Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 29, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 2:08 PM GMT on December 29, 2006

TGIF!

Usually Friday's Weather Update takes me about 1 1/2 hours to write, because in addition to the extended forecast and news articles, I'm calculating the results from Thursday's game as well as adding up all the individual points from Tuesday's and Thursday's games. During this break, it'll instead take me 45 minutes to write today's blog entry, and that's only because the forecast is a little challenging.

Today’s forecast grade: B-

NowCast: (Courtesy of the National Weather Service)
Northern Wisconsin:
Look for patchy freezing drizzle and fog to continue through the early morning hours over central and north central Wisconsin. The lowest visibilities can be found in the area stretching from Rhinelander to Antigo. Motorists in these locations are urged to exercise caution...as untreated roads may be very slippery. Look for the drizzle to change to snow this morning.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=GRB

Wisconsin Forecast:
Now: At 7am with areas of fog across the state and scattered light freezing drizzle or snow showers north, temps are near 30 north, in the low to mid- 30s central, and mid- to upper 30s south.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html
http://www.pollen.com/state.asp?id=wi

Synopsis: The last weather update of 2006 will have quite the interesting forecast, although it'd be more interesting if all the precip we get over the next three days would fall as snow and not rain, like it's supposed to in late December. A slow-moving low pressure system is strengthening in the southern Rocky Mountains and near the panhandle, creating more travel havoc for folks in Denver. Abundant moisture spreading north and east from this system should keep clouds and scattered (mostly rain) showers in the area through the rest of the year. Happy New Year everyone!
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Cloudy with areas of fog. Scattered light snow showers or freezing drizzle north, occasional light rain or snow showers central, and maybe some drizzle south. High of 37 central, mid- 30s north, and near 40 south. Chance of precip north 40%, central 25%, south 15%.

Tonight: Clouds with more areas of fog or occasional freezing drizzle. Lows near or just above 30.

Tomorrow: Cloudy and becoming breezy with a chance of rain showers southwest, mostly late in the day. A chance of rain across the state tomorrow night. Highs upper 30s to near 40 central, low to mid- 40s south. Chance of rain Saturday night 70% south, 40% central, 20% north.

Extended:
Sunday: Breezy with rain showers likely, changing over to light snow around early 2007. Highs 38-43. Chance of precip 80%. Go Pack Go!
New Year's Day: Cloudy and breezy with morning light snow becoming just occasional flurries. Highs 36-41. Chance of snow 30%. Go Badgers!
Tuesday: Cloudy, breezy, maybe some flurries. Highs 33-38. Chance of work 99.5%.
Wednesday: Partly cloudy, highs 36-41.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Sunshine through the new year, highs mid- to upper 50s.

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 28, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 1:44 PM GMT on December 28, 2006

Good Thursday morning!

Today’s forecast grade: B-

NowCast: (Courtesy of the National Weather Service)
Northern Wisconsin:
A band of snow will drift slowly northward over northcentral and northeast Wisconsin this morning. Between 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation will be possible north of line from Wausau to Sturgeon Bay...and south of line form Minocqua to Wausaukee. Motorists should drive with caution this morning and allow extra driving distance.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=GRB

Fox Cities:
A band of snow will drift slowly northward over east central Wisconsin this morning. Up to an inch of snow accumulation is expected. A little more snow accumulation is anticipated over northern Wisconsin. Motorists should drive with caution this morning and allow extra driving distance.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=GRB

Southern Wisconsin:
Look for a broken band of light precipitation to exit northeast Sheboygan County between 745 am and 8 am. Though the precipitation is mainly drizzle and light rain...flurries and even some very light sleet may mix in at times...making Road conditions slippery in spots. Motorists are urged to remain alert to the potential for isolated slippery spots during the early morning commute. The remainder of southeast and south central Wisconsin will see mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the middle 30s through the early morning hours.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=MKX&StateCode=WI&SafeCityName=Madison

Wisconsin Forecast:
Now: At 7am with clouds and scattered thick but lightly scattered snow showers across central and parts of northern Wisconsin and some partial clearing far southwest, temps are in the low to mid- 30s.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html
http://www.pollen.com/state.asp?id=wi

Synopsis: This morning's surface map is pretty much a mess. A stationary front over northern Wisconsin is developing the snow showers we're seeing across much of central and parts of northern Wisconsin this morning. However, the big story is a developing low pressure system in the southern Rocky Mountains. This thing's going to rev up and create more havoc for the Denver Airport before eventually winding up here, where rain and some snow can be expected at times this weekend.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Scattered light snow showers, mostly north and central and mostly early in the day. 1" can be expected on grassy areas central with 1-2" possible north. Probably just mostly cloudy south. High of 38 central, mid- 30s north, and lower 40s south. Chance of snow 40% north, 100% central (it's already snowing here).

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, lows near 30.

Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy, mild and a little breezy with light rain showers or drizzle possible. Highs near 40 central, low to mid- 40s south. Chance of rain 40% central, 25% south.

This Weekend:
Saturday: Mostly cloudy and breezy with rain developing Saturday night southwest. Highs 40-45. Chance of rain Saturday night 40% south, 20% central.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy and windy with scattered rain showers changing over to light snow late. Highs 36-41. Chance of precip 60%.
New Year's Day: Mostly cloudy, breezy, a little colder, scattered light snow showers possible. Highs 32-37. Chance of snow 50%.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Increasing sunshine; windy, highs mid- 50s.
Wind Advisory in effect until 8 PM PST this evening...
Strong north winds had developed across much of southeast
California early this morning and are expected to spread across
southern Nevada and down the Colorado River this morning.
Northerly winds sustained at 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph are
expected to persist throughout the day before tapering off later
this evening.

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 27, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 1:53 PM GMT on December 27, 2006

Good Wednesday morning!

For the next week, I'll be going back to my roots, focusing on the forecast, which originally was all that was in my daily blog. And with a very challenging forecast coming up, full of rain, sleet and snow, it's just as well. A new season of games will return on Thursday, January 4th, with a new game (similar to an already-existing game) replacing a controversial one.

Today’s forecast grade: B

Wisconsin Forecast:
Now: At 7am with clouds across the state and scattered light snow showers southwest, temps are in the teens north, mid- 20s central and upper 20s south.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html
http://www.pollen.com/state.asp?id=wi

Synopsis: Did any of you have to keep reminding yourselves yesterday that it was already Tuesday, and not Monday? That was me yesterday, and I'll probably feel the same way next week Tuesday. As for the weather, all is for the most part quiet for now, with just a few light snow showers southwest. However, a developing low pressure system currently near the panhandle of Oklahoma is getting ready to create a mess across the Midwest starting late tomorrow and continuing right through the weekend. Warm air advection from the southwest should keep temperatures above normal for the next few days, though.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Mostly cloudy, maybe a few light snow showers, drizzle or flurries south. High of 38 north and central, lower 40s south. Chance of precip 20%.

Tonight: Cloudy, scattered light snow showers possible, maybe mixing with sleet central and rain south. Lows upper 20s to near 30. Chance of precip 50% central, 30% north and south.

Tomorrow: Cloudy, maybe some light snow north. Light rain or snow developing late west. Highs near 40 central, lower 40s south. Chance of precip 25%.

This Weekend:
Friday: Cloudy and breezy with scattered light rain showers possible. Highs 40-45. Chance of rain 40%.
Saturday: Windy with rain likely. Highs 41-46. Chance of rain 75%.
New Year's Eve: Windy and colder with rain turning to snow. What a way to end 2006. Highs 32-37. Chance of precip 60%.
New Year's Day: Scattered light snow showers, mostly early in the day. Highs 33-38. Chance of snow 40%.

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 26, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 2:13 PM GMT on December 26, 2006

Good Tuesday morning!

This is Steve with the intro this morning, and I hope all of you had a very memorable holiday weekend. Like many families, we took a lot of road trips over Christmas, including Saturday to my grandma and grandpa's house in Milwaukee and my dad and step-mom Linda's house in Genesee, then my mother-in-law Nia and step-father-in-law Karl's house here in Appleton on Sunday, then to Oconomowoc yesterday to go to my mom and step-dad Bob's house. Lots of fun was had and nice gifts were exchanged, and Bryce took home enough new toys to keep him occupied for minutes! His favorite toys were probably the several toy cell phones he received (finally he can stop playing with my real cell phone!) and a variety of bouncy balls (otherwise known as ammo). During our visits, I carted along our Nintendo Wii, and it was a big hit wherever we went. Everyone seemed to really get into it, swinging the remote control like a baseball, tennis racquet, golf club, bowling ball, or boxing, and it was responsible for us leaving later than anticipated on multiple occasions. But after three days of driving, chatting, swinging Wii-motes and eating lots of ham, things finally go back to normal today, but at least it's only a four-day work week!

Congratulations to Greg from Madison, who finally made the playoffs for the first time, and ended up metaphorically walking out of here with a championship! Synopsis: A strong area of low pressure to our east is responsible for the clouds across most of Wisconsin this morning. There is some clearing to the southwest though, which should slowly move our way and hopefully give us a little taste of sunshine before it sets.

... Isolated slick spots on area roads...

Colder air has begun to move into the region this morning.
Moisture from previous rains may linger on some of the area
roads. As temperatures drop below freezing in some areas... isolated
slick spots may be present this morning... especially on bridges and
overpasses.

There may be some light rain or flurries over southwest Indiana and
parts of western Kentucky... east of the lakes area this morning.
No accumulations are expected... but the precipitation may
produce enough moisture on the roads to create slick spots... again...

We had just under 1" of sleet overnight, which was about what the NWS was calling for last night. The snow plow came through at 7am and woke us up, but there's barely any snow to plow. Oh well, we needed to get up anyway.

Game Results

By: HaleStorm, 1:15 AM GMT on December 23, 2006

As of 7pm on Friday, Greg from Madison is the unofficial winner of my game, winning in a tie-breaker over Becky T. However, two of the games are too-close-to-call so I'm not posting the answers quite yet, as two votes could swing the whole thing around.

And to make this blog post weather-related, the rain we had all day long turned to slush around 4-5pm in Appleton, making the roads a little slick but not too bad. The hardest part about driving home was all the fog on my car windows!

... Heavy Snow Warning in effect from 3 PM this afternoon to 9 am
CST Saturday...

The National Weather Service in Green Bay has issued a Heavy Snow
Warning... which is in effect from 3 PM this afternoon to 9 am CST
Saturday. The Freezing Rain Advisory has been canceled. The
Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

A total snowfall of 6 to 10 inches is expected in Vilas and Oneida
counties... with 5 to 8 inches in Lincoln... Langlade... Forest... and
Florence counties.

A Heavy Snow Warning means that significant amounts of snow are
forecast. If you plan to travel... keep an extra flashlight...
food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=GRB

Fox Cities:
A large band of rain will overspread all of eastern Wisconsin by 900 am. Some thunderstorms could be embedded in the rain band. The rain should help mix the lowest levels of the atmosphere...and should lead to a modest improvement in visibilities.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=GRB

Southern Wisconsin:
Dense fog advisory in effect until 9 am CST this morning...
Abundant low level moisture and light winds this morning has resulted
in widespread dense fog. The fog will reduce visibility to 1/4
mile or less through at least mid morning today.

Visibilities have dropped at or below one quarter mile across most
locations in south-central and southeastern Wisconsin... including
Madison... Mineral Point... Monroe... Milwaukee... Racine... and
Kenosha. This dense fog is expected to persist through at least 9
am... and may be slow to lift.

A dense fog advisory is issued when visibilities are reduced
frequently to less than 1/4 mile due to dense fog. If driving...
slow down... use your low beam headlights... and leave plenty of
distance between you and objects ahead.

This is Lisa with our weekend and baby update and I hope you all had a great weekend. Once again we had a busy but enjoyable weekend. Friday night, we celebrated my birthday (which was on Thursday) by going out to The Melting Pot (a fancy fondue restaurant) with our friends Jason and Nicole. We had a great time, and we were there eating dinner for four hours! That's not dinner followed by a few drinks, that's casually eating from 6:30-10:30! For those of you who are not familiar with the Melting Pot, it's a fondue restaurant with four courses: a cheese fondue, salad (not fondue ), meat/seafood fondue, then a chocolate fondue to finish up the evening.

Saturday we went to visit my dad, and then my mom's side of the family for Christmas. My mom's side of the family decided to celebrate Christmas a week early this year, and it worked out really well for us since we are always doing so much travelling around Christmas.

Sunday was our day at home, with the exception of Steve doing some Christmas shopping. We took care of a few things at home, and played a lot with our new toy, a Nintendo Wii. Steve finally obtained this very hard-to-find console on Wednesday, and it really is a lot of fun. The difference between the Wii and every other Nintendo system ever made is that this one relies on your actions more than your button-mashing skills. You literally swing the (remote control-shaped) controller in the air to perform in-game actions. The game Wii Sports was included with the system, so you literally swing it like a baseball bat to swing in baseball, swing it like a golf club to hit a golf ball, punch with it in boxing, swing it like a tennis racquet to play tennis, and do the bowling motions to bowl. It's a lot of fun, very addicting, and even gives you a little workout (especially boxing!)

Not too much is new with Bryce except that he can now crawl in and out of his pack n' play if he has something to stand on. He can also now open all of our doors, so we had to put child proof door knob covers on all the doors. He's also getting more creative with his toys and is finding new ways to play with them.

Well that wraps up the update. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. However you choose to celebrate the holidays, we wish you to be safe, healthy and happy this holiday season.

Playoff Feud
Nobody informed me that they will be unavailable this week, so the playoff games will run today through Friday as planned, with the winner being crowned after Christmas. Remember that even if you did not make the playoffs, you are still welcome to play and your answers will be included in the game results. Make a difference...play a spoiler role!

Dense fog advisory in effect until 10 am EST this morning...
Visibility will improve rapidly across Georgia and South Carolina coastal counties. Until that time...remain alert for rapid changes in visibility along your driving Route.

Dense fog will reduce visibility to near zero at times... creating
hazardous travel conditions across eastern South Carolina and
southeastern Georgia through mid morning. By 10 am... visibility
will rapidly improve across the region.

A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be
reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving... allow extra
time to reach your destination... slow down and use your low beam
headlights.

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Fog with isolated showers, then some sunshine. Highs upper 70s to near 80! Not too bad for a week prior to Christmas.

Dense fog will start to become more widespread after midnight.
The fog should begin to dissipate between 8 and 10 am. The fog
may linger later along the coast near Galveston Bay.

Motorists should drive with extreme caution and allow additional
travel time. Use low beams... reduce driving speed... and allow for
plenty of room between you and other cars. You can overtake
another vehicle quickly in poor visibilities... so slow down and
drive defensively.

Bowling Scores
For the third time this season, I made the local paper with my bowling scores. Last night I shot a 266 and a 223 with a 673 series. It's not quite my goal of a 700 series before the season is over, but it's still a pretty good evening of bowling!

Wisconsin Forecast:
Now: At 7am with a mostly cloudy sky east and scattered rain or snow showers west and central, temps are near 30 north, in the mid- 30s central and the upper 30s to near 40 south.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html
http://www.pollen.com/state.asp?id=wi

Synopsis: A weak area of low pressure and its associated occluded front is centered just north of North Dakota. This system is developing an area of scattered light rain or snow showers across the western two-thirds of Wisconsin this morning, with the rain/snow line currently in central Wisconsin. Look for scattered mostly rain showers this morning but tapering off this afternoon.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Scattered rain showers, mostly this morning and mixing with snow early north and central. Breezy, high of 44 central, near 40 north, and near 50 south. Chance of precip 70%. Happy 31st Birthday, Lisa!

Tonight: Becoming partly starry, breezy, lows lower 30s.

Tomorrow: Partly cloudy, highs lower 40s central, mid- 40s south.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy, maybe a rain shower south. Highs 41-46. Chance of rain 30%.
Next Week’s Outlook: High pressure looks to keep all significant weather systems south of Wisconsin through next week, although clouds and a few scattered light rain or snow showers are still possible. High temperatures will cool off a bit, but should still remain in the 30s, which is more than seasonable for this time of the year.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Sunshine, highs mid- 60s.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NV/Henderson.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USNV0040

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Areas of fog, isolated showers, highs upper 60s.
Dense fog advisory in effect until 9 am EST this morning...
A moist airmass in place across the area combined with calm winds
has resulted in conditions favorable for dense fog to develop.
Many locations will experience dense fog... with visibilities of
one quarter mile or less expected.

Along the coast... sea fog is expected to continue to slowly
penetrate inland during the mid morning hours. In locations where
dense fog is not already present... visibilities may deteriorate
further.

Conditions should begin to improve by 9 am as the fog
dissipates... especially away from the coast.

A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be
reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving... slow down...
use your low beam headlights... and leave plenty of distance ahead
of you. Be especially aware of school buses and children.

NowCast: (Courtesy of the National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
A band of showers will track from Princeton and Danville in green and Dodge counties...northeast through the cities of Fond Du Lac and West Bend through 8 am this morning. Other areas may see drizzle from time to time. Otherwise...look for widespread fog with visibility between 1 and 2 miles across the remainder of south central and southeast Wisconsin. Due to the lingering snow cover and very moist conditions...there will be areas of dense fog...reducing visibility to around 1/4 mile through about mid morning. Motorists are urged to be prepared for rapidly changing conditions during the morning commute.

Wisconsin Forecast:
Now: At 6am with clouds and fog across the state and scattered showers north and central, temps are already in the lower 40s central and south and the upper 30s north.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html
http://www.pollen.com/state.asp?id=wi

Synopsis: Low pressure centered in Iowa is continuing to push moisture into Wisconsin, thus all the fog we're seeing this morning. Look for scattered rain showers to accompany the fog today, with mild weather continuing courtesy of a nice upper-air jet stream ridge.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Cloudy and a little breezy with areas of fog (especially this morning) and scattered rain showers through the day. Maybe a rumble of thunder south. High of 45 central, lower 40s north, and upper 40s south. Chance of rain 70%.

Tonight: Cloudy and breezy with scattered showers ending. Partial clearing overnight. Lows lower 30s. Chance of rain this evening 30%.

Tomorrow: Partly sunny, still breezy, highs lower 40s central, mid- 40s south.

Extended:
Thursday: Partly sunny, breezy, maybe some drizzle or a flurry late, highs 42-47. Chance of precip 20%.
Friday: Partly cloudy, highs 41-46.
Saturday: Mostly cloudy, a weak rain or snow shower possible late. Highs 39-44. Chance of precip 20%.
Sunday: Partly cloudy, highs 42-47.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Partly sunny, highs near 60.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NV/Henderson.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USNV0040

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Sunshine, highs mid- 60s.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/SC/Hilton_Head_Island.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USSC0155

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Fog, then sunshine, highs mid- 70s.
Dense fog advisory in effect until 8 am CST this morning...
A combination of fog developing over the area and sea fog
spreading inland will lead to a foggy night across most of
southeast Texas tonight. Visibilities across most of the inland
counties this evening will be fluctuating between 1/2 and 2 miles
then drop down to 1/4 mile or less after midnight. Over the
nearshore waters and coastal counties dense sea fog with
visibilities of 1/4 mile or less will continue to spread inland.
Visibilities may approach near zero conditions over the coastal
areas.

The fog should lift in the morning as temperatures begin to rise
and a weak cold front moves through the region from west to east.

Motorists should drive with extreme caution and allow additional
travel time. Use low beams... reduce driving speed... and allow for
plenty of room between you and other cars. You can overtake
another vehicle quickly in poor visibilities... so slow down and
drive defensively.

Today in Evansville, Indiana: Scattered thundershowers, highs lower 60s.
Widespread showers across southwest Indiana...western Kentucky...and portions of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois along and east of a line from Qulin Missouri...to Jackson...to Carbondale Illinois...to Mount Vernon...will continue to move northeast across the region early this morning. A rumble or two of thunder is also possible. Pockets of heavier rain will occur...with hourly rainfall rates up to around one quarter of an inch or higher.

Predicting Space Weather
Space weather on Earth has long been thought to be largely a measure of the Sun's output. But mounting research reveals it is metered more by our own planet's changing magnetic field than was known.
The new study shows that the Northern Lights, also called aurora, and other space weather near Earth are driven by the rate at which the Earth’s and Sun’s magnetic fields connect, or merge, and not just by the solar wind’s electric field.

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 11, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 2:02 PM GMT on December 11, 2006

Good Morning,
This is Lisa with our weekend and baby update and I hope you all had a great weekend. Our weekend was fairly busy but enjoyable. We spent Saturday doing stuff around the house, including making Christmas cookies. Saturday evening, we went to the Thrivent Financial Employee Christmas party for a tasty dinner, then we went to see the band Led West at the Horseshoe Lounge in Appleton. This was our first time being able to see the newly formed band. They sounded awesome and we had a great time. Several of the band members were from the former country band Sweetwater, so we knew that they were going to put on a great show, and they definitely did. We didn't get to stay for the whole, but I'm sure the last two sets were even better than the first two. Hopefully next time we can stay for the whole show. Sunday after church, we did a little Christmas shopping, then we put up our Christmas Tree.

Well that wraps up our weekend update, but here is a little Bryce update. Lately he has been enjoying playing with our shoes. Anything from trying to wear and walk around in them, to using them as a telephone. It's so adorable watching him explore new things. Also, he climbed out of his pack n' play for the first time on Saturday. Lastly, he had fun helping us decorate Christmas cookies. He seemed to enjoy it and he had a smile on his face the whole time. That's about all that's new for this week. Have a great week.

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Sunshine, breezy, colder, highs mid- 40s today, but warming back to above 60 by Sunday.

wind chills 10 to 15 above zero this morning... the combination of temperatures in the upper 20s and lower 30s combined with still north winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph will produce wind chills of 10 to 15 degrees above zero through 8 am. School children and other people venturing outside this morning are urged to dress warmly. In addition...motorists... especially those driving high profile vehicles...are urged to use caution when traveling over the elevated bridges in the region. Today’s forecast grade: C

NowCast: (Courtesy of the National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
Look for brisk northwest winds around 10 to 15 mph with gusts to near 25 mph and cold temperatures in the single digits to near 10...for the morning commute to work or school. The winds and cold temperatures were producing wind chills of 5 below zero to 15 below zero. Dress appropriately to protect yourself from the cold.

Wisconsin Forecast:
Now: At 7am with cold sunshine, temps are in the single digits, but at least they're above zero.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html
http://www.pollen.com/state.asp?id=wi

Synopsis: Strong northerly winds in-between low pressure to our northeast and high pressure to our west will keep the cold air a-flowin' today. Temperatures will probably not even make it out of the teens today, but a warm-up is on the way by this weekend when the winds will shift and warmer southerly air comes into the state.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Partly cloudy, windy and cold. Maybe some light snow showers in northern Wisconsin with little accumulation expected. High of 17.

Tonight: Mostly clear, breezy, lows just above zero.

Tomorrow: Partly sunny, breezy and warmer, highs upper 20s central, just above 30 south.

Extended:
Saturday: Mostly sunny and warmer yet but still breezy, highs 38-43.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy and breezy with scattered light snow showers or flurries possible. Highs 34-39. Chance of snow 25%.
Next Week’s Outlook: Nothing too significant is expected next week with maybe some light snow Monday night and again Wednesday night. High temps should stick around the 30s, which is above normal for this time of the year. And who doesn't like being above normal?

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Sunshine, highs upper 60s.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NV/Henderson.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USNV0040

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Partly sunny, highs mid- 60s. And you have a lot of sympathy from me over this latest National Weather Service headline:
Wind chills 15 to 20 degrees after midnight...
An unseasonably strong area of high pressure will build into the
central part of the country today... driving an Arctic cold front
through southeast South Carolina. Northerly winds in the wake of
the cold front will allow an airmass with a polar origin to push
into the region. Although many locations along and west of Highway
17 have already experienced freezing temperatures... communities
closer to the coast have not yet fallen below the freezing mark.
Temperatures are expected to drop to sub-freezing levels late
tonight and early Friday morning across coastal communities of
southern South Carolina... including downtown Charleston... Sullivans
Island... Isle of Palms... James Island... Kiawah Island... Edisto
Beach... Fripp Island... Hilton Head and Daufuskie Island. In
addition to cold temperatures... brisk northerly winds will result
in wind chill readings between 15 and 20 degrees. Action should
be taken now to protect vulnerable plants and animals from this
expected freeze.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/SC/Hilton_Head_Island.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USSC0155

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Partly sunny, maybe a morning rain shower, windy, highs lower 60s.
Wind Advisory in effect from 9 am this morning to 10 PM CST this evening...
A strong cold front will move off the coast this morning. In the
wake of this front... northeast winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph
across the coastal counties of southeast Texas. Wind gusts of 35
to 40 mph are possible... especially across the immediate coastal
areas. These strong winds will continue into the evening
hours... then begin to slowly subside late this evening.

Drivers of vans... campers... trailers... and other high-profile
vehicles should be alert to the danger of these winds... especially
when driving along east to west oriented roads.

http://www.wunderground.com/US/TX/Pearland.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USTX1029

Today in Evansville, Indiana: Morning flurries, then decreasing clouds. Windy, highs upper 20s.
An area of snow flurries associated with an Arctic cold front will continue to pass through southeast Illinois...southwest Indiana... and northern Kentucky this morning. Some snow pellets or sleet may be mixed with the flurries. This will result in a dusting of frozen precipitation on mainly grassy areas and elevated surfaces. Motorists should take extra caution and look out for possible slick spots on roadways. A chilly wind will continue to gust above 20 mph for much of the morning hours.

New World Record Achieved in Solar Cell Technology
New Solar Cell Breaks the “40 Percent Efficient” Sunlight-to-Electricity Barrier
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Alexander Karsner today announced that with DOE funding, a concentrator solar cell produced by Boeing-Spectrolab has recently achieved a world-record conversion efficiency of 40.7 percent, establishing a new milestone in sunlight-to-electricity performance. This breakthrough may lead to systems with an installation cost of only $3 per watt, producing electricity at a cost of 8-10 cents per kilowatt/hour, making solar electricity a more cost-competitive and integral part of our nation’s energy mix.

Nintendo tells Wii players to be careful
Company offers advice to prevent injuries or damage from use of remote device.
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -- Nintendo Co. Ltd. has some cautionary advice for players of its Wii video game console: when waving the controller, use the wrist strap, keep your palms dry and, whatever you do, don't let go.
The Wii has been pitched as a cheap alternative to pricier machines from Microsoft Corp. (Charts) and Sony Corp (Charts)., but some gamers complain they are facing unexpected costs after losing their grip on the console's remote control and smashing their televisions and other appliances.
There is even one site, Wiihaveaproblem.com, dedicated to chronicling tales of Wii-related carnage. On Wednesday, the site's damage toll included reports of 13 broken straps, 7 televisions and 2 laptop computers.

Synopsis: You didn't actually think this morning sunshine was going to last, did you? An Alberta Clipper-type low pressure system is moving east through southern Saskatchewan on its way to southern Ontario. Wisconsin Weather Update for December 4, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 1:47 PM GMT on December 04, 2006

Good morning,
This is Lisa with our weekend and baby update and I hope you all had a great weekend. Our weekend was busy and fun. We went ballroom dancing on Friday with our friends Jason and Nicole. It had a been a long time since we've been out dancing, but Steve and I wanted to try out our new dancing shoes. We were all a little rusty but we had a good time.

Saturday, we had our family pictures for our Christmas cards taken, which was ok to start but Bryce got a little restless halfway through and we had to stop early. Afterwards, we had a game night with some friends at our house.

Sunday, Steve went to the Packers game with his friend John M., where they sat in the end zone about halfway up and watched the Packers lose again 38-10. After he got home, I went to see John Berry at the Grand Opera house in Oshkosh for his Christmas concert. He sounded awesome, and this was probably his best performance that I've seen. He has such a wonderful voice, and he's so talented. We even got to meet him and have our pictures taken and get autographs with him after the show. He was very friendly and personable, and it was great to finally meet him. I've seen him in concert several times before but this was my first time getting to actually talk with him, and get my picture taken.

Not too much is new with Bryce this week, except that he turned 17 months old yesterday. He also crawled out of his crib for the second time on Saturday. If he keeps it up, we'll need to upgrade to a big boy bed. Well, that wraps up the update, have a great week.

Weather Update Poll: (Thanks John M. for the poll idea)
Should Wisconsin have gotten to play in a BCS game?
Yes - the two teams per conference rule is ridiculous!
No - rules are rules and I'm happy with the Capital One Bowl.

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Same forecast as Las Vegas...except for the Freeze Warning below.
Freeze warning in effect from 2 am to 9 am EST Tuesday...
A strong area of high pressure will build into the region from
the west today and tonight... resulting in unseasonably cold
temperatures across southern South Carolina and southeast Georgia.

Clear skies and light or calm winds are expected to result in
excellent radiational cooling conditions across the area
tonight... allowing temperatures to dip to sub-freezing levels for
several hours. Plans should be made now to protect vulnerable
plants... animals from this expected freeze.

The freeze warning includes the coastal counties of southeast
South Carolina... but freezing temperatures are not expected to
affect coastal communities east of the intracoastal as well as
downtown Charleston. In southeast Georgia the freeze warning is
mainly along a line near and west of Interstate 95. Temperatures
in downtown Savannah will fall close to freezing by Tuesday
morning.

A freeze warning is issued to alert the public to the potential
for freezing temperatures during the overnight and early morning
hours. People with agricultural interests should take action to
protect outside plants and vegetation from freezing conditions.

Synopsis: Can we get some love for our fancy government-run weather models? Two days ago the models predicted a partly sunny day across all of Wisconsin for today, and now southeastern Wisconsin is calling for about a foot of snow! Even the Scientific Forecaster Discussion from the National Weather Service called the model run a "debacle." So anyway, December will be coming in like a lion for many of us, with snowblower-type snowfall amounts expected across southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. Read on for details.

Today in Evansville, Indiana: Scattered morning showers, then partly cloudy the rest of the weekend. Windy today, highs in the 30s this weekend.
Wind Advisory in effect until 4 PM CST this afternoon...
A deepening area of low pressure moved north across the lower Ohio
Valley region overnight. In the wake of the low... gusty southwest to
west winds from 20 to 35 mph are expected... with occasional gusts
to 45 mph possible today. The strong and gusty winds will
gradually taper off from southwest to northeast through the day.
The worst hit areas will be along Interstate 64 in southern
Illinois... and the Evansville tri state area through the morning
hours.

A Wind Advisory means that winds of at least 30 mph are expected.
Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for
high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
---------------------
Southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph will persist through mid morning and become more westerly. There have been numerous reports of trees down and power outages across southwest Indiana from the gradient winds. More of this type damage can be expected across the quad state this morning. Drivers of high profile vehicles should use caution. Otherwise...the rain will mix with and change over to light snow showers or flurries through 9 am. No significant accumulation is expected.

Who Says Money Can't Buy Friends?
It looks like some users of popular networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook have stooped so low as to actually pay real money for friends. These friends aren't even real believe it or not. You can apparently choose from a selection of 'models' to leave you customized comments to look like you have friends and are popular online.
