Today’s Mood: Yi? So great - the Milwaukee Bucks drafted 7' Chinese power forward Yi Jianlian with their 6th pick in the NBA draft last night. And in a completely expected turn, he doesn't want to play for Milwaukee, he won't come into town today for media day, and the team will probably be looking to trade him elsewhere before the week is done. Will Bucks fans have 82 more games of losing basketball to look forward to next season, will Yi have a change of heart and actually cooperate with his drafted team, hopefully making them better, or will we get someone good for him that could help the team get back to .500 basketball?

Today’s Mood: Excited/Hungry. Every year full time employees at Thrivent Financial get to choose from one of several Employee Appreciation Events, where you take most of the day off and do something fun and Thrivent pays for it. Some people choose golf outings, comedy clubs, lake cruises, theater tickets, etc., but for the third year in a row, I chose the Ferris Bueller option and will be taking the bus trip to Miller Park to watch the Milwaukee Brewers play. And today is that day - at 9:30am I'll be headed down to Milwaukee with several hundred other employees to hopefully watch the Brewers sweep the Houston Astros. Thrivent Financial rents out the entire Dew Deck in right field and gives everyone a tasty buffet lunch and a couple free beers. In fact, my (almost) hunger strike started at 1:45pm yesterday. My goal today is to eat for the cycle - hamburger, hot dog, brat and chicken - and I had no breakfast this morning and only a bowl of cereal and a yogurt cup for dinner last night in preparation for this Kobayashi-ish task.

Synopsis: Yesterday was a hot one with most areas hitting the 90-degree mark. As for today, a cold front is moving through north-central and west-central Wisconsin this morning, explaining the temperature and dew point difference between northern and central/southern Wisconsin. As this thing moves through, clouds and maybe an isolated thundershower might develop, but otherwise look for partly cloudy and much less humid air to filter through the state after the front passes. Dry and pleasantly cooler weather should remain through the rest of this work week and into this weekend.

Wisconsin Weather Update for June 25, 2007.

Happy Monday!
This is Lisa with our weekend update and I hope you all enjoyed your weekend. My weekend was quite busy while Steve spent some quality time at home with Bryce. I spent Thursday night, Friday afternoon and Saturday at Country USA 2007 in Oshkosh. I had a great time seeing some of my favorite country artists in concert including Emerson Drive, Carrie Underwood and Joe Nichols. I also enjoyed Friday afternoon watching my favorite local band Led West as well as being able to visit with some friends. I also had the wonderful opportunity to get a meet-n-greet pass to meet Emerson Drive. I won the pass from my favorite country radio station Y100. I was given 2 passes so I was able to take my mom with me. I am usually not very lucky when it comes to winning prizes, but this was one prize that I was extremely excited to get. They were so nice and personable and they love their fans. I spent Friday night and Sunday at home with my family. Well that wraps up our family weekend update, and I hope you have a great week.

As Bryce will be turning two in just eight days, we may start altering how we include him in our weekly intro. Instead of what new things he can do, perhaps just a funny story or two might be appropriate. This weekend, I (Steve) decided to get a current vocabulary list and wrote down every word or phrase he said unprompted. There's about 40 words here total, but he'll say a lot more if you say them first (like when reading him a book). In somewhat no particular order:
Me, Mine, Help, Help me, Help me daa, Yeah, No, Nope, Mommy, Daddy, Doggie, Nii nee (kitty), Hi, Buh bye, Uppie, Oh no!, Uh oh!, Bryce, Book, My book, Hot, But (button), Joo (juice), Light, Big, Elmo, Scooby Doo, Narney (Barney), Head, Mouff (mouth), Teeff (teeth), Knee, Apple, Ball, Beep beep, Cheese, Baby, Bear, Hush, Bite, Mammy (grandma), Ucky (yucky), Stoe (shoe). Lisa also thinks he said "I want my bear" before naptime on Saturday, which oddly enough was referring to his new doggie stuffed animal he got last week (and the first toy that he now routinely cuddles with at night).


The Summer 2007 Season Begins Today!
The scores are wiped clean and a brand new, slightly more casual season starts today! There are three rule changes for the summer season - one you are already aware of, one which will only affect one of you, and a third which is a big change from previous seasons and was inspired by the NCAA Basketball Tournament and the Conference Tournaments leading up to the Selection Show. I'll let you decide which is which.

1. Four games will be rotated this season instead of the usual eight. These four games are Family Feud, Mad Gab, Chain Reaction and TriBond, and were chosen by you, the players.

2. I will be implementing a new rule this season which will affect double-point week and the regular season final point standings. The top ten will become the top nine, and that tenth slot will be filled in by the person (not in the top nine) who gets the most points during double point week. In the event of a tie, whoever had more points up to that point will get the automatic bid into the big dance. So if you played horribly that season (or even if you barely played at all), then do really well in that last week, you could crash the party and still get into the playoffs. This rule change will make everyone still eligible to make the playoffs and perhaps even win the championship on the last week of the regular season.

3. The Summer 2007 maximum (weather-related) prize budget for the winner will temporarily drop from $30 to $10. The winner is always welcome to use this subsidy to purchase a more expensive item (such as a weather radio). Up to $100 in weather-related prizes are given away each year!

Anthony Watts of Chico, Calif., suspects NOAA temperature readings are not all they're cracked up to be. As the former TV meteorologist explains on his sophisticated, newly hatched Web site surfacestations.org, he has set out to do what big-time armchair-climate modelers like Hansen and no one else has ever done - physically quality-check each weather station to see if it's being operated properly.

Today’s Mood: Recuperating. Besides a summer trip or two, I don't really take a lot of vacation time during the year. In fact, in the 6+ years I've been at Thrivent Financial, I have yet to use up my yearly PTO allowance (but it gets banked so I don't lose any of it). And now that things are getting back to normal after our trip to Nashville, I am remembering why I don't take a lot of vacation time. There's a lot to do when you get back! The work email in-box is many pages thick of stuff to do, and at home you're out of groceries, the grass has to be mowed, bills have to get paid, and most importantly of all, the TiVo DVR box is full of shows taped while you were away (well ok, not so much during the summer when most shows are reruns).

Synopsis: The Summer Solstice officially began at 1:06pm yesterday, making today the first full day of summer and each day for the next six months will be just a little bit shorter. Wednesday evening northern and central Wisconsin had storms roll through with some hail and wind damage, and these storms generated a few Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in southern Wisconsin yesterday. As for today, high pressure to our north will keep northern Wisconsin sunny and dry, but that nearly stationary low pressure system still centrally located just east of St. Louis will bring more scattered thunderstorms to southern Wisconsin and Illinois. Iowa and southern Illinois are under the slight risk category for severe weather but the storms are not expected to be severe in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

At 700 am...scattered showers and thunderstorms continue to affect portions of southeast Illinois...southwest Indiana and west Kentucky. The activity was east of Interstate 57 in Illinois and east of Interstate 24 in west Kentucky. Showers and storms will continue to slide southeast into the region from central Illinois. However... other storms are now developing across the area as well. Some of the stronger storms will be accompanied by heavy downpours...with hourly rainfall rates of an inch or more...gusty winds to 30 mph and frequent lightning.

A series of tornadoes ripped through the Upper Midwest region of the United States in the evening of June 7, 2007. At least five different tornadoes touched down in Wisconsin, according to the Associated Press, one of which tore through the Bear Paw Resort in northern Wisconsin. Despite dropping as much as fifteen centimeters (six inches) of rain in some places and baseball-size hail in others, authorities were reporting no deaths attributable to the storm system, and only a smattering of injuries, but considerable property damage in some areas.

Wisconsin Weather Update for June 20, 2007.

Good Wednesday morning!
This is Steve with the extended weekend update and hopefully all of you are having a good work week so far. We spent the last four days in sunny and very hot Nashville! The main reason for going to Nashville Friday morning was my friends Chad and Jessica's wedding. I was a groomsman for the Jewish outdoor wedding on Sunday, which was really neat to be a part of. It was very hot in the black tux though (it hit 95 degrees on Sunday!) Many of my college friends also made the trip so it was great seeing all of them again.

As long as we were already there, we spent an extra couple days just checking out the sites, such as Lower Broadway (where all the best country bars are), the Country Music Hall of Fame, Studio B, Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, and the Opry Mills Mall, Gaylord Opryland Resort, and the Grand Ole Opry Museum. But as great as the trip was, we're also glad to be home with Bryce again, who spent the extended weekend with his Grandma John (Nia, Lisa's mom).


Spring 2007 Playoff Final Point Standings
In the closest finish in Weather Update game history, we have a four-way tie for first place! While it is tempting to have a four-way playoff for the championship, the rules stated at the beginning of the season that in the event of a tie, whoever has the most points in the regular season wins it all. So by four regular season points, rookie Brian F. has won the Spring 2007 Season!

Just how close was this thing? If Becky and her dad would have answered "A" for Rather game #2 on Thursday, they would have won. If Angie would have said Bride or Groom for Outburst on Wednesday, she would have won. If Katie/Bart score just ONE more point in the regular season, they would have won. What an excellent day of weather across Wisconsin! High pressure and cooler air behind a cold front gave us sunshine and pleasant temperatures in the 70s. Another cold front may give us a stray thundershower late tomorrow or Thursday.

Hot Day in Wisconsin, and Game Results Coming Tuesday

Wisconsin enjoyed yet another day of warm, dry weather with most high temperatures reaching the mid- to upper 80s and Lacrosse even hit 92!


Games Update
Well, only 6 of 11 people are in and I'm turning off the computer shortly, so you all have until Tuesday afternoon to get in your answers, when I'll announce the final results here on my online blog.

In a way, it's kind of like Survivor, where they tape the series, the final votes are in, but instead of tallying the results and finding out who won right away, they all have to fly home and wait six months for the series to air, then they count the votes live in the season finale. :) If only a million dollars instead of a weather radio were at stake in my weather updates!

Today was another great day of weather across Wisconsin, and as long as you don't mind a dirty airmass hanging around for another 24 hours, more sunshine, warm temperatures but only moderate air quality are on tap for tomorrow.

Today’s Mood: Oy! Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for the Milwaukee Brewers, they end up getting no-hit last night by the Detroit Tigers. At least the injury bug hasn't hit them badly yet, but I don't want to give them any ideas. And is anyone watching the snoozefest otherwise known as the NBA Finals? At least last night's game was close, but boy the Spurs are really good at making the Cleveland Cavs look like they don't quite belong there yet. Maybe in another year or two...

Wisconsin Weather Update for June 11, 2007.

Happy Monday,
This is Lisa with our weekend and baby update, and I hope you all had a great weekend. Our weekend was busy but enjoyable and special. Friday evening, Steve and I went on a disc golfing date while Bryce visited with his Grandma Nia. This was the first time this year that we've been disc golfing, and it was a lot of fun and nice to spend some time together just the two of us.

Saturday, we walked in the Bellin Run 2007 which is a 10K Run/Walk in Green Bay. We both beat our times from 2006 and 2004 so we were quite proud of our accomplishments. Steve finished in 1:18 and I finished in 1:36. Steve thinks he might even feel confident enough to attempt running (instead of walking/jogging) the Bellin Run next year.

Sunday was a another busy but also a very special day. We went to the Baptism for Grant Henry Schubring, son of our friends Jason and Nicole, and Steve's Godson. Steve also worked very hard on Sunday afternoon assembling Bryce's "big boy" bed frame. He wouldn't sleep in it last night because it was still too new, but it looks very nice and makes Bryce's room look like a "big boy" room (especially when we take out the crib in another week or two). Well that wraps up our weekend, have a great week.

Speaking of Bryce, he has a new favorite book. I think we burned him out on Snuggle Puppy because he only likes us reading that to him every once in a while, but now his favorite book seems to be Goodnight Moon which we have to read every night. He's getting out more words like he should be since he's almost two years old, and like most toddlers you need a special dictionary to translate some of his words to English. Examples: me-o = please, nee = kitty and jew = juice. He does say "Help me" pretty clearly now though, along with parts of the body like "head", "nose", "mouff", and "knee." Lisa heard him say "bed" the other day, and Grandma Nia said he kind-of said "I love you."


Spring 2007 Playoffs!
Here are the rules and they are slightly different than usual so pay attention.

--There will be games Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
--Games will be ONLINE ONLY on Tuesday and Thursday, and there will be no weather update on Friday as we'll be out of town, so you will have to check the Web site [www.wisconsinweatherupdate.com] to get the games on Tuesday and Thursday. The next day's games might even get posted tonight and/or Wednesday night if everyone gets in their answers right away. You can email me your answers or click the "Play the Games / Feedback" link on the right side of my Web page. If you can't get to my Web site for some reason, please let me know and I'll be happy to tell you what the games are.
--You only have one day to get in your answers, so please have them submitted by 6am the following morning at the latest. I'm occasionally flexible during the regular season, but it's a no-tolerance policy during the playoffs. Hey, this is for a nice prize.
--In previous seasons I only played one game per day. This time around each game's getting played once, which means twice the points are up for grabs and the standings will hopefully shuffle around a bit more than in past playoff weeks.
--If everyone gets in their answers to Thursday's game by early evening, I will post the final results online Thursday night. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until next week Wednesday to find out who won (no update next Monday either.)
--Lastly, even if you didn't make the playoffs, you're always welcome to submit answers, and I will include them with that day's answers. This is especially useful for games like Family Feud, Match Game, Rather, etc., which are best if a lot of people play.

Today’s Mood: Relieved. For 3-5 days a year, I seem to be one of the most popular people at work with everyone wanting to know what's going on with the upcoming storms. While I didn't write a weather update yesterday, my online weather blog was still hoping with good discussion as things progressed. Look for more info about yesterday's storms below. But I thought for sure I'd be on like two hours of sleep yesterday - on Wednesday, I had about three cups of coffee, a Diet Mountain Dew, a McDonald's shake as part of dinner, we watched the last two hours of 24: Season 6 right before bed and there was a forecast for an extremely severe weather outbreak the next day. I was shocked that I actually fell asleep almost right away and got a good night's sleep. And I'm relieved that those storms mostly stayed to our north, although I did get a few good wall cloud pictures that I'll post online this weekend.

Synopsis: After a wild day of weather with almost 30 Tornado Warnings issued non-stop from 11:30am until after 7pm, five actual tornadoes that caused some major damage, hail sizes larger than baseballs and wind damage throughout the state, cooler air behind that strong cold front should keep our weather relatively stable through the weekend. Moisture behind the front may give us a passing shower this morning but look for a clearing sky and winds to eventually settle down.

High Risk of Severe Weather

The Storm Prediction Center has put almost all of Wisconsin in the very rare HIGH RISK category for severe weather, including a 15% of a tornado forming within 25 miles of any point, and at least a 10% chance of an EF2 or larger tornado forming within 25 miles of any point. I want to start a weather pool around the office today where you sign up for when you think the first tornado watch and warnings will be posted within Wisconsin. :) Occasionally these big severe weather outbreak forecasts are a bust, usually due to a strong inversion layer a mile or so up in the air that the vertical lifting at the surface just can't get past to take advantage of the extremely strong instability in the mid-levels of the atmosphere, but more than likely this thing will be real and some big damage could take place in the state today. If you live in Wisconsin and are reading this, you might just want to go to your basement stairwell, bring a book, and don't leave until tomorrow morning. :)

Today’s Mood: Undecided. Now that we've had an HDTV for over a year, I have been wanting to get one of the two HD video game systems to really take advantage of it. The choices are Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 (the Nintendo Wii is not HD). The Xbox 360, which has been available a year longer, seems to have a lot of good games for it and a bunch more available on their online marketplace, whereas the PS3 is still in its infancy with most of its good games still a year or more away from release. The X360 has a smaller price tag compared to the $600 PS3, although the PS3 has a blue-ray high-def DVD player included instead of having to pay for a $200 accessory for the X360 to play HD-DVD movies. And every time I'm just about ready to get one with project reward gift certificates from work I've been saving, I remind myself that I still have a few games I haven't beaten on my Playstation 2, Nintendo DS and my still-fairly-new Wii, and since I've waited this long already, price cuts for one or both might be coming by Christmas if I wait it out another few months. If any of you have either of these systems, I'd like to get your take on what I should do. One thing I don't want to hear is "what are you doing playing video games at all, you have a toddler at home!"

Synopsis: The next two days promise to be very interesting weatherwise. After a cooler last couple of days, a warm front to our south is going to move through, generating some scattered thunderstorms late in the day along with warmer temperatures. Tomorrow, things will get really warm but a strong trailing cold front will give Wisconsin a very good chance of severe weather with large hail, strong winds, and maybe even a tornado or two, so keep an eye to the sky tomorrow afternoon and evening. Wisconsin Weather Update for June 4, 2007.

Good Monday morning,
This is Lisa with our weekend and baby update and I hope you all had a great weekend. Friday night, Steve and Bryce had a daddy/son night while I worked on Bryce's birth-1 year scrapbook with my friend Lisa S. It is now finally completed and it feels really good to have it done. Saturday, we walked in the "Bark in the Park" walk with Kozmo to raise money for the Fox Valley Humane Association. It was a fun and easy 2-mile walk on the Thrivent Financial grounds, and most of the heavy rain waited until after the walk before coming down. Sunday we had a very busy day. We went to Hartford to visit our friends Chris and Allison to see their new baby Andrew William and their new house. Then we went to visit my mother-in-law and family and made a trip to the Oconomowoc YMCA. We then went to my stepbrother-in-law Andy's high school graduation party in Genesee. Well that wraps up our weekend.

Baby Update:
Bryce turned 23 months old yesterday. It's hard to believe that he's almost 2 years old. The time has gone so fast. Not too much is new as we are still working on getting him to sleep in his big boy bed, which he still goes back and forth between the bed and crib. He does it by himself though, so he chooses where he sleeps. In a couple weeks though, we will be removing the crib so he'll have no choice but to sleep in the bed. Also, this weekend he learned to put his sandals on by himself. Steve and I have both noticed that he would be wearing his sandals and we didn't put them on him. They aren't quite his tennis shoes but it's a good start. Well that's all for our personal update. Have a great week.

After receiving a record 3 inches of rain on Sunday... saturated
ground will not be able to handle additional rainfall. A pocket of
moderate to at times heavy showers will be moving through Dane
County between 530 am and 10 am.
This pocket of showers will bring one half to three quarters of an
inch of rain. The runoff from these showers may cover area
roadways with water... and fill underpasses and low-lying areas
with water.
Be alert for rapidly changing Road conditions as these showers and
isolated thunderstorms move through.

Synopsis: Today is the official start to hurricane season and the Meteorological first day of summer (although astronomically the Summer Solstice isn't until June 21). Around Wisconsin, it's going to feel very similar to how it's been over the last few days - clouds and isolated thundershowers. Look for a better chance of storms tonight and through the weekend courtesy of that very slow-moving surface low pressure system in the Plains, but nothing is expected to reach severe levels.
