Today’s forecast grade: B+

Forecast:
Now: At 6am with sunshine, temps are mostly around the mid- 50s.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html
http://www.pollen.com/state.asp?id=wi

Synopsis: The area of high pressure that gave us the nicer weather yesterday has moved off to New England. A new area of low pressure now in the Dakotas will be streaking across the Midwest today, and promises to do its best to deliver some much-needed rain to Wisconsin. A line of storms is currently moving through the Dakotas and west-central Minnesota, so expect the sunshine to go away by this afternoon and thunderstorms developing by this evening, some of which could become severe.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Morning sunshine, then increasing clouds from west to east. Scattered showers and thunderstorms developing late this afternoon and this evening. There is a moderate risk of severe weather across much of Wisconsin today, including the chance for strong winds, hail, and maybe even a tornado or two. High of 87 north and central, upper 80s to near 90 south. Chance of rain 40%.

Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, some of which may be severe. Lows upper 60s. Chance of rain 50%.

Tomorrow: Decreasing clouds, highs low to mid- 80s.

Extended:
Friday: Partly cloudy, cooler highs 75-80.
Saturday: Mostly cloudy, isolated thundershowers, highs 77-82. Chance of rain 25%.
Sunday: Partly sunny, maybe a shower, highs 80-85. Chance of rain 20%.
Next Week's Outlook: Look for temperatures to remain in the low to mid- 80s with a chance of rain Tuesday and Wednesday.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Isolated storms, highs around 107.
Thunderstorms over Las Vegas will move across the downtown area and the east side of the city until 5 am. Another thunderstorm will move across the west side of the city including the lakes and the Summerlin area. The storms will move north at 10 to 15 mph and produce occasional lighting...brief moderate or heavy rain and possibly gusty winds up to 35 mph.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NV/Henderson.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USNV0040

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Partly cloudy, highs near 90 but mid- 90s inland.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/SC/Hilton_Head_Island.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USSC0155

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Isolated storms, highs low to mid- 90s.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/TX/League_City.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USTX0745
http://www.wunderground.com/US/TX/Pearland.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USTX1029

Today in Evansville, Indiana: Sunshine, highs mid- 90s.
Heat advisory in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 7 PM CDT Thursday...
A large dome of high pressure will keep oppressively hot and humid
air across the lower Ohio Valley for at least the next 48 hours.
An air mass that produced highs of 95 to 100 degrees just off to
our south and west Tuesday should provide similar highs for the
quad state today and tomorrow. Combined with high humidity
levels... you can expect the heat index to peak near 105
today... and in the 105 to 110 range Thursday.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink plenty of fluids... stay in an air-conditioned
room... stay out of the sun... and check up on relatives and
neighbors.

Synopsis: The cold front that developed the line of severe thunderstorms yesterday evening has pushed south of the Wisconsin border. Wisconsin Weather Update for July 17, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 11:59 AM GMT on July 17, 2006

Happy Monday morning,
This is Lisa with our weekend and baby update and I hope you all had a great weekend. I've been on hiatus the last few weeks so Steve has been filling in for me. Things have been very busy around here with my grandma's death. Thanks to all of you who expressed your condolences in regards to my grandma. It was much appreciated and I appreciate your thoughtfulness. She lived a long, happy life and she had just turned 89 years old on July 3rd. As some of you know she shares her birthday with Bryce. We knew her time was coming so her passing wasn't a big shock to our family. We know that she is in a better place now and she's no longer suffering.
A birthday party was celebrated for her on Sunday July 2, with all of her family and friends there she made the comment "I wish this day would never end."
Not too much else is new with us. We do have a few Bryce updates though.

New Shoes:
Now that Bryce is walking we bought his first pair of tennis shoes about 2 weeks ago. It took him a little less than a week to learn to walk in them as walking with shoes is a whole new experience, but he's walking very well in them now. The best part about his new shoes is that they look exactly like daddy's (but much smaller!)

Furniture climbing adventures:
Our little monkey Bryce has also learned to climb up on the furniture by himself now. He can get up and down from the ottoman by himself. He can also get up on the couch by himself but needs assistance when getting down.

Well, that wraps up our update and I hope you all have a great week.

Bryce Pictures:
And better late than never, pictures from Bryce's first birthday party and his very amusing poses while watching fireworks are now online. Enjoy!

Wisconsin Weather Update for July 13, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 12:33 PM GMT on July 13, 2006

Good Thursday morning!

Many of you didn't receive my weather update yesterday, as some of the Match Game answers ended up kicking in corporate and personal SPAM filters (I should have made the questionable answers web-only! ) Remember if you don't get my update for some reason, you can read it online or subscribe to my RSS Feed and be automatically notified when new updates are written.

Anyway, as some of you read yesterday, Lisa's grandmother passed away early yesterday morning. Her funeral is set for tomorrow morning in Berlin, Wisconsin, so there won't be another update until Monday. I hope you all have a fun, safe and reasonably cool weekend.

Outburst Thursday
There won't be an official update tomorrow, but I will post the results of the game and point standings sometime this weekend online. Make sure you have your answers in by Friday afternoon to ensure you receive credit!

Today's Topic: Things You Take on a Trip

Rules
Send me four answers to the topic above. Answers that are also listed on the Hasbro card will receive one point each. More rules can be found here:
http://www.lutheransonline.com/weather/rules

Today’s forecast grade: A- (if you enjoy hot weather!)

NowCast: (Courtesy of the National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
Dense fog advisory in effect until 9 am CDT this morning...
Dense fog has lowered visibilities down to 1/4 mile in the Wisconsin River Valley...and adjacent river valleys...between Wisconsin Dells and Lone Rock. Motorists in or near this area should be ready to slow down and allow for extra distances between vehicles. This dense fog will burn off by about 900 am. Over the remainder of south central and southeast Wisconsin... areas of fog will reduce visibilities to anywhere from 1 mile to 6 miles. However...some pockets of fog in green and rock counties will reduce visibilities to 1/4 to 1/2 mile until about 900 am.

The dense fog advisory is in effect primarily for the Wisconsin
River Valley and adjacent low lands due to fog reducing
visibilities to 1/4 mile or less this morning.

If you travel on a Road that GOES down into or crosses the
Wisconsin River Valley from the Wisconsin Dells down to the Lone
Rock area... be ready for hazardous driving conditions.

The dense fog should dissipate by about 9 am.

Other local pockets of dense fog will also be found in parts of
Racine County and Kenosha County. Elsewhere over portions of southeast
and south central Wisconsin visibilities will be reduced to 1 to 3
miles.

A dense fog advisory is issued when visibilities are reduced
frequently to less than 1/4 mile due to dense fog. If driving...
slow down... use your low beam headlights... and leave plenty of
distance between you and objects ahead.

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with blue sky above and areas of dense fog below, temps are in the 60s.

Synopsis: An area of high pressure is centered just to our east, and since winds swirl clockwise around high pressure systems, that means that the winds will shift to become from the south. This will help to bring hot and humid weather back to Wisconsin, and it looks like it's going to stick around at least through the first half of next week! Northwestern Wisconsin broke the 90 degree mark yesterday and Bismarck, North Dakota hit 105, so the heat is coming!

Today: Morning fog, then partly cloudy, very warm and a little humid. High of 88 central and south, and just over 90 again north and west.

Tonight: Partly cloudy with patchy fog developing again. Lows upper 60s.

Tomorrow: Partly sunny, hot and humid, maybe an afternoon or early evening thunderstorm. Highs upper 80s to near 90. Rain chance 25%.

Extended:
Saturday: Partly cloudy, hot and humid, highs 92-97.
Sunday: Partly cloudy, hot and humid, highs 91-96.
Next Week’s Outlook: The hot and humid weather sticks around with highs in the lower 90s Monday, then upper 80s Tuesday and Wednesday. Rain chances begin to increase as well, but it could just be the weather models normalizing the pattern.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Sunshine, hot, highs near 107 today and near 110 this weekend.
Excessive heat watch in effect from Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening...

Wisconsin Weather Update for July 12, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 12:48 PM GMT on July 12, 2006

Good Wednesday morning!

Quick Personal Update:
It saddens me to report that Lisa's last living grandparent, Grandma Beck, passed away this morning at 4:30am. My sympathy goes out to all of her family. She just had her 89th birthday on July 3rd (which also is Bryce's birthday). The funeral date is tentatively planned for Saturday in Berlin.

As for this flu, Bryce and I are both feeling a little better today. I'm not quite 100% yet but I think the worst is well past me now, and considering that at one point I lost seven pounds with this flu, I think it'll take me a few days to regain the energy that I had pre-flu. Soup is still in my forecast for the next day or so though, just to make sure it doesn't come back!

By: HaleStorm, 2:29 PM GMT on July 11, 2006

Good Tuesday morning!

Quick Personal Update:
There hasn't been any new news about Lisa's grandmother, which is good news I suppose. Lisa was feeling well enough to go into work today, and I thought I was on the mend too until about 2am last night, when I regressed back to the early stages of this thing. Ick. Bryce has been sleeping more than usual, including sleeping almost from 5pm yesterday afternoon through 7am this morning, and his stomach seems like it's still hurting too.

Wisconsin Weather Update for July 10, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 12:56 PM GMT on July 10, 2006

Good Monday morning!

This is Steve with a quick weekend update, and I hope you all had a great weekend. This hasn't exactly been a great weekend for us. Lisa's grandmother was taken to the hospital on Friday with congestive heart failure and doctors have said she may only have a few days to live. We were going to go see her yesterday, but our whole family came down with this nasty stomach bug. How bad has this thing been? We all have had lots of things you'd rather not be reading about on a Monday morning, I haven't eaten any food since Saturday afternoon, I spent practically the whole day in bed yesterday, and I have lost six pounds since Sunday morning. It's a struggle just writing this update, which is why it's not going to be very long today. There was one nice thing over the weekend - on Saturday we travelled to Waterford (southwest of Milwaukee) for a Pachucki Family Reunion (my mom's dad's side of the family). They have reunions every two years and it was nice seeing many of our more-distant relatives again (and showing off Bryce!). Have a great week everyone!

The regular season will run through September 15 and the playoff week will be the week of September 18-22.
September 11-15 will be a double point week.
The top player at the end of the playoff week will win a lovely weather-related prize (if not a previous winner in the last year).
If you would like your city and state listed next to your name, send me a note with the information.
Point totals in parenthesis are cumulative for only this week.
Maroon text indicates that these players had the best week. Green text indicates a perfect week. Bolded text indicates players played this week. (available via email version only).
Please verify your point total for accuracy. Any scoring updates will be immediately posted on the Web site.
Perfect Score: 9

It may only be the first week, but look at how the top of the point standings have changed! The top five players this week have yet to make it into any season's playoffs, and the only two players to score perfect weeks are a newbie and my little sister. This league's got some parity! Next week's games resume their normal schedule on Tuesday and Thursday. Make it a great weekend everyone, and thanks for playing!

Climate change 'real and severe'
An expert panel convened by BBC News has concluded that climate change is "real and dangerous".
Temperatures are likely to rise by 3C to 5C by the end of the century, with impacts likely to be "severe" but not "catastrophic", the panel said.
It also concluded that politicians are unlikely to cut emissions sufficiently to prevent dangerous global heating.

In Case You Missed It:

Hole in one in 67 million
Golf novice beats the odds to shoot 2 aces in 35 minutes
Sanjay Kuttemperoor of Brookfield has played about 25 rounds of golf in his life and has never broken 100. He's never even known the satisfaction of marking a birdie on his score card.
"My best score is either a 105 or a 106," he said. "I'm obviously not that good."
On June 24, Kuttemperoor made two holes-in-one in a five-hole span at Treetops Resort in Treetops Village, Mich. He used his Callaway 8-iron on both shots.
Lloyds of London set the odds for such a feat at 67 million to 1. Based on those odds, a golfer would have to play a round of golf 365 days a year for 183,561 years to accomplish it.

Thanks Chad for the link!
"Google" declared a verb
Having the public use your company name as a verb is, in one way, a marketer's Shangri-la. Many companies would kill for the name recognition and popularity of "xerox," "google," and "hoover." For the companies themselves, though, being "verbed" has its dark side. A company that does not defend its trademark risks losing it when it becomes a common figure of speech, which explains why Google is not happy about its recent inclusion in a new Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Wisconsin Weather Update for July 5, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 12:10 PM GMT on July 05, 2006

Good Wednesday morning!

This is Steve with the weekly personal update, and hopefully everyone had a great Fourth of July weekend! We were a flutter of activity over the last few days, which included Bryce's First Birthday Party at our house on Saturday, watching the Appleton fireworks from our friends Steve and Trish's house Monday, and several visits to and from our families Friday, Sunday and Tuesday.

Bryce had a great first birthday party at our house on Saturday, with lots of food, presents, and of course, the obligatory cake-eating spectacle. Bryce also enjoyed the fireworks Monday evening and didn't cry once, although he was much more excited over the 25-cent fireworks Steve L. was lighting in his driveway than the gigantic fireworks overhead! Pictures of both events are coming soon.

The only other new thing with Bryce this week is that he is now holding his morning and nighttime bottle on his own, and often will refuse to drink it unless he gets to hold it by himself. So he's walking around the living room floor, takes a few sips from his bottle, goes over to a toy, plays with it for a bit, then drinks a little more, throws the bottle across the room, plays with a toy, goes back to where he threw the bottle, takes a few more sips, etc. It may take twice as long for him to drink it, but it makes things a tiny bit easier for us...I think.

Wheel of Fortune Results
Better late than never, here are the results! The additional five days to submit your answers gave an opportunity to think a bit more about the answers if you couldn't get one of them right, and several of you took me up on that. So most people did end up getting all three right, but that wasn't the case last Friday morning when the results are usually posted. Look for the next points opportunity tomorrow when the feud returns!
