Wisconsin Weather Update

Weather Update for June 30, 2005.

Good Thursday morning!

Well, the little guy is now five days overdue, and it's not making mommy very happy! Daddy's becoming rather frustrated as well, but I think mom is especially annoyed with his lack of appearance. Today is the last day if he wants to be a June baby, so it's now or never!

Yesterday's Wheel of Fortune puzzle was "Gone Haywire," which seems to accurately describe our week so far. I don't have the time to tally the points this week, but here's a Mad Gab just for fun. The answer is at the very bottom of this email:

Today’s forecast grade: A-


Forecast:
Now: At 7am with showers and thunderstorms in Illinois and Michigan and clearing skies in Wisconsin, temps are near 70 central and the lower 70s south.

Synopsis: We had some severe thunderstorms roll through Wisconsin early this morning, which generated strong winds, hail, heavy rainfall and quite a bit of lightning. The storms that moved through the Fox Valley this morning were not severe, but I did get woken up by my weather radio siren at 1 a.m. when the Storm Prediction Center issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. Even though all the precipitation is now to our south and east, the cold front still hasn't moved through, which means one more day of warmth and humidity is in store for us.

Today: Partly cloudy and windy, high of 84 central, upper 80s south. Dew points mid- to upper 60s this morning but dropping later today.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, still breezy, lows 55-60.

Tomorrow: Becoming mostly sunny and finally cooler and less humid as high pressure moves into the state, highs low to mid- 70s.

Extended:
Saturday: Mostly sunny, a great day for Rhythm and Booms in Madison, highs upper 70s to near 80.
Sunday: Maybe a shower north and west, and arriving here late, highs near 80. Rain chance Sunday night 40%. The Milwaukee fireworks will probably not get rained out, but there's always that chance.
Next Week's Outlook: A chance of thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday, then pretty much dry with highs in the low to mid- 80s Monday but upper 70s to near 80 after that.

Forecast:
Now: At 8am with sunshine south and a thin layer of clouds central and north, temps are in the mid- 60s central and mid- 70s near the Illinois border.

Synopsis: A frontal boundary stretches across northern Illinois this morning, but all of the fun showers and thunderstorms are still off to our west, in the Dakotas and western Minnesota and Iowa, near a strong area of low pressure. These will eventually get here late today, and when they do, they might pack a punch!

Today: Hazy sunshine this morning with increasing clouds this afternoon and thunderstorms developing around sunset. Look for cooler temperatures central as we're on the cool side of the front, but southern Wisconsin may see warmer temperatures again with the front slowly hovering north. High of 79 central, mid- 80s south. Dew points in the 60s central (somewhat humid), near 70 south (rather humid).

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms developing this evening and continuing overnight. We are under the slight risk category for severe weather, but western Wisconsin is under the moderate risk category. Becoming breezy with lows upper 60s to near 70. Rain chance 60%.

Scattered thunderstorms were out over Lake Michigan east and southeast of Kenosha. They were moving southeast at 25 mph. Showers and a few thunderstorms may push into far western areas west of Madison later this morning.

Now: At 7am with some hazy sunshine east and more clouds elsewhere, temps are mostly in the mid- 60s central and near 70 south.

Synopsis: A slow-moving cold front is still in northwestern Wisconsin, eastern Minnesota and western Iowa, spreading showers and thunderstorms ahead of it across much of Iowa and parts of southwestern Wisconsin. Because it's moving slower than originally anticipated, look for more hot and humid weather with scattered thunderstorms, some possibly severe, over the next couple days.

Today: Some hazy sunshine early this morning but becoming mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing later today. There is a slight risk for severe thunderstorms both today and tomorrow. Very warm and humid with a high of 88 central, near 90 south. Dew points 65-70 (rather humid). Weather Update for June 27, 2005.

Good Monday morning,
This is Lisa with our weekend update, and I hope you all had a great weekend. Our weekend was fairly uneventful. There is no baby news yet, other than the fact that I lost the mucus plug yesterday, which can come out anytime up to two weeks before the baby is born. Apparently baby Hale is taking his time to make his entrance into the world. Saturday and Sunday we spent some time with my father-in-law and step mother-in-law while they were in town for my step brother-in-law Andy's soccer games. We spent the rest of weekend watching movies, and catching up on household chores. Well that wraps up the weekend, have a great week.

Synopsis: A cold front is just beginning to enter western Minnesota, and showers and thunderstorms are spreading across eastern Minnesota at this hour. Look for these to move through Wisconsin later today and continuing through tomorrow. Ahead of the cold front, a strong southerly breeze will push very warm and humid temperatures into our region, but we should cool off after the front moves through.

Today: Hazy, breezy, hot and humid with a chance of thunderstorms by this evening. High of 91 central, lower 90s south. Dew points lower 70s (quite humid). Heat index values may near 95-100 this afternoon. Rain chance before sunset 25%.

Synopsis: A cold front is currently located across far northwestern Wisconsin and southern Minnesota. This thing's going to move through later today, generating a line of showers and thunderstorms, some of which may be severe. Look for one more day of hot, humid weather ahead of the cold front before cooler temperatures move in behind the front for this weekend.

Today: Some sunshine this morning, then becoming mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing by later this afternoon. Synopsis: A warm front will move through the state of Wisconsin today, and even though all the precipitation looks to have stayed in northern Illinois and Lake Superior, we're still going to get the stronger southwest flow which will bring us breezy, hot and humid conditions over the next couple of days. If you're going to be outside, drink plenty of fluids!

Today: Partly sunny, breezy, and becoming hot and humid. High of 91 central, low to mid- 90s south, dew points rising through the 60s (somewhat humid), heat index values 95-100 this afternoon.

Tonight: Partly cloudy and muggy overnight, lows near 70.

Now: At 8am with sunshine, temps are mostly in the upper 60s.

Synopsis: Yesterday we had the Summer Solstice and a Full Moon on the same day, so I figured that would start Lisa's labor for sure! But alas, no such luck. Today's forecast is going to be so good it'll be like knowing the question to the Final Jeopardy answer, then watching all three contestants get it wrong. (I got to enjoy that rare moment with yesterday's episode).
Anyway, high pressure in southern Ontario will give us another day of sunshine, and the front that came through yesterday will cool things off briefly before the warmest temperatures of the season arrive tomorrow.

Today: Mostly sunny and very pleasant today. High of 82, dew points in the 50s (comfortable).

Good Tuesday morning!

Barometric Babies
So yesterday I got this email from my mother-in-law Nia:
"A guy that works here in my office told me that he has a sister that works in the OB dept at St. Mary's in Madison. She said that every time a front comes through there would be lots of women going into labor. He said it could be the pressure changes."
Well, interestingly enough, Lisa was talking to a nurse yesterday and she even brought up the fact that the hospital was very busy that night, with the reason likely having something to do with recent barometric pressure changes. I guess it does make some sense...along with people that can predict the weather with their knees.


Family Feud Tuesday
Well, first place is pretty much wrapped up with a pretty bow on top, but with a tie for second place, today's game may very well decide it. Remember that after Lisa goes into labor (which has not happened yet), I will be taking a couple weeks off, but will begin again with a new season and resetting everyone's scores to zero.

Weather Update for June 20, 2005.

Happy Monday,
This is Lisa with our weekend update, and I hope you all had a great weekend. I know you all want a baby update, and no we have not had the baby yet. My actual due date is June 25, so I technically still have a week yet. Maybe he'll come sometime this week, or maybe he'll be on time. Who knows, he's going to come when he wants to, but there's also the possibility that he could come late. Once I'd hit a week past my due date, my doctor will induce me, so they won't let me go later than one week overdue. As far our weekend, it was fairly busy, but we got a lot accomplished around the house. Friday we stayed home, caught up on Tivo'd shows, and relaxed. Saturday morning, my mom and I went to some rummage sales while Steve did some chores around the house. We found a lot of great deals on baby stuff, and it was fun too. Saturday afternoon, I got a bunch of chores done while Steve went golfing with our friends Jason and Nicole. Then Saturday evening the four of us enjoyed a tasty Italian dinner at Victoria's. Victoria's is still one of my favorite restaurants in the Fox Valley. Also, a belated Happy Birthday wish to our friend Clair and my sister-in-law Katie, who were born just hours apart on the same day. I hope you two had a great day! Also, a belated Happy Father's Day to all the "Dads" on this list. Sunday, I ran some errands in the morning, and then we went mini golfing at Badger Sports Park with my mom. After mini golfing, we went to Culver's for ice cream treats, since we were so hot and winded. Well, that wraps up our weekend. This morning, Steve got up early to fertilize the lawn, and now here we are writing this morning's update. I hope you all have a great week.

1. They have an easy-to-use blog template, which will keep an online archive of every weather update. Miss a day of fun? You will be able to read every update since June 10, 2005 online!

TGIF!

So last night, in one of our last evenings of freedom, we went to Waterfest in Oshkosh with our friends Jason and Nicole to go see the swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy play. They put on an outstanding show, we were really close to the stage so we had a great view of the band, and we had a great time.

Also - why should Lisa have all the fun? My coworkers threw me a surprise baby shower yesterday over the lunch hour, so I also got to experience the joy of opening all sorts of good baby stuff, and of course the customary gag gifts. Many of you are on this list, and I wanted to publicly say thanks for everything. You guys were really generous and it was much appreciated!

Synopsis: The low pressure system that has given us scattered thunderstorms over the last week and a half has finally moved east, currently just north of Toronto. With high pressure slowly moving into the Midwest, we can expect the clouds and winds to eventually decrease as the day progresses.

Today: Cloudy and windy with an isolated shower possible, but look for some clearing and decreasing winds late in the day. With a strong, cool northerly wind, you'd think autumn is near, but I'm still expecting a high of 69 and warmer temperatures over the next few days. Rain chance 30%.

Synopsis: Well, yesterday I warned about the severe weather threat, and wouldn't you know it, at around 3:45pm we were evacuated to the basement because of a tornado warning. Luckily all we had up here was a brief tornado touchdown to our west and some flooding around our area (there was 2.8" of rain in my rain gauge when I got home last night!)
As for today, an area of low pressure near Minneapolis is finally moving to the east, meaning that we can expect breezy conditions with scattered showers continuing over the next 24 hours.

Today: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, but the main severe weather threat is now off to our east. Windy with a cooler high of only 73, dew points in the upper 60s early but dropping later today (still rather humid when you note the cooler high temperature today). Rain chance 70%. Weather Update for June 13, 2005.

Good Morning and happy Monday,
This is Lisa with our weekend update and I hope you all had a great weekend. Our weekend was rather busy, but we still had some time to relax as well. Friday night we went to a Timber Rattler baseball game with a big group of our friends. However, we only got to watch about an inning and a half of baseball before it starting downpouring. They ended up calling off the game, but we now get to use our tickets and go to any regular season game. While we were sitting in the parking lot trying to get out, we heard from my little sister-in-law Kelley and Meteorologist in training, that there was severe weather in the area (she even said the storms were "training"!) It turns out that there was a tornado warning for Calumet and Winnebago counties and a waterspout had been sited over Lake Winnebago near Oshkosh for the second straight day, and it was headed our way! We finally got out of the TimberRattlers parking lot, raced home as quickly as we could and headed for the basement. Steve of course was checking out the radar and the clouds outside. We ended up having quite a storm, but no tornadoes near us. Afterwards we had a great fireworks show courtesy of mother nature, with silent lightning strikes visible way in the distance several hours after the storm came through.

Saturday was a busy day for us. We started out the day by going to the Menasha Fire Dept. to have our baby car seats inspected. It was a really good idea that we did too, because when we read the instruction manual and tried to put them in ourselves, we both put them in incorrectly. We also learned a lot, and it's a free service to the community. We learned the statistics in Lamaze class that 4 out of 5 car seats are used incorrectly. That scared me, so we decided it was pretty important to have the inspection done, and I'm really glad we did. Then Saturday afternoon we took Kozmo to Dog Party 6. We had a good time, and Kozmo especially enjoyed the freedom from his leash and being able to run free. He also really enjoyed being around all the other dogs and the people. I'm not sure who he enjoyed more, all the dogs or all the people that gave him attention. At one point Liz, the party hostess, threw a whole bunch of doggie treats on the ground, but Kozmo wasn't much interested in them. We left a few hours later because the heat was getting to me and I was starting to feel uncomfortable, but we all had a good time. We were both feeling kind of sluggish due to heat so we just relaxed when we got home.

Sunday was a busy day around the house for us. We also had to run errands to Home Depot and the mall, and that took up most of our day, but then we got to relax in the evening. Steve plans on finally fertilizing the lawn this week, now that we have a riding lawn mower that makes mowing our big lawn a lot easier. Well, that wraps up our weekend, have a great week.


One thing that Lisa didn't mention was that while we were waiting to see if the storm would clear during the rain delay, our friend John had brought his daughter Katelyn and a neighbor's son Spencer. Well, both of the kids were frightened by the storm, as would be expected from little children. In trying to calm Spencer down, I started telling him about my Meteorology knowledge, discussing the storm, how "safe" we were, and throwing technical terms at the little boy so that it would overwhelm and perhaps calm him down. At one point, though, he had what was perhaps the quote of the year, when he looked at me and yelled, "You're no Pete Petoniak!" Ahhh...too true! If I had a nickel for every time I heard that...

Forecast:
Now: At 8am with a line of showers and isolated thunderstorms in west-central Wisconsin and quite a bit more back in Minnesota, Iowa, and the Dakotas, temperatures are already near 70 central and the low to mid- 70s south.

Synopsis: That wacky stationary frontal boundary still lies across Highway 10 in central Wisconsin. However, the stationary low pressure system that has been sitting over the Dakotas for the last week is finally going to start moving east again, which will likely generate a severe weather outbreak across Iowa, Illinois and parts of Wisconsin.

Today: Some sunshine early but increasing clouds with showers and thunderstorms developing this afternoon and evening, some of which may very well be severe. Parts of Wisconsin are under a moderate risk of severe weather today, including a 15% chance of large tornadoes developing within 25 miles of any given point. A quick convection and vertical wind shear profile review from Bufkit showed the chance of not just ordinary thunderstorm cells developing today, like we've had over the past week, but perhaps multicells and even supercells developing, especially in southwestern Wisconsin. Supercells are the types of storms that can develop the large tornadoes you sometimes see on the Weather Channel, and are nothing to laugh at. Remember that the safest place to be during a severe thunderstorm is not next to a power pole, no matter how cool the sounds emanating from it may be. High of 82 central, mid- 80s south, dew points near 70 (rather uncomfortable). Rain chance 50%.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms, and again, some of these may be severe with strong winds, large hail and possibly very cool-looking tornadoes. Lows low to mid- 60s. Rain chance 60%.

Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy with showers and isolated thunderstorms. There is a slight risk of these thunderstorms becoming severe, but I think that today is the primary threatening day. Cooler with highs low to mid- 70s. Rain chance 60%.

Extended:
Wednesday: Maybe a morning shower, then decreasing clouds. Highs only upper 60s to near 70. Rain chance 30%.
Thursday: Mostly sunny, highs near 70 central, lower 70s south.
Friday: Mostly sunny, highs lower 70s central, mid- 70s south.

Weather Update for June 10, 2005.

TGIF!

So get this - last night I'm playing tennis in my weekly league at Springfield Park, the park a couple blocks from our house. During the second set, I see Lisa waddling over! She walked all the way from our house to the park to tell me that my weather radio went off and that there was a tornado warning just to our south. Sure enough, a tornado was reported on the ground just a few miles away from our house, over northern Lake Winnebago and eventually hitting northwestern Calumet county, about a 10-minute car ride away. I didn't see anything in the news wires about it, so it must not have done much damage, but I did take a few pictures of the slick-looking wall cloud that you could see from our backyard. I'll post those this weekend.

Synopsis: That wacky nearly-stationary frontal boundary is still hovering over Wisconsin this morning, but it's now near south-central Wisconsin, as opposed to north-central Wisconsin, where it's been the last few days. With a southwest flow continuing, look for more of the same tropical weather through this weekend and into early next week.

Today: Partly sunny with scattered thunderstorms developing later today. The Storm Prediction Center has put us once again in the slight risk category for severe weather today and tomorrow. High of 83 central, mid- to upper 80s south, dew points near 70 (rather humid). Rain chance 35%.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Lows mid- to upper 60s. Rain chance 45%.
