 2002). After that I tuned in to the Microsoft E3 press conference on G4 for a while, then finally went to bed after I realized they weren't going to announce the rumored price cut for the Xbox 360. Bummer.

Heat advisory in effect from noon today to 8 PM EDT this evening...
High temperatures across the area will reach the middle 90s away
from the immediate coast today. These temperatures combined with
dewpoints in the mid 70s are expected to result in heat index
values of around 105 degrees during much of the afternoon and
early evening hours today.

Closer to the shore... high temperatures will be in the 88 to
92 degree range while dewpoints will be in the upper 70s to
around 80 by the time the seabreeze develops. This combination
will also produce heat index values around 105 degrees for a
couple of hours this afternoon.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink enough water to remain hydrated... stay in an air-
conditioned room... stay out of the sun... and check up on the very
Young... those that have illnesses and the elderly. If working or
participating in recreational activities outdoors... wear light-
weight clothing and wear a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself
from the sun.

Pets can also succumb to the effects of excessive heat. Ensure
pets have adequate fresh drinking water and a shady place to
rest. Do not keep pets in cars with the windows rolled up... even
partially. Temperatures inside cars can reach well over
150 degrees.

Wisconsin Weather Update for July 9, 2007.

Happy Monday,
This is Lisa with our weekend and Bryce update, and I hope you all enjoyed the weekend. We had a busy and enjoyable weekend with family and friends as we wrapped up celebrating Bryce's 2-year birthday with a pool party on Saturday. Steve grilled out a lot of yummy food and despite the heat, most people spent the afternoon outside under the patio umbrella or under our friends' Jason and Nicole's new canopy. Bryce didn't want to take a nap so he was fussy in the afternoon, but he enjoyed his cake and presents, which included a Radio Flyer wagon, sandbox, a toy grill, a bubble mower, lots of books, and a small inflatable ball pit. He didn't seem to want to go in the pool too much though, despite the heat. However, his friends Logan and Katelyn had fun splashing in the pools. Bryce was in a better mood after his late afternoon nap, and had fun helping his daddy play croquet in the backyard.

Sunday was a busy day around the house of catching up on chores and running errands, playing LEGO Star Wars on the Playstation 2 (Bryce likes watching us play video games and even knows how to turn on and start playing our Nintendo DS), and Steve played a softball doubleheader in the evening (won one, lost one).

Bryce said a few more phrases this weekend, including "Where are you Dada?" when looking for Steve, and after Steve and Bryce both started reaching for one of his shoes under the table, he said "I got it Dada" and grabbed it. The "where are you dada" sometimes also sounds like "I love you Dada or I love you Mama." He's also learning to understand the reward system where he knows that if he does something he'll get something in return. It's also now easier to talk to him as if he's a child rather than a baby. We can ask him questions and usually he'll give us an answer based on the question we asked. Bryce will now pose and say "cheese!!!" when you're taking a picture of him, although while saying cheese, he will shut his eyes as tightly as he can, so you have to wait for him to think you've already taken the picture before he'll open his eyes and then you can snap the pic. Bryce locked himself in his room for the first time last week, but before we could grab something to put in the small hole in the center of the lock to open it, he opened it by himself and hasn't done it since. He also had his two-year well child check up and his doctor said he's healthy and developing well. That wraps up our update, have a great week.

Synopsis: We had a hot weekend with most places in Wisconsin getting close to 90 on Saturday and many places hitting the low to mid- 90s yesterday. This morning a cold front is moving through southern Wisconsin generating what is now only a thin line of storms in central Wisconsin, but northern Wisconsin had quite a few Severe Thunderstorm Warnings yesterday evening. Look for cooler air to begin filtering into the state behind today's cold front and another chance of storms tomorrow (and even cooler weather by Wednesday).

Today’s Mood: Topical. With this four-day break between updates, I have blog topics coming out my ears, so I'll just touch on a few and save the rest for next week. We're just a few days away from next week's E3 expo, which is always fast-paced with tons of electronics breaking news. The Brewers have had a recent slide (they're still in first place but only by 4.5 games now since the Cubs keep winning) but it'll be neat to see four Brewers in the All-Star game and Prince Fielder in the Home Run Derby on Monday. We're just a couple weeks away from the start of Packers training camp, and with that goes all other topics from our local sports talk radio stations. And finally for now, last night was the season premiere of Big Brother 8 (yeah I know, it's a guilty pleasure, but I'm hooked again this season ). The cast looks young and wacky like usual, but I like the thought of one player being designated "America's Player" and will do whatever the public votes him to do in each episode.

Synopsis: Rain may have postponed some fireworks shows (although the one in Appleton unfortunately still went as scheduled Tuesday night even though it rained from 6:30-9:15pm, causing us to miss it), but now we will have a different weather phenomena to worry about: heat, and lots of it. High pressure currently in the Dakotas will gradually move east, and as it passes us, our winds will shift to be from the southwest, bringing in a large pocket of hot air which is already baking much of the western United States.

An excessive heat warning remains in effect across the Mojave
Desert for elevations below 4000 feet until 9 PM PDT /9 PM MST/
this evening. This includes the Las Vegas Valley.

Another day of hot temperatures are expected once again today.
Record to near record heat is expected due to a strong area of
high pressure over southern Nevada. High temperatures today are
expected to be 113 to 116 in Las Vegas... Barstow... and the
morongo basin... 114 to 118 along the Colorado River valley
including Lake Mead and Lake Mohave... 114 to 116 in the Mesquite
area... 105 to 110 in Kingman... Pahrump and Primm... 120 to 124 in
Death Valley... and 119 to 123 in Baker.

An excessive heat warning is issued when temperatures are
forecast to reach dangerous levels that will stress the body if
precautions are not taken.

Residents and especially tourists who are not acclimated to the
desert heat are urged to plan outdoor activities during the early
morning and late evening hours. Stay out of the sunshine and in
an air-conditioned room if possible during the afternoon hours.

If you must be outdoors... drink plenty of water even if you are
not thirsty. Dehydration and heat stroke can occur quickly in
these extreme temperatures.

Check on elderly relatives and neighbors. And never leave
children or pets in the car unattended.

... Record highs broken or tied across the Las Vegas forecast area
today... ...

The high temperature at McCarran International Airport here in Las
Vegas this afternoon reached 116 degrees. This reading tied the
record high for the date last set in 1985. The 116 degree record
today was one degree shy of the all time record high for Las Vegas
which was 117 degrees first set on July 24 1942... and then again on
July 19 2005.

Elsewhere... desert rock Nevada broke their daily record high of 104
degrees set in 2003 with a high of 112 degrees.

In California... Bishop had a high of 108 degrees breaking the old
record of 106 degrees set in 1985. Daggett Airport reached a high of
118 degrees breaking the previous record of 113 degrees set in 1991.

This Weekend in League City and Pearland, Texas: More rain today, then just isolated storms this weekend, highs upper 80s to near 90.
Flash Flood Watch in effect through this afternoon...
a surface and upper level low pressure system is located between
Madisonville and Dallas early this morning. A weak upper level
disturbance will also be moving across the region from the
southwest this afternoon. This combined with the seabreeze and
deep tropical moisture already in place will support thunderstorm
activity with a heavy rainfall potential through this afternoon.

Precipitation will likely be more widespread across areas closer
to the low pressure areas... generally along and north of a line
from Columbus to Livingston. Expect rainfall accumulations to
average around 1 inch across those areas. There is some concern
of training cells across the same area. Where training heavy
rains do occur... localized 4 inch amounts are possible.

Further south... expect scattered to numerous storms to develop
with daytime heating and the approach of the upper level
disturbance from the southwest. The seabreeze will also be a
focus for thunderstorm generation. Expect 1/2 inch rainfall
accumulations south of the Columbus to Livingston line with
localized 2 to 4 inch amounts possible where any training heavy
cells occur. Locations closer to the coast have seen the most
rainfall as of late and the grounds are saturated. Any heavy
rainfall will quickly runoff to produce flash flooding.

* A Flash Flood Watch means rapidly rising water or flooding is
possible within the watch area. If you are in the watch area... check
preparedness requirements... keep informed... and be ready for
quick action if flash flooding is observed or if a warning is
issued.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to
cross safely. Vehicles caught in rising water should be abandoned
quickly. If your vehicle stalls... abandon it and seek higher
ground immediately. Rapidly rising water may engulf your vehicle
and its occupants and sweep them away. Move to higher ground.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize
the dangers of floods and flash floods. If flash flooding is
observed... act quickly. Move up to escape flood waters. Do not
stay in areas subject to flooding when water begins rising.

Listen to NOAA Weather Radio or your local media for the later
updates on this situation.

Through 930 am...showers and thunderstorms and thunderstorms will continue developing along the coastline and Galveston Bay. Movement will be east northeast at 15 mph. Rainfall rates will average 1/4 to 1/2 inch per hour in the showers and up to 1.5 inches per hour in the storms. Due to the training nature of the cells...localized 1 to 2 inch accumulations are possible. The ground is saturated...so any heavy rain that does fall will quickly runoff an cause ponding on streets and other low lying areas. Mariners should expect winds and seas to be higher in and near any storms.

Wisconsin Weather Update for July 2, 2007.

Happy Monday,
This is Lisa with our weekend and Bryce update and I hope you all enjoyed your weekend. We had a busy and fun weekend spent with family. On Saturday we travelled to Waukesha for Steve's brother-in-law Kyle's graduation party from UW-Madison. There was lots of tasty food, games, and even an inflatable moonwalk which Bryce was initially scared of, but eventually liked going into for short periods of time. Then on Sunday we had an early birthday party for Bryce at Funset Boulevard (a food/fun place where we ate some tasty pizza, played arcade games, rode the carousel, and Bryce played in their new toddler area for a while). Bryce was a little scared of the carousel at first, but after a minute or so he was smiling and enjoying himself. We followed this with presents and cake at my mom's house. Bryce will be two years old tomorrow, and I can't believe how fast the time has gone by and how much Bryce has grown. He's learned a few new words this week, including "cookie", "sit" (said while patting a chair, requesting one of us to sit down in that spot), and "help me daddy", and last week at daycare he said "teacher", and "Cole" (one of his classmates). Well that wraps up our update, have a great week.

Still shrouded in mystery, these "night-shining clouds" were photographed illuminating the sky over Budapest, Hungary, on June 15.
