Good Thursday morning!

Mad Gab Thursday

Game #1: Up Oz Stud Inner

Game #2: Ash Her Tanned High

Game #3: Chest Leaf Meow Tough Fit

Bonus Points: 9, 19, 29, 39

Rules
Ignoring punctuation and word spacing, these seemingly random set of words actually make out a common phrase. Three puzzles are given and people get one point for each correct answer. One bonus point is also given out to people who respond with at least one correct answer in the order specified within that day's intro (like a DJ giving away a prize to the 9th caller). Also, if less than half of the people who respond get it correct, those who did get it right will receive an extra point.

American Idol Results
Ok, so my prediction was just a bit off. Katharine, who I thought would unfairly get eliminated, ended up with an apology from the judges and placed in the top two. Not too shabby - this could give her a huge fan boost over the next few weeks. But besides that, the bottom two were fairly predictable, with Kellie thankfully getting eliminated last night. Not that she has been horrible during this whole thing - Kellie has had a few good performances. Unfortunately for her, I think she peaked too early in the competition and the others are improving a lot more than she has, making her look bad by comparison.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/04/27/idol.ap/index.html
I forgot to put a link to the message board in yesterday's update - for those who watch the show, what did you think? And who should go next?

http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: Another day of sunshine is here, courtesy of a large area of high pressure to our south. There is a very weak frontal boundary hovering over central Wisconsin right now, but while no precipitation (and barely any clouds) are expected, it may drop the temperature a few degrees compared to yesterday across central and northern Wisconsin.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Mostly sunny, high of 61 central, near 60 north, but upper 60s south.

Sunday: Breezy with scattered showers, again focusing more to the south. Highs 54-59. Chance of rain 50% central, 80% south.
Next Week’s Outlook: Besides a few lingering showers south on Monday and another weak round of showers on Wednesday, it looks to be a fairly dry week with high temperatures around 60-65 to start the week, but perhaps cooling into the 50s by week's end.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Isolated thunderstorms, highs upper 70s.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NV/Henderson.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USNV0040

Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will affect parts of southeast South Carolina this morning. Through 8 am most of the wet weather will occur east of a line from Saint Stephen to Ridgeville...to Walterboro...Grays and Tarboro. Brief heavy rains and cloud to ground lightning will accompany some of this activity as it moves northeast and east around 30 mph.

across portions of southern South Carolina...
An unstable atmosphere will combine with an upper level system to
allow for the possibility of a few thunderstorms this afternoon
over southern South Carolina... mainly across the Charleston tri

American Idol Commentary
Last week Wednesday I ran an online-exclusive American Idol commentary paragraph between the Tuesday competition and the Wednesday results show. I know a lot of you guys watch the show and we do too, so here's briefly what I thought of last night's show. If you haven't seen it yet, you already should have stopped reading this. First of all, it wasn't nearly as good as last week, which may have been the strongest show in the series' history. But it was still fairly entertaining. I thought the judges were too harsh on Katharine McPhee - I thought she sang the song pretty well. Would they have been as harsh had she not been the first one to perform? Chris, Elliott and Paris were very good. Taylor Hicks wasn't as good as he has been, and as for Kellie...well...she did it to herself by choosing Unchained Melody. Terrible song choice if you're an average singer. I can't believe Simon Cowell said she was better than Carrie Underwood earlier this season. Bottom Three: Katharine, Kellie and Paris, and unfortunately Katharine, not Kellie, goes home.

Today’s forecast grade: B

NowCast: (Courtesy of the National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
Scattered light rain showers will continue along and south of a Milwaukee to Lone Rock line between 6 am and 8 am. Look for decreasing clouds to the north of this line. Expect rainfall totals of under one tenth of an inch at most locations. A few snow flakes may mix in with the light rain at times. The light rain is expected to push out of southern Wisconsin into northern Illinois between 830 am and 9 am. Expect north to northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph away from Lake Michigan...with winds increasing to 20 to 30 mph with higher gusts in the counties bordering the Lake Michigan shore between 430 am and 9 am. The gusty winds will begin to ease late this morning.

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with sunshine north, clouds central and clouds with scattered rain showers south, temps are in the low to mid- 30s. And would you believe Mineral Point, Wisconsin is reporting light snow at this hour?
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: A cold front moved through late yesterday, generating some dark clouds but a reasonably weak round of showers across the state. A few of these are still lingering in far southern Wisconsin, but these will move south of the border shortly. High pressure from the Dakotas is moving in, meaning we should start to see quite a bit more sunshine over the next few days, but today's high temperatures will cool off behind the front.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Scattered rain showers early this morning south, mixing with a few snow flakes at times. Decreasing clouds from north to south today. Much cooler compared to yesterday with a high of 55 north, central and south.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, lows low to mid- 30s.

Tomorrow: Partly sunny, warmer, highs lower 60s central, mid- 60s south.

Wisconsin Weather Update for April 24, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 12:31 PM GMT on April 24, 2006

Happy Monday morning,
This is Lisa with our weekend and baby update, and I hope you all had a great weekend. On Friday, my friend Lisa and I went on a girls' night out, while Steve and Bryce had a daddy/son night. Lisa and I took a road trip to Janesville to see the band The Swing Crew. We had a great time, and the show was worth the long drive. Saturday, we took Bryce swimming at the YMCA. He seems to enjoy it more and more every time we go. We got a lot of smiles out of him, and he was having a good time. Steve took several pictures too (see below). Sunday after church, my sister-in-law Katie came over for a visit. We went out for lunch at Applebee's, then we hung out at our house for a while. Bryce had his 9-month doctor's appointment last week. His weight is 19 lb. 1 oz. and is almost 29.5 inches long, meaning he's still a string bean - tall and skinny. His latest thing is to do little fishy-moves with his mouth, where he opens and closes it quickly, as if he was pretending to be a fish. He got a bit of a cold yesterday, too, but hopefully he'll feel better soon. Well, that wraps up the update, have a great week.

Swimming Photos
Eight pictures of Bryce in the YMCA swimming pool are online.

Today’s forecast grade: B

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with sunshine mixed with a few clouds southwest and northwest, temps are in the low to mid- 40s.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: The weather will continue an on-again, off-again pattern, much like our beloved Milwaukee Brewers (who won 11-0 Saturday, then followed that up by losing 11-0 yesterday). The stagnant area of low pressure that gave us the mostly cloudy sky and isolated showers from time to time over the last few days has finally moved off to the east, but a cold front associated with a new system is just entering northwestern Wisconsin at this hour. Look for another round of precipitation to move through late, then colder, drier air returns to Wisconsin. And if you don't like it, you can blame the Meteorologist this time - I had a major case of insomnia last night and didn't fall asleep until almost 5am!

Today: Morning sunshine with increasing clouds in the afternoon. Scattered afternoon showers north, a chance of showers central. High of 65 central, lower 60s north, near 70 south. Chance of rain 40% north, 25% central.

Tonight: Scattered showers central and south, with decreasing clouds from north to south overnight. Lows mid- 30s. Chance of rain 60% central, 70% south.

Tomorrow: Mostly sunny and colder. Highs only in the lower 50s.

Extended:
Wednesday: Partly cloudy, warmer, highs 61-66.

Today’s forecast grade: B-

Forecast:
Now: At 6am with isolated showers in northern Wisconsin and sunshine across most of central and southern portions of the state, temps are in the low to mid- 40s.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: That slow-moving, weak area of low pressure is still hanging around as expected, currently centered near Hayward, Wisconsin, and is generating clouds and a few showers across northern Wisconsin. The low will continue to move very slowly to the southeast, meaning that central and southern Wisconsin will probably start seeing some of these showers or isolated thunderstorms by this afternoon. It's a fairly weak system though, so no severe weather is anticipated and even any thunderstorms that develop probably won't be all that interesting. Have a great weekend everyone and as always, thanks for reading!
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Morning sunshine with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms developing by this afternoon. Cooler, high of 63 central, upper 50s to near 60 north, mid- 60s south. Chance of rain 35%.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy with a few showers, lows low to mid- 40s. Chance of rain 40%.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy with more chances at some scattered showers or isolated thunderstorms. Highs upper 50s central, lower 60s south. Chance of rain 40%.

Sunday: Becoming partly sunny, highs low to mid- 60s.

Next Week:
Monday: Scattered thundershowers, breezy and cooler, highs 54-59. Chance of rain 30%.
Tuesday: Partly sunny, cooler, highs 51-56.
Wednesday: Partly cloudy, cooler yet, highs 47-52. We haven't had temperatures below normal in quite some time.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Partly cloudy and breezy at times through this weekend, highs mid- 80s today, lower 80s tomorrow and only mid- 70s Sunday. Brrr!
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NV/Henderson.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USNV0040

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Isolated afternoon showers today, breezy, highs upper 70s. A better chance of storms tomorrow, dry Sunday, highs upper 70s.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/SC/Hilton_Head_Island.html
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USSC0155

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Morning severe thunderstorms, then another round of storms later today. Highs mid- 80s. Partly cloudy and breezy at times this weekend, highs lower 80s.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch 231 in effect until 9 am CDT this morning...
Hail to 1.5 inches in diameter... thunderstorm wind gusts to 70
mph... and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is approximately along and 55
statute miles either side of a line from 45 miles south of
Victoria Texas to 40 miles northeast of Houston Texas. For a
complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch outline
update (wous64 kwns wou1).

Remember... a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally
do produce tornadoes.

Other watch information... continue... ww 229... ww 230...

Discussion... quasi-linear MCS is fcst to continue moving generally
esewd from ww 230 toward mid/upper TX coast. Foregoing air mass is
favorably sheared... and also sufficiently buoyant with MLCAPES up to
around 1500 j/kg. Increasing cinh with swd extent should limit
backbuilding... so complex will forward-propagate with forced lift
along leading outflow edge.

Aviation... a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft
to 1.5 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60
knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean storm
motion vector 29035.

... Record high temperature set at Galveston...
A record high temperature of 83 degrees was set at Galveston
yesterday. This ties the old record of 83 set in 2000.

Today in Evansville, Indiana: Morning fog, scattered thunderstorms, highs lower 70s. Partly cloudy Saturday, isolated storms Sunday, highs mid- to upper 70s.
Dense fog advisory in effect until 9 am CDT this morning...
Visibilities ranging from one quarter mile to near zero are
possible through early morning... especially in low lying areas
and near bodies of water.

A dense fog advisory means visibilities will frequently be
reduced to less than one quarter mile. If driving... slow down...
use your headlights... leave plenty of distance ahead of you... and
allow extra time to reach your destination.

Aside from an isolated light to moderate shower...areas of dense fog will persist through the early morning hours across much of the area...as winds remain mostly calm. Visibilities could drop down to a quarter of a mile or less in some locations. Motorists should use extra caution while driving early this morning.

Dimming the Sun - NOVA
"Dimming the Sun" investigates the discovery that the sunlight reaching Earth has been growing dimmer, which may seem surprising given all the international concern over global warming. At first glance, less sunlight might hardly seem to matter when our planet is stewing in greenhouse gases. But the discovery of global dimming has led several scientists to revise their models of the climate and how fast it's changing. According to one recent and highly controversial model, the worst-case warming scenario could be worse than anyone has predicted. "Dimming the Sun" unravels this baffling climate conundrum and the implications for Earth's future.

National Weather Service Severe Weather Spotter Training
Last night I attended the annual Severe Weather Spotter training class from the NWS, recertifying my spotter status. If you want to learn about classifying and recognizing storm cell structures, many of the handouts are available on the official spotter site (scroll down a bit to get to the PDFs). Did you know that Wisconsin was in the top 6 for states with the most tornadoes in 2005, even beating out such states as Iowa and Oklahoma!

American Idol Predictions
I'm going to try a new weekly column about the #1 show on TV, American Idol. Last night's episode was by far the most entertaining of the season with almost all of the singers really doing well. They could take the songs from last night, make a CD, and sell tons of copies.
But who gets the boot tonight? Well, even though Kellie had by far the worst performance of the night, she still has too much of a following to get the lowest number of votes. The bottom three will probably be Ace, Elliott and Paris, and in a surprise, Paris, not Ace, gets eliminated. What do you think?

Forecast:
Now: At 8am with a cloudy sky and a line of showers and isolated thunderstorms stretching from northwestern Wisconsin to south-central Wisconsin, temps are in the upper 40s to near 50.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: Build an ark. An area of low pressure to our south is helping out a stronger area of low pressure to our west to generate a weak line of thundershowers across Wisconsin this morning. After this moves through, we may see some sunshine by this afternoon, but when this stronger low eventually makes its way to the western Great Lakes, it's going to need a hotel room because it will be here for a 4-day, 3-night stay.

Today: Cloudy with scattered thundershowers this morning. Maybe some sunshine by this afternoon. High of 63 central, mid- 60s north, mid- to upper 60s south. Chance of rain this morning 40%.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, maybe a shower redeveloping. Lows mid- 40s. Chance of rain 20%.

Tomorrow: Cloudy with scattered showers. Highs low to mid- 60s central, upper 60s south. Chance of rain 40%.

Extended:
Friday: Mostly cloudy with more scattered showers. Cooler, highs 58-63. Chance of rain 50%.

Wisconsin Weather Update for April 17, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 1:02 PM GMT on April 17, 2006

Good Monday morning,
This is Lisa with our weekend and baby update, and I hope you all had a great weekend and a happy Easter. Our weekend was very busy but nice since it was spent with family. Friday evening, we went to a Good Friday church service, and Steve played the role of Peter during the service (he had two lines, both of which were "I am not.") He says he was proud to have memorized all of his lines after spending several hours the night before preparing for his performance.
Saturday, we spent the day in town, running lots of errands, and Easter Sunday was our day of travel. We travelled to Genesee to see my father-in-law and step-mother in law. We had a nice visit with them before all of their dinner guests arrived. Then we went to my mother-in-law's in Oconomowoc for Easter dinner, which was also very nice. The Easter bunny was apparently very busy this year. Bryce got three big Easter baskets with goodies, and Steve and I even got two Easter baskets.

Baby update:
Not too much is new with Bryce except that I took him swimming for the 2nd time last week, and he seemed to like it a lot better than the first time. It may be because I took him in a warmer and smaller pool. He's also teething and we think a fifth tooth might be coming in soon. He's saying mama, dada and baba more frequently now, although we're not sure if it's just the syllables coming out of his babble or if he knows what he's referring to. A few days ago, he got his arm stuck in his hi-chair and started yelling "dada! dada!", so who knows? Bryce also learned that things can go inside the VCR, so add that to the list of things to watch for in future update intros.

Well that wraps up the update, have a great week.

Bryce Photos
More pictures of Bryce were added, including bunnies, bouncy balls, and things that don't belong inside a VCR.

More Worms!
Interesting article on earthworms. I didn't know nightcrawlers had five hearts.
Earthworms
http://www.enhg.org/articles/worms.htm

This link sums up most of what I've heard about the reasons why: Basically, worms typically mate above ground and they need to be moist to breathe. During or shortly after a good rain is one of the few times the surface conditions are right for both mating and breathing.
Why do worms crawl on the sidewalk after it rains?

Today’s forecast grade: A-

Forecast:
Now: At 9am with a mix of sunshine and clouds north and central, and some scattered showers and thunderstorms south, temps are in the low to mid- 50s central but low to mid- 60s south. And because I work for a Lutheran non-profit organization, I get the day off (which is why my update was quite late this morning - I slept in until Bryce woke me up!)
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: What an evening across Wisconsin! Monster hail slammed through parts of Wisconsin with golf-ball sized, racquetball-sized, and even baseball-sized hail covering the ground near Madison, and a gigantic 4.25" diameter hailstone dropped in Jefferson County (east of Madison). We only got pea-sized hail at our house, which normally is a pretty interesting event, but after hearing the earlier reports, it didn't seem quite as magnificent. As for today, an occluded weather system is still generating some showers and thunderstorms south, but look for another very mild day across the state with perhaps an isolated late-afternoon thunderboomer.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Scattered morning showers and isolated thunderstorms south, otherwise partly sunny and mild with an isolated afternoon thunderstorm again possible. Nothing severe is anticipated, though, so don't expect any bowling ball-sized hail today. High of 73 central, near 70 north but upper 70s to maybe even near 80 south! Chance of afternoon rain 25%.

Tonight: Mostly clear, lows mid- 40s.

Saturday: Mostly sunny during the morning with increasing clouds late in the day and a chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday night (slight risk of severe). Highs mid- 60s central, near 70 south. Rain chance 60%.

Easter Sunday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mostly early in the day, then cooler. Highs low to mid- 50s. Rain chance 60%.

Next Week:
Monday: Partly cloudy, highs 56-61. A nice day to finally do your taxes, you bum!
Tuesday: Showers and thunderstorms developing late. Highs 55-60. Chance of rain Tuesday night 40%.
Wednesday: Maybe a morning shower, highs 57-62. Chance of rain 30%.

Sprint users can track children via GPS
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Up until now, parents had to deal with a separate company or buy special equipment to track their children through their cellphones. Sprint Nextel becomes the first U.S. wireless provider to sell its own product when the Family Locator Service rolls out Thursday.

Google unveils calendar service
Hoping to beef up the underperforming online calendar market, Internet search giant Google late Wednesday introduced a calendar service notable for easy-access sharing among friends and family.
Unlike popular online calendars from AOL, Yahoo and Microsoft's MSN, Google's calendar allows multiple people to layer information, so that Mom, Dad and the kids can all see their combined events on one page.

Good Thursday morning!

Match Game: Phrase Edition

Phrase #1: Rice ______

Phrase #2: Great ______

Rules
Respond by completing each phrase above with what you think will be the most popular answer. Rules are similar to Family Feud, where every person responding with the #1 most popular answer among all entries received that day receives two points per phrase. Every person with the #2 most popular answer will receive one point. All answers must have at least two submissions to be eligible for points. In the case of a tie, both sets will receive the same point value for that phrase.

Scattergories Challenge Message Board
Several posts were added yesterday, mostly revolving over whether I should count first name "N" or last name "N" entries (or both). In a previous update, I had said that I will be going only by last name for proper names, but should this also apply to cartoon characters, many of whom don't have last names at all (or are rarely used or known)? How flexible should I be in this case? Chime in today!

Worms are Dumb!
I have a profound thought for the day: worms are really dumb. So during yesterday morning's rain, they did another Worm Normandy - Storming the Pavement. However, you'd think after seeing all the dead worms on the sidewalk from the massacre earlier in the week, they'd say to themselves, "Hmph. Perhaps I don't want to go this way after all." But nope - there they all were, crawling on the sidewalks, where many of them also met an early end.

Today’s forecast grade: A-

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with morning sunshine, temps are in the mid- to upper 40s.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: A nearly-stationary cold front is sitting over north-central Wisconsin this morning. This means a significant temperature gradient will be experienced over the state today, with northern Wisconsin having much cooler high temperatures compared to southern Wisconsin. This also means some thunderstorms will be developing later this afternoon, and we're under the slight risk category of these becoming severe according to the Storm Prediction Center.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Morning sunshine with increasing clouds later today and scattered thunderstorms developing by early this evening. High of 67 central, near 60 north but getting up to the mid- 70s south.

Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mostly early this evening. Lows mid- to upper 40s. Chance of rain this evening 70%.

Good Friday: Partly cloudy and mild, highs lower 70s central, mid- to upper 70s south.

Easter Sunday: Morning showers, then decreasing clouds in the afternoon. Cooler, highs 57-62.
Next Week’s Outlook: Another round of storms looks to come through on Tuesday, otherwise it should be a dry week with temperatures in the low to mid- 60s early in the week but eventually drifting back to the mid- to upper 50s. That's still above normal though!

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Sunshine and warmer, highs upper 80s.

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Morning fog, then partly cloudy, highs mid- 80s.
Dense fog advisory in effect until 9 am CDT this morning...
Areas of fog will reduce visibilities below 1/4 mile at times.
Motorists should drive with extreme caution and allow additional

plenty of room between you and other cars.
Conditions are expected to improve by mid morning.

Today in Evansville, Indiana: Morning fog, then sunshine and breezy, highs lower 80s.
... Patchy dense fog this morning...
Very patchy dense fog across portions of southern Illinois and the
Evansville tri state area has resulted in multiple accidents
already this morning. Drivers are urged to exercise extreme
caution while driving this morning... as otherwise clear
visibilities may go down to under a quarter mile over a very short
distance. Visibilities should improve by 9 am.

Proposed 10th Planet Shrinks Under Hubble's Gaze
An object called the 10th planet by some astronomers is not as big as previously thought.
The round world, officially catalogued as 2003 UB313, is about 1,490 miles wide with an uncertainty of 60 miles, according to new observations by the Hubble Space Telescope. Pluto is roughly 1,430 miles (2,300 kilometers) wide.
Since 2003 UB313 is 10 billion miles away not even as wide as the United States, it showed up as just 1.5 pixels in Hubble's view. But that's enough to precisely make a size measurement, astronomers said.

Are laser weapons ready for duty?
The next generation of weapons in the U.S. arsenal could be straight out of science fiction: laser beams and heat rays. And they could be ready for action before you know it.
By the end of this year, the Air Force plans to conduct a first, fully loaded test flight of its Airborne Laser, a jumbo jet packed with gear designed to shoot down enemy missiles half a world away, at the speed of light. Wisconsin Weather Update for April 11, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 12:43 PM GMT on April 11, 2006

Good Tuesday morning!

Scattergories
Another week of games start right now! And today, it's the first Scattergories game of the Spring 2006 season!

Starting Letter: N
Topic #1: Cartoon Character(s) (adj. are ok as long as it's a part of the proper name)

Topic #2: Found in a Gym/Health Club

Rules
Your job is to give me one answer to each topic above that begins with the starting letter. However, make it clever and unique, as all entries that are duplicated by someone else will not receive credit. Scoring is based on the total of unique, unchallenged answers that start with the given letter (limit of one guess per person per topic). The first word cannot be an adjective unless otherwise specified, and you can't use the same word for more than one topic during that week's game. On Wednesday, a list of all answers will be given out, and players may challenge as many entries as they wish, that they believe should not be allowed credit, on my message board. On Friday morning, I will make my decisions and all unique answers which do not have challenges accepted will receive two points each.

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with some low clouds mixed with areas of sunshine, temps are in the upper 40s to lower 50s.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: Was yesterday nice or what? A warm front passed through yesterday, and while we didn't see any precipitation from it, we did get to be under the umbrella of warmth between that and the trailing cold front which will move through tonight. Warm and mild southerly winds will give us another day of temperatures near 70, and even after the cold front moves through, we're still expecting highs in the mid- to upper 60s after that. And look out for showers and isolated thunderstorms later today and tonight. I'm thinking tomorrow might be a good day to fertilize the lawn.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Partly sunny, windy and mild. Maybe an isolated thunderstorm this afternoon south. High of 70 north and central, and lower 70s south.

Tonight: Showers and isolated thunderstorms developing. Breezy, lows low to mid- 50s. Chance of rain 90%. I may not be a Math major, but I think those are pretty good odds.

Tomorrow: Morning showers possible, then partial clearing in the afternoon. Highs mid- to upper 60s. Chance of morning rain 40%.

...Wisconsin/S 2006 tornado and severe weather awareness week is April 17-21 2006...

Governor Doyle has proclaimed April 17-21 2006 as tornado and
severe weather awareness week in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin emergency management team...in conjunction with
NOAA/S National Weather Service...has coordinated a variety of
activities for the awareness week. Everyone should educate
themselves about the danger of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms
during the awareness week.

A statewide tornado drill is scheduled for Thursday April 20 2006.
This drill is a great opportunity for you and your communities to
review and discuss your emergency plans and warning policies.

----------------------------------------------------------------
...Mock tornado drill...

The drill will start at 1 PM with a mock Tornado Watch for all of
Wisconsin...in effect through 2 PM CDT.

Between 110 PM CDT and 155 PM CDT...the 5 NWS offices that service
Wisconsin will issue mock tornado warnings...on a staggered basis.
The mock Tornado Warning issuance order will be...

Green Bay NWS office................110-115 PM CDT
Milwaukee/Sullivan NWS office.......120-125 PM CDT
La Crosse NWS office................130-135 PM CDT
Minneapolis/Chanhassen NWS office...140-145 PM CDT
Duluth NWS office...................150-155 PM CDT

The mock Tornado Watch/warning drill will end at 2 PM CDT.

In addition...the mock Tornado Watch and mock tornado warnings
will be tone-activated on the NOAA Weather Radio all-hazards network
in Wisconsin. This tone activation will occur under the required
weekly test /rwt/ identifier.

In addition...public information statements covering a variety of
tornado and severe weather concepts...will be sent on the NOAA
weather wire computer circuit on each of the five days of the
awareness week. Some of this information will be broadcast on the
NOAA Weather Radio all-hazards network.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Should severe weather be present anywhere in Wisconsin on the day
of the drill...the test watch and warnings will be postponed until
Friday April 21st with the same time schedule. If severe weather is
forecast for Friday...the drill will be canceled.

Wisconsin Weather Update for April 10, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 1:04 PM GMT on April 10, 2006

Good Morning,
This is Lisa with our weekend and baby update and I hope you all had a great weekend. We had a fun day on Saturday when we went with our friends Phil, Nicole, Adam (Phil and Nicole's child), Dave and Diane to the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame. I had never been there, so it was a fun tour for me. It was self guided so we could pretty much take as much time as we wanted to walk through it. It wasn't very busy either, so we let Adam and Bryce roam around some of the exhibits. After the tour, we did some shopping at the Packer Pro Shop, and then we had a nice dinner at Brett Favre's Steakhouse.
Sunday, we joined the YMCA. We went there a week ago on a free pass and really liked what we saw. They have several programs that we are interested in, and when Bryce gets older they have a lot of programs for children, and even a few that he can get into right away.

Bryce Update:
Not too much is new with Bryce except that he can lift himself in his crib and his pack n' play. He grabs the top of the pack n' play/crib and then puts his feet on the side and pulls himself up. Soon he'll be crawling out of there! Well, that wraps up the update, have a great week.

Bryce photos:
Eight more photos of Bryce were added from Saturday, including our first visit to the newly renovated Packers Hall of Fame. And you know how fans sitting in the first row of a hockey game will stand up and bang their hands on the glass during a game or in celebration after a victory? Well, Bryce got into it as well, banging on the TV screen right when UW won their first hockey championship since 1990. But instead of joining Bryce in celebration with the glass banging, I took a picture.

More pollution = more global warming. Less pollution = more global warming?
Air trends 'amplifying' warming
Reduced air pollution and increased water evaporation appear to be adding to man-made global warming.
Research presented at a major European science meeting adds to other evidence that cleaner air is letting more solar energy through to the Earth's surface.
Other studies show that increased water vapour in the atmosphere is reinforcing the impact of man-made greenhouse gas emissions.

Southern Wisconsin:
A band of rain will extend across much of south central and southeast Wisconsin through 9 am. This area of rain was nearly stationary...but a diminishing trend was noted near the Illinois border. The band of rain was pushing north at only 5 or 10 mph or so...and may spread into the northern portions of the Marquette... Green Lake...Fond Du Lac and Sheboygan County areas. Rainfall amounts were generally up to 1/4 inch an hour...with 1/2 inch an hour in a few of the heavier storms.

Forecast:
Now: At 8am with clouds across the state and rain showers south, temps are mostly in the lower 40s and not going much higher than that today.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: A swirling and slightly occluded frontal system hasn't moved too much over the last 24 hours, still located around eastern Nebraska. However, the warm front associated with this system is to our south, and we're getting colder air coming in from Canada with a strong northwest wind. Besides the morning rain showers south, look for a gradually clearing sky from north to south today.

Today: Cloudy and windy with morning rain showers south. Decreasing clouds later today from north to south. High of 45 central and south, and only near 40 north.

Tonight: Becoming mostly clear with decreasing wind speeds. Cold overnight with lows low to mid- 20s. Brrrr!

Saturday: Partly cloudy, highs mid- to upper 40s central, upper 40s to near 50 south. However, fear not, as warmer weather will return shortly!

Sunday: Partly sunny and warmer, highs mid- 50s central, upper 50s south.

Extended:
Monday: Partly sunny, highs 57-62.
Tuesday: Mostly cloudy and breezy with a chance of showers late. Highs 61-66. Rain chance Tuesday night 40%.
Wednesday: Morning showers, highs 59-64. By the way, ignore my comments from yesterday. I was supposed to be in Illinois most of next week for more programming training, but it has been postponed until May.

Wisconsin Weather Update for April 6, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 12:56 PM GMT on April 06, 2006

Good Thursday morning!

Mad Gab
The game that was one vote shy of being eliminated this season returns, and with a couple small surprises - three puzzles instead of two this season, and another bonus point available for the 30+ players I'm getting each game day. Enjoy!

Mad Gab #1: Sit Jerk Lock

Mad Gab #2: Hawk Hidden Us Hide

Mad Gab #3: Bill Spare Reed Oh-boy!

Bonus Points: 2, 12, 22, 32

Rules
Ignoring punctuation and word spacing, these seemingly random set of words actually make out a common phrase. Three puzzles are given and people get one point for each correct answer. One bonus point is also given out to people who respond with at least one correct answer in the order specified within that day's intro (like a DJ giving away a prize to the 8th caller). Also, if less than half of the people who respond get it correct, those who did get it right will receive an extra point.

Today is another interesting sports day! While the Brewers have off after sweeping Pittsburgh in their opening series (and their 3-0 mark makes them one of only four teams in baseball that are still undefeated), today The Masters golf tournament begins (which should look great in HD this weekend!), and tonight the University of Wisconsin Hockey team will face off in the Frozen Four in Milwaukee (the hockey equivalent of basketball's Final Four).
Last night was the last night of my bowling league, and after bowling a 228 and a 204 last week, this week was a nine-pin tap to close the season. I didn't bowl a single 9-count until the middle of the second game, but I didn't need to so much with a 231 in my first game that included 9 "natural" strikes. I ended this season with a 197 average, my best ever as a bowler.

Today’s forecast grade: C+

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with clouds, temps are either near 40 or just a few degrees above 40.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: Clouds have returned to Wisconsin, but all of the nearby radar activity is in Illinois and Iowa this morning. That will be changing shortly, especially across southern Wisconsin, as a developing low pressure system currently centered near central Nebraska moves to the east. Along with showers and a few thunderstorms, we'll also spy colder temperatures tomorrow after this system passes through. On a semi-related note, we have some Wisconsin Meteorological pride today - the current 2-day champion on Jeopardy! is a Meteorologist from Milwaukee. Go get 'em!
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Cloudy and breezy with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms developing later today, especially south. High of 54 central, mid- 50s north and mid- to upper 50s south. Rain chance 25% north, 45% central, 70% south.

Tonight: Cloudy and windy with rain, perhaps heavy at times, and again heavier and more frequent across southern Wisconsin. Lows mid- 30s. Rain chance 70% central, 90% south.

Tomorrow: More rain likely south, with a chance of rain (or even mixing with light snow!) central. Partly cloudy north, and decreasing clouds later in the day from north to south. Highs only near 40 central, mid- 40s south. Morning precip chance 30% central, 50% south.

Extended:
Saturday: Partly cloudy, highs 47-52.
Sunday: Increasing clouds, warmer, highs 53-58.
Next Week’s Outlook: A chance of rain Tuesday and again on Friday. Temperatures look to be warmer with expected highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s. However, one thing you won't be able to expect next week will be my updates. More on that tomorrow.

Through 730 am...areas of showers...and possibly an isolated thunderstorm or two...will continue to push east across the quad state region. Today’s forecast grade: A

Forecast:
Now: At 8am with bountiful sunshine, temps are in the low to mid- 30s.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: So I was looking at the forecast from the National Weather Service yesterday, and they used the word "Fair" as the main forecast word. Does that tell you anything, besides the fact that it might be ok outside that day? Usually the only times you see the word "Fair" are at summer festivals or right next to the word "Poor" on customer surveys! And yesterday seemed more than "fair" to me! As for today, high pressure stretching across the Mississippi River will give us one more day of mild, sunny weather before a new low pressure system developing in the Rocky Mountains moves in.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Morning sunshine with some afternoon clouds rolling in. Warmer with a mild high of 55 central, near 50 north and near 60 south. Or in other words..."Fair."

Tonight: Becoming cloudy and breezy. Lows upper 30s.

Tomorrow: Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms developing, with the best chance tomorrow night. Windy, highs low to mid- 50s. Chance of rain 40% during the day, 70% tomorrow night. Or in other words, not so fair.

Extended:
Friday: Morning showers, then decreasing clouds and much colder. Highs only near 39-44. That's not fair!
Saturday: Partly cloudy, highs 44-49.
Sunday: Partly sunny, warmer, highs 52-57.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, breezy, highs mid- 60s. Is it just me, or is it odd that the only place with rain in today's forecast is a desert?

Topic #2: A color that's also a popular last name

Rules

Every person with the #2 most popular answer will receive one point. Just like the TV show, all answers must have at least two submissions to be eligible for points. In the case of a tie, both sets will receive the same point value for that topic.

http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

As for today, a big ol' area of high pressure will keep the sunshine hanging around for a little while, but with a breezy northerly wind hanging around, the temperatures won't be quite where we saw them last week. The grass is slowly getting green (greener where our dog Kozmo does his thing ) and I think it's time to fertilize the lawn now and in a couple more weeks, get out the mower!

Wisconsin Weather Update for April 3, 2006.

By: HaleStorm, 12:46 PM GMT on April 03, 2006

Good Morning,
This is Lisa with our weekend and baby update, and I hope you all had a nice weekend. We didn't do much this weekend, so this update is going to focus more on Bryce.

Happy 9-Month Birthday Bryce!
Today Bryce is nine months old. Time is sure flying by quickly. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago I was in the hospital giving birth to him. He has gotten so big and he seems to get more adorable with each passing day. Bryce is already learning how to share...kind of, anyway. He'll offer you one of his toys, let you hold it with him for a couple seconds, then he thinks enough of that and quickly swipes it back. Occasionally Bryce will let you actually keep the toy all to yourself, but most of the time while he may offer it to you, he has no intention of letting you actually keep the toy.

Pool Fun at the YMCA..
Yesterday we took Bryce swimming for his first time. We went to the YMCA and took a tour, then went swimming with Bryce in the big pool. Bryce has been enjoying his baths now that we sit him up instead of laying him down, so we wanted to see what he would think of splashing around in a much bigger environment. He didn't know what to make of it at first, but he did very well. Steve and I both agreed that while he wasn't necessarily overjoyed with the water, he didn't seem to mind it. He barely cried at all in the pool, and for the most part he just looked around. He clung to us, but he didn't act afraid of the water. We plan on taking him back soon, and we'll see how he reacts next time. Well, that wraps up the update and I hope you all have a great week.

Today’s forecast grade: C

Important Weather Statement: (Courtesy of the National Weather Service)
Northern Wisconsin and Fox Cities:
Wind Advisory in effect until 3 PM CDT this afternoon...
Strong northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 to 45 mph
will affect the region during the morning and early afternoon
hours... then gradually diminish.

A Wind Advisory means that strong winds are expected. The wind
will make driving difficult... especially for high profile
vehicles... so motorists should use caution.

Southern Wisconsin:
Wind Advisory in effect until 3 PM CDT this afternoon...
Strong northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph are
expected. The winds will slowly subside later this afternoon as
high pressure builds in from the west.

A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 30 mph or
greater are expected... or wind gusts of 45 mph are expected.
Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for
high profile vehicles. Secure loose items in the yard such as
lawn furniture and garbage cans... beware of fallen tree limbs on
roads. Use caution while outdoors.

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with clouds across most of the state and scattered rain showers east, temps are in the upper 30s to near 40.
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/wi/hourly.html

Synopsis: Today is a pretty exciting day! Not only is it Bryce's 9-month birthday, but it's baseball's opening day, the NCAA Tournament championship is tonight, and NBC's airing two hours of Deal or No Deal tonight. How great is that? As for the forecast, you will start noticing a slight difference to how they are written - my good friend Clair moved up to Rhinelander over the weekend, and as a result, you'll start seeing "north" in addition to "central" and "south" in today's forecast.

And speaking of today's forecast, as you already probably know, it's going to be windy! A strong area of low pressure is centered over southern Lake Michigan, and the strong pressure gradient (change) between this and an area of high pressure in the northern Plains will make it quite windy over the next 12-24 hours. As the low begins to move away, look for the clouds and rain to do the same, and hopefully by this afternoon we'll start seeing some sunshine.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Today: Morning showers east, then decreasing clouds by this afternoon. Windy all day, high of 45 central, also mid- 40s south, and upper 30s to near 40 north.

Tonight: Mostly clear and not as windy. Lows mid- 20s.

Tomorrow: Mostly sunny, highs upper 40s central, near 50 south.

Extended:
Wednesday: Partly cloudy and warmer, highs 54-59.
Thursday: Cloudy and windy with showers and thunderstorms developing. Highs 51-56. Rain chance 50%.
Friday: Cloudy and windy with more showers. Highs 51-56. Rain chance 60%.
Saturday: Partly cloudy, highs 49-54.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy, maybe a shower, highs 51-56. Rain chance 20%. And it may be too early to mention this, but the weather models are expecting a nice warmup for next week.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Clouds, breezy, isolated showers tonight, highs upper 70s.

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Maybe an evening thunderstorm, windy, highs upper 70s but near 90 inland!

http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USSC0155

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Isolated afternoon thunderstorms, breezy, highs mid- 80s.
