Wisconsin Weather Update

Weather Update for June 30, 2005.

By: HaleStorm, 7:50 AM CDT on June 30, 2005

Good Thursday morning!

Well, the little guy is now five days overdue, and it's not making mommy very happy! Daddy's becoming rather frustrated as well, but I think mom is especially annoyed with his lack of appearance. Today is the last day if he wants to be a June baby, so it's now or never!

Yesterday's Wheel of Fortune puzzle was "Gone Haywire," which seems to accurately describe our week so far. I don't have the time to tally the points this week, but here's a Mad Gab just for fun. The answer is at the very bottom of this email:

Aim Other Ranch Howled

Today’s forecast grade: A-

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with showers and thunderstorms in Illinois and Michigan and clearing skies in Wisconsin, temps are near 70 central and the lower 70s south.

Synopsis: We had some severe thunderstorms roll through Wisconsin early this morning, which generated strong winds, hail, heavy rainfall and quite a bit of lightning. The storms that moved through the Fox Valley this morning were not severe, but I did get woken up by my weather radio siren at 1 a.m. when the Storm Prediction Center issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. Even though all the precipitation is now to our south and east, the cold front still hasn't moved through, which means one more day of warmth and humidity is in store for us.

Today: Partly cloudy and windy, high of 84 central, upper 80s south. Dew points mid- to upper 60s this morning but dropping later today.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, still breezy, lows 55-60.

Tomorrow: Becoming mostly sunny and finally cooler and less humid as high pressure moves into the state, highs low to mid- 70s.

Extended:
Saturday: Mostly sunny, a great day for Rhythm and Booms in Madison, highs upper 70s to near 80.
Sunday: Maybe a shower north and west, and arriving here late, highs near 80. Rain chance Sunday night 40%. The Milwaukee fireworks will probably not get rained out, but there's always that chance.
Next Week's Outlook: A chance of thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday, then pretty much dry with highs in the low to mid- 80s Monday but upper 70s to near 80 after that.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Sunshine, maybe some areas of smoke from the wildfires not too far away, highs just a few over 100.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NV/Henderson.html

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Scattered showers and thunderstorms developing, highs lower 80s.
Heat index values 100 to 105 degrees away from the coast this afternoon...
http://www.wunderground.com/US/SC/Hilton_Head_Island.html

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Isolated showers, becoming breezy, highs low to mid- 90s.
Through 9 am...isolated showers will continue to develop near the coast and move north at 10 mph. Rainfall amounts will be light...generally around a tenth of an inch.

TGIW!

I don't have the time to tally the results and count the points this week, but here is a WoF game you can play just for fun (as opposed to before!). No need to submit your answers - just give yourself a pat on the back if you get it right.
Also, I did put a few news article headlines below the forecast with a little help from my readers.
Enjoy!

Forecast:
Now: At 8am with sunshine south and a thin layer of clouds central and north, temps are in the mid- 60s central and mid- 70s near the Illinois border.

Synopsis: A frontal boundary stretches across northern Illinois this morning, but all of the fun showers and thunderstorms are still off to our west, in the Dakotas and western Minnesota and Iowa, near a strong area of low pressure. These will eventually get here late today, and when they do, they might pack a punch!

Today: Hazy sunshine this morning with increasing clouds this afternoon and thunderstorms developing around sunset. Look for cooler temperatures central as we're on the cool side of the front, but southern Wisconsin may see warmer temperatures again with the front slowly hovering north. High of 79 central, mid- 80s south. Dew points in the 60s central (somewhat humid), near 70 south (rather humid).

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms developing this evening and continuing overnight. We are under the slight risk category for severe weather, but western Wisconsin is under the moderate risk category. Becoming breezy with lows upper 60s to near 70. Rain chance 60%.

Tomorrow: Maybe a morning shower, otherwise decreasing clouds, still breezy, highs lower 80s central, mid- to upper 80s south. Morning rain chance 30%.

Extended:
Friday: Morning clouds, then becoming partly cloudy and cooler, highs low to mid- 70s.

TGIT!

I will be driving Lisa to De Pere for work until her baby is delivered, so because of this, there will be no games and no news articles this week. But there will be a hot, steamy forecast!

Today’s forecast grade: B

Weather Statement: (Courtesy of the National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
Scattered thunderstorms were out over Lake Michigan east and southeast of Kenosha. They were moving southeast at 25 mph. Showers and a few thunderstorms may push into far western areas west of Madison later this morning.

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with some hazy sunshine east and more clouds elsewhere, temps are mostly in the mid- 60s central and near 70 south.

Synopsis: A slow-moving cold front is still in northwestern Wisconsin, eastern Minnesota and western Iowa, spreading showers and thunderstorms ahead of it across much of Iowa and parts of southwestern Wisconsin. Because it's moving slower than originally anticipated, look for more hot and humid weather with scattered thunderstorms, some possibly severe, over the next couple days.

Today: Some hazy sunshine early this morning but becoming mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing later today. There is a slight risk for severe thunderstorms both today and tomorrow. Very warm and humid with a high of 88 central, near 90 south. Dew points 65-70 (rather humid). Heat index values 95-100 this afternoon. Rain chance 50%.

Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Lows around the mid- 60s. Rain chance 50%.

Tomorrow: More of the same - very warm and humid with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs mid- 80s central, upper 80s to near 90 south. Dew points near 70 (rather humid). Rain chance 50%.

Extended:
Thursday: Decreasing clouds and cooler, highs lower 80s.
Friday: Partly cloudy, highs upper 70s to near 80.
Saturday: Increasing clouds, highs upper 70s central, lower 80s south.
Sunday: Maybe a thunderstorm, highs near 80 central, lower 80s south. Rain chance 30%.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Partly cloudy and breezy with an isolated thunderstorm possible. Highs upper 90s.

Weather Update for June 27, 2005.

By: HaleStorm, 8:20 AM CDT on June 27, 2005

Good Monday morning,
This is Lisa with our weekend update, and I hope you all had a great weekend. Our weekend was fairly uneventful. There is no baby news yet, other than the fact that I lost the mucus plug yesterday, which can come out anytime up to two weeks before the baby is born. Apparently baby Hale is taking his time to make his entrance into the world. Saturday and Sunday we spent some time with my father-in-law and step mother-in-law while they were in town for my step brother-in-law Andy's soccer games. We spent the rest of weekend watching movies, and catching up on household chores. Well that wraps up the weekend, have a great week.

Note: as baby news breaks, I will be updating our baby Web page with information. Check it out by clicking the URL below!

Today’s forecast grade: B

Forecast:
Now: At 8am with hazy sunshine, temps are in the mid- 70s.

Synopsis: A cold front is just beginning to enter western Minnesota, and showers and thunderstorms are spreading across eastern Minnesota at this hour. Look for these to move through Wisconsin later today and continuing through tomorrow. Ahead of the cold front, a strong southerly breeze will push very warm and humid temperatures into our region, but we should cool off after the front moves through.

Today: Hazy, breezy, hot and humid with a chance of thunderstorms by this evening. High of 91 central, lower 90s south. Dew points lower 70s (quite humid). Heat index values may near 95-100 this afternoon. Rain chance before sunset 25%.

Tonight: Humid with scattered showers and thunderstorms, lows upper 60s to near 70. Rain chance 40%. We are in the slight risk category for severe thunderstorms.

Tomorrow: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, highs mid- 80s. Rain chance 30%, as the models aren't in any sort of agreement over what's going to happen.

Extended:
Wednesday: Partly sunny and becoming windy with more showers and thunderstorms developing late, highs near 80 central, low to mid- 80s south. Rain chance Wednesday night 40%. There is a slight risk of these becoming severe as well.
Thursday: Maybe a morning thundershower, highs upper 70s to near 80. Morning rain chance 30%.
Friday: Partly cloudy, highs upper 70s.
Saturday: Thunderstorms developing late in the day, highs upper 70s. Rain chance 30%.
Sunday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, highs mid- 70s. Rain chance 30%.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Sunshine, highs near 100.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NV/Henderson.html

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Breezy at times with scattered thunderstorms, highs lower 80s.
Showers and a few thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage and intensity across parts of southeastern South Carolina through 10 am. Most of the initial development should occur along and to the west of the Interstate 95 corridor. A few of the storms will produce very heavy rain as they move off to the north. The immediate coast...including the beaches should remain dry.

TGIF!

Mad Gab Answers
19 people played yesterday, and apparently, the first one was a repeat. I can't remember which ones I have/haven't used before, so you'll see duplicates every now and then. But hopefully I won't have duplicates for BOTH games in the same week.

Puzzle #1 (18/19): Kitten Hurl East Heart =
Get an early start

Puzzle #2 (12/19): Row Stem Harsh Mell Hose =
Roasting Marshmallows
Note: Because the clue was a little goofy, I gave credit to both "roasting" and "roasted," but not if you put just "roast." The "eh" sounding syllable of "stem" required something between roast and marsh.

Bonus Points:
9: Clair (9:15am)
19: Harry (10:08pm)

Winter/Spring 2005 Point Standings (30 people played this week)
The top three players this season will receive prizes!
This season will run from January 4 until whenever our baby is born (expected date is tomorrow!)
If you would like your city/state listed next to your name, send me an email with the information!
Please verify your point total for accuracy.

Nobody was able to get all eight regular points this week, but seven people got seven points, and we still have a tie for 2nd place! If the baby doesn't come out before Tuesday, not only will there be an unhappy mother, but more games will be played!

Match Game Debate
I have decided to combine Proctologist/Doctor/Brain Surgeon into one grouping, which puts these three answers into a tie for 1st place last week, and those three people will receive four points for their answer. I will adjust the scoring in tomorrow's update. Thanks to all who debated the topic!

Now: At 7am with scattered clouds and breezy conditions, temps are in the mid- 60s east and already the low to mid- 70s west.

If you're going to be outside, drink plenty of fluids!

Today: Partly sunny, breezy, and becoming hot and humid. High of 91 central, low to mid- 90s south, dew points rising through the 60s (somewhat humid), heat index values 95-100 this afternoon.

Tonight: Partly cloudy and muggy overnight, lows near 70.

Wheel of Fortune Wednesday
Per the recent poll results, I will not be doing the preview days anymore, so here are two puzzles available for one point each. Look for a slightly different way to play this game next season.

Used Letters: RSTLNE CFYA

Puzzle #2:
L _ _ E
S _ _ W _ L _ E R

Bonus Points: 9, 19, 29

Match Game Debate
Should I have combined Proctologist, Doctor and Brain Surgeon last week, giving these three entries a tie for first place and four more points? Responses so far:

"I do agree, if you're going to put Crash Test Dummy/Driver/Analyzer and Pyro/Bomb Technician/Dynamite Worker in the same categories, technically Proctologist/Doctor/Brain Surgeon are all kinds of doctors, and should be awarded four points just like the other categories were."

"And no, proctologist and brain surgeon are not the same unless you are a butthead."

Today is last day to chime in. Make your voice read!

Today’s forecast grade: A

Forecast:
Now: At 8am with sunshine, temps are mostly in the upper 60s.

Synopsis: Yesterday we had the Summer Solstice and a Full Moon on the same day, so I figured that would start Lisa's labor for sure! But alas, no such luck. Today's forecast is going to be so good it'll be like knowing the question to the Final Jeopardy answer, then watching all three contestants get it wrong. (I got to enjoy that rare moment with yesterday's episode).
Anyway, high pressure in southern Ontario will give us another day of sunshine, and the front that came through yesterday will cool things off briefly before the warmest temperatures of the season arrive tomorrow.

Today: Mostly sunny and very pleasant today. High of 82, dew points in the 50s (comfortable).

Tonight: Becoming mostly cloudy and breezy with an isolated shower or thunderstorm possible. Lows lower 60s, rain chance 20%. Notice that as of today, the days are getting shorter, meaning that it's all downhill from here! It'll be snowing before you know it!

Tomorrow: Partly sunny, hot, humid and breezy with an isolated thunderstorm possible. Highs upper 80s to near 90 central, lower 90s south, dew points climbing through the 60s (somewhat humid), rain chance 20%. Did you know that the last time Green Bay hit 90 degrees was July 3, 2003?

Extended:
Friday: Still hot and humid with a better chance of showers and thunderstorms, highs upper 80s to near 90, dew points upper 60s to near 70 (rather humid). Rain chance 50%.
Saturday: Partly cloudy and much cooler, highs mid- 70s.
Sunday: Partly cloudy, highs upper 70s to near 80, and next week looks like 80s again.

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Maybe an isolated afternoon storm, otherwise partly cloudy, highs low to mid- 80s.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/SC/Hilton_Head_Island.html

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Sunshine and becoming breezy, highs lower 90s. Ozone Action Day, surprise surprise.

Weather Update for June 21, 2005.

By: HaleStorm, 7:57 AM CDT on June 21, 2005

Good Tuesday morning!

Barometric Babies
So yesterday I got this email from my mother-in-law Nia:
"A guy that works here in my office told me that he has a sister that works in the OB dept at St. Mary's in Madison. She said that every time a front comes through there would be lots of women going into labor. He said it could be the pressure changes."
Well, interestingly enough, Lisa was talking to a nurse yesterday and she even brought up the fact that the hospital was very busy that night, with the reason likely having something to do with recent barometric pressure changes. I guess it does make some sense...along with people that can predict the weather with their knees.

Family Feud Tuesday
Well, first place is pretty much wrapped up with a pretty bow on top, but with a tie for second place, today's game may very well decide it. Remember that after Lisa goes into labor (which has not happened yet), I will be taking a couple weeks off, but will begin again with a new season and resetting everyone's scores to zero.

Today’s forecast grade: A-

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with a cloud/sun mix, temps are in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

Synopsis: At 1:46 a.m. this morning, the Summer Solstice occurred. This is when the sun's apparent annual path is displaced farthest north from the earth's Equator. Can you believe we've had all this warm weather and summer is just beginning today! Speaking of today, we have a weak cold front moving through the state, but all the precipitation from it is either near Mackinaw, Michigan or eastern Nebraska.

Today: Partly sunny and warm, high of 84 central, upper 80s south. Dew points in the 60s (somewhat humid). Don't be surprised if a few places in southern Wisconsin break 90 again!

Tonight: Partly cloudy with maybe an isolated thunderstorm in southwestern Wisconsin. Lows near 60.

Tomorrow: Sunshine east, a few more clouds west, and maybe another isolated thunderstorm south and west. Highs upper 70s to near 80 central, lower 80s south.

Extended:
Thursday: Partly cloudy and becoming warm and humid. Highs mid- 80s central, upper 80s to near 90 south!
Friday: Maybe a thunderstorm, highs mid- 80s. Rain chance 30%.
Saturday: Partly cloudy, highs upper 70s.
Sunday: Partly cloudy, highs near 80.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Partly cloudy with an isolated storm possible, highs near 104.

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Partly cloudy with an isolated afternoon storm possible, but not likely, highs lower 80s.

http://www.wunderground.com/US/TX/League_City.html
http://www.wunderground.com/US/TX/Pearland.html

Today in Georgetown, Kentucky: Fog, then partly cloudy, highs mid- 80s.
Patchy fog will be possible across parts of southern Indiana and central Kentucky early this Tuesday morning. Visibilities may briefly drop to below one mile...particularly in valley and river bottom locations. As of 730 am EDT...Huntingburg reported three- quarters of a mile visibility...Russell Springs and Campbellsville one and a half. Any fog would likely dissipate by 9 am EDT (8 am cdt).

Weather Update for June 20, 2005.

By: HaleStorm, 7:42 AM CDT on June 20, 2005

Happy Monday,
This is Lisa with our weekend update, and I hope you all had a great weekend. I know you all want a baby update, and no we have not had the baby yet. My actual due date is June 25, so I technically still have a week yet. Maybe he'll come sometime this week, or maybe he'll be on time. Who knows, he's going to come when he wants to, but there's also the possibility that he could come late. Once I'd hit a week past my due date, my doctor will induce me, so they won't let me go later than one week overdue. As far our weekend, it was fairly busy, but we got a lot accomplished around the house. Friday we stayed home, caught up on Tivo'd shows, and relaxed. Saturday morning, my mom and I went to some rummage sales while Steve did some chores around the house. We found a lot of great deals on baby stuff, and it was fun too. Saturday afternoon, I got a bunch of chores done while Steve went golfing with our friends Jason and Nicole. Then Saturday evening the four of us enjoyed a tasty Italian dinner at Victoria's. Victoria's is still one of my favorite restaurants in the Fox Valley. Also, a belated Happy Birthday wish to our friend Clair and my sister-in-law Katie, who were born just hours apart on the same day. I hope you two had a great day! Also, a belated Happy Father's Day to all the "Dads" on this list. Sunday, I ran some errands in the morning, and then we went mini golfing at Badger Sports Park with my mom. After mini golfing, we went to Culver's for ice cream treats, since we were so hot and winded. Well, that wraps up our weekend. This morning, Steve got up early to fertilize the lawn, and now here we are writing this morning's update. I hope you all have a great week.

New Web Host
If you come out to my Wisconsin Weather Update Web site (www.wisconsinweatherupdate.com), you will notice a significant change. The home page and my weather photos are now hosted exclusively on Weather Underground. I did this for three reasons:

1. They have an easy-to-use blog template, which will keep an online archive of every weather update. Miss a day of fun? You will be able to read every update since June 10, 2005 online!
2. At the bottom of every update, there is a Comments link where you can leave a message about that day's update. Every day's update will have a new message board thread available!
3. By having my weather photos stored on Weather Underground, they are available to a greater weather community, and you can even rate each of my pictures on a scale from 1-10 (and compare it to the community's rankings)!

My other pages, like the About My Weather Updates, Baby Info, Family Photos, etc., will still be hosted on Lutherans Online, the site I administer at work, and can be accessed by clicking the links on the right side of my new home page.

Weather Update for June 17, 2005.

By: HaleStorm, 8:29 AM CDT on June 17, 2005

TGIF!

So last night, in one of our last evenings of freedom, we went to Waterfest in Oshkosh with our friends Jason and Nicole to go see the swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy play. They put on an outstanding show, we were really close to the stage so we had a great view of the band, and we had a great time.

Also - why should Lisa have all the fun? My coworkers threw me a surprise baby shower yesterday over the lunch hour, so I also got to experience the joy of opening all sorts of good baby stuff, and of course the customary gag gifts. Many of you are on this list, and I wanted to publicly say thanks for everything. You guys were really generous and it was much appreciated!

Now let's get on with the game results...

Family Feud Results
28 people played yesterday. Here's the results:

Topic #1: Name something that's foamy
Shaving Cream (12) - 4 points
Beer (6) - 2 points (tie)
Soap (6) - 2 points (tie)
Bubble Bath (2)
Dish Detergent and foam (cute, Chad ) got one response each.

Topic #2: An occupation that begins with the letter J
Janitor (20) - 4 points
Judge (7) - 2 points
Journalist got one vote.

Scattergories Challenge Results

Wireless Headphones = not accepted, no points awarded (adjective)
Woodlice = not accepted, as it's the same as Woodlouse
Woodlouse = not accepted, as it's the same as Woodlice
Worms = not accepted, as it's not defined as an insect
Wax worm = not accepted, as it's not defined as an insect
Water Scorpion = not accepted, as it's defined as an arachnid and not an insect

Weejuns = accepted, four points awarded
Waistcoat = accepted, four points awarded (I don't take off for spelling in most cases)
Weed = accepted, four points awarded. Definition Link.
Whiskers = accepted, four points awarded (it's slang, but I have heard of a mustache being called whiskers before)
Wedgie = accepted, four points awarded
Whimple = accepted, four points awarded

Winter/Spring 2005 Point Standings (31 people played this double points week)
The top three players this season will receive prizes!
This season will run from January 4 until whenever our baby is born (expected date is June 25).
If you would like your city/state listed next to your name, send me an email with the information!
Please verify your point total for accuracy.

After the last double points week of the season, it looks like Nia's going to take the crown, barring some unusual chain of events occurring. She's the first person to break the 200 barrier! Jordan and Karl, who got 2nd and 3rd place last season, are tied this season for the same positions. Nobody got all 24 possible points, but Max was a can of shaving cream away from getting the perfect score. Speaking of the perfect score, if you did manage to get every possible point correct all season, you'd have right around 300 points.
Are these the final standings, or do we still have another couple weeks to go? Only Baby Hale will decide that!

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Sunshine, hot and humid, highs near 90 near the ocean, mid- to upper 90s inland.
Heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees most locations this
afternoon...

Temperatures in the mid and upper 90s combined with moderate levels
of humidity will produce heat index values of 100 to 105 degrees
across most of southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia this
afternoon. The only exception will be along the immediate
coast... where the afternoon sea breeze will keep temperatures at
the beaches mainly in the 80s... and heat index values will be no
higher than 100 degrees.

Heat index values of 100 to 105 degrees are approaching the dangerous
level... and persons should take the proper precautions to prevent
becoming affected by the heat and humidity.

Match Game Wednesday
Here is a double-point edition of the Match Game! These two topics were taken from different episodes of the classic '70s TV show. Be funny and creative and give me the answer that is the most popular among all entries received today. Four points to each #1 response and two points to each #2 response.

Topic #1: Glen is a gourmet through and through. Before he bites his nails, he puts _______ on them!

Topic #2: Harold believes in the "learning-by-doing" method. In his line of work, that's unfortunate because Harold is a _______.

Today’s forecast grade: B-

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with clouds and wind, temps are mostly in the lower 60s.

Synopsis: The low pressure system that has given us scattered thunderstorms over the last week and a half has finally moved east, currently just north of Toronto. With high pressure slowly moving into the Midwest, we can expect the clouds and winds to eventually decrease as the day progresses.

Today: Cloudy and windy with an isolated shower possible, but look for some clearing and decreasing winds late in the day. With a strong, cool northerly wind, you'd think autumn is near, but I'm still expecting a high of 69 and warmer temperatures over the next few days. Rain chance 30%.

Tonight: Becoming mostly clear, lows lower 50s. Is it just us or is it moth season? They are everywhere!!

Tomorrow: Partly cloudy, highs lower 70s central, mid- 70s south. And remember...summer hasn't even officially started yet!

Extended:
Friday: Mostly sunny, highs mid- to upper 70s.
Saturday: Sunny, highs upper 70s to near 80.
Sunday: Sunny, highs near 80 central, lower 80s south.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Sunshine and breezy, highs just over 100, dew points near 40 (rather not humid).
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NV/Henderson.html

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Partly cloudy, hot and humid, highs upper 80s to near 90, heat index near 100 along the ocean.
Heat advisory in effect from noon today to 6 PM EDT this evening for areas away from the coast...
Temperatures will climb into the mid and upper 90s across much of
southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia this
afternoon... with even a few places reaching 100 degrees. These
temperatures combined with high humidity values will result in
dangerous heat index values of 105 to 110 degrees in most
locations away from the coast this afternoon.

Although the sea breeze will offer slight relief at the
beaches... the heat indices will still reach 100 to 103 degrees
near the Atlantic.

The excessive heat and humidity will make for dangerous
conditions if proper precautions are not taken. Excessive heat
kills people by taking away the capability of the human body to
cool itself. Approximately 175 people die each year from exposure
to excessive heat. If working outside... take frequent breaks and
drink enough water to remain hydrated.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/SC/Hilton_Head_Island.html

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Partly cloudy with isolated afternoon storms, hot and humid with highs mid- 90s, dew points upper 70s (very uncomfortable). Ozone Action Day.

Weather Update for June 14, 2005.

By: HaleStorm, 7:57 AM CDT on June 14, 2005

Good Flag Day morning!

Scattergories Tuesday
It's the last double-points week of the season, and another rousing game of Scattergories is here! Using the starting letter randomly chosen below, email me something that fits each topic. Unlike Family Feud, you want to be unique here, as all duplicated answers will not receive any points. And you can't use adjectives as your starting word, as that would make for way too many possibilities. Four points will go to each player with a unique answer that passes the Scattergories Challenge Message Board, which will come into play tomorrow. But first thing's first. Here are the topics, taken straight from the board game:

Starting Letter: W

Topic #1: Insects

Topic #2: Things That You Wear

Today’s forecast grade: B-

Forecast:
Now: At 7am with clouds and wind, temps are around 65-70.

Synopsis: Well, yesterday I warned about the severe weather threat, and wouldn't you know it, at around 3:45pm we were evacuated to the basement because of a tornado warning. Luckily all we had up here was a brief tornado touchdown to our west and some flooding around our area (there was 2.8" of rain in my rain gauge when I got home last night!)
As for today, an area of low pressure near Minneapolis is finally moving to the east, meaning that we can expect breezy conditions with scattered showers continuing over the next 24 hours.

Today: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, but the main severe weather threat is now off to our east. Windy with a cooler high of only 73, dew points in the upper 60s early but dropping later today (still rather humid when you note the cooler high temperature today). Rain chance 70%. FYI, the average temperature in Madison so far in June is 72.7 degrees, which is 8.0 degrees above normal.

Tonight: Cloudy and windy with scattered rain showers, lows upper 50s, rain chance 70%.

Tomorrow: Maybe a morning rain shower, otherwise windy with decreasing clouds and eventually decreasing winds as well. Highs in the upper 60s. Morning rain chance 30%.

Extended:
Thursday: Partly cloudy, highs in the lower 70s.
Friday: Mostly sunny, highs upper 60s.
Saturday: Mostly sunny, highs low to mid- 70s.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, highs mid- to upper 70s, and we may even see 80s again by early next week.

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Sunshine and breezy, warmer highs a couple degrees over 100.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NV/Henderson.html

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Breezy with afternoon inland thunderstorms, highs mid- 80s.
Heat indices 100 to 105 degrees away from the coast today...
The combination of temperatures in the lower to middle 90s and
dewpoint temperatures in the middle 70s this afternoon and
tomorrow afternoon will lead to heat index values of 100 to 105
degrees. These conditions are most likely away from the immediate
coast between the hours of noon and 6 PM.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/SC/Hilton_Head_Island.html

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Partly cloudy and breezy, highs near 90.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/TX/League_City.html
http://www.wunderground.com/US/TX/Pearland.html

Today in Georgetown, Kentucky: You're moving the wrong direction, dooder. Glad to hear your move from Michigan went ok though. Scattered thunderstorms, breezy, highs upper 80s.

Weather Update for June 13, 2005.

By: HaleStorm, 8:12 AM CDT on June 13, 2005

Good Morning and happy Monday,
This is Lisa with our weekend update and I hope you all had a great weekend. Our weekend was rather busy, but we still had some time to relax as well. Friday night we went to a Timber Rattler baseball game with a big group of our friends. However, we only got to watch about an inning and a half of baseball before it starting downpouring. They ended up calling off the game, but we now get to use our tickets and go to any regular season game. While we were sitting in the parking lot trying to get out, we heard from my little sister-in-law Kelley and Meteorologist in training, that there was severe weather in the area (she even said the storms were "training"!) It turns out that there was a tornado warning for Calumet and Winnebago counties and a waterspout had been sited over Lake Winnebago near Oshkosh for the second straight day, and it was headed our way! We finally got out of the TimberRattlers parking lot, raced home as quickly as we could and headed for the basement. Steve of course was checking out the radar and the clouds outside. We ended up having quite a storm, but no tornadoes near us. Afterwards we had a great fireworks show courtesy of mother nature, with silent lightning strikes visible way in the distance several hours after the storm came through.

Saturday was a busy day for us. We started out the day by going to the Menasha Fire Dept. to have our baby car seats inspected. It was a really good idea that we did too, because when we read the instruction manual and tried to put them in ourselves, we both put them in incorrectly. We also learned a lot, and it's a free service to the community. We learned the statistics in Lamaze class that 4 out of 5 car seats are used incorrectly. That scared me, so we decided it was pretty important to have the inspection done, and I'm really glad we did. Then Saturday afternoon we took Kozmo to Dog Party 6. We had a good time, and Kozmo especially enjoyed the freedom from his leash and being able to run free. He also really enjoyed being around all the other dogs and the people. I'm not sure who he enjoyed more, all the dogs or all the people that gave him attention. At one point Liz, the party hostess, threw a whole bunch of doggie treats on the ground, but Kozmo wasn't much interested in them. We left a few hours later because the heat was getting to me and I was starting to feel uncomfortable, but we all had a good time. We were both feeling kind of sluggish due to heat so we just relaxed when we got home.

Sunday was a busy day around the house for us. We also had to run errands to Home Depot and the mall, and that took up most of our day, but then we got to relax in the evening. Steve plans on finally fertilizing the lawn this week, now that we have a riding lawn mower that makes mowing our big lawn a lot easier. Well, that wraps up our weekend, have a great week.

One thing that Lisa didn't mention was that while we were waiting to see if the storm would clear during the rain delay, our friend John had brought his daughter Katelyn and a neighbor's son Spencer. Well, both of the kids were frightened by the storm, as would be expected from little children. In trying to calm Spencer down, I started telling him about my Meteorology knowledge, discussing the storm, how "safe" we were, and throwing technical terms at the little boy so that it would overwhelm and perhaps calm him down. At one point, though, he had what was perhaps the quote of the year, when he looked at me and yelled, "You're no Pete Petoniak!" Ahhh...too true! If I had a nickel for every time I heard that...

Today’s forecast grade: B+

Important Weather Statement: (Courtesy of the National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
Look for a few showers...with an isolated thunderstorm possible mainly north of The Dells through 830 am. The showers were moving north at 30 mph. Thunderstorms are expected to develop and move into southern Wisconsin this afternoon. Some may become severe.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=MKX&StateCode=WI&SafeCityName=Madison

Forecast:
Now: At 8am with a line of showers and isolated thunderstorms in west-central Wisconsin and quite a bit more back in Minnesota, Iowa, and the Dakotas, temperatures are already near 70 central and the low to mid- 70s south.

Synopsis: That wacky stationary frontal boundary still lies across Highway 10 in central Wisconsin. However, the stationary low pressure system that has been sitting over the Dakotas for the last week is finally going to start moving east again, which will likely generate a severe weather outbreak across Iowa, Illinois and parts of Wisconsin.

Today: Some sunshine early but increasing clouds with showers and thunderstorms developing this afternoon and evening, some of which may very well be severe. Parts of Wisconsin are under a moderate risk of severe weather today, including a 15% chance of large tornadoes developing within 25 miles of any given point. A quick convection and vertical wind shear profile review from Bufkit showed the chance of not just ordinary thunderstorm cells developing today, like we've had over the past week, but perhaps multicells and even supercells developing, especially in southwestern Wisconsin. Supercells are the types of storms that can develop the large tornadoes you sometimes see on the Weather Channel, and are nothing to laugh at. Remember that the safest place to be during a severe thunderstorm is not next to a power pole, no matter how cool the sounds emanating from it may be. High of 82 central, mid- 80s south, dew points near 70 (rather uncomfortable). Rain chance 50%.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms, and again, some of these may be severe with strong winds, large hail and possibly very cool-looking tornadoes. Lows low to mid- 60s. Rain chance 60%.

Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy with showers and isolated thunderstorms. There is a slight risk of these thunderstorms becoming severe, but I think that today is the primary threatening day. Cooler with highs low to mid- 70s. Rain chance 60%.

Extended:
Wednesday: Maybe a morning shower, then decreasing clouds. Highs only upper 60s to near 70. Rain chance 30%.
Thursday: Mostly sunny, highs near 70 central, lower 70s south.

Weather Update for June 10, 2005.

By: HaleStorm, 1:29 PM CDT on June 10, 2005

TGIF!

So get this - last night I'm playing tennis in my weekly league at Springfield Park, the park a couple blocks from our house. During the second set, I see Lisa waddling over! She walked all the way from our house to the park to tell me that my weather radio went off and that there was a tornado warning just to our south. Sure enough, a tornado was reported on the ground just a few miles away from our house, over northern Lake Winnebago and eventually hitting northwestern Calumet county, about a 10-minute car ride away. I didn't see anything in the news wires about it, so it must not have done much damage, but I did take a few pictures of the slick-looking wall cloud that you could see from our backyard. I'll post those this weekend.

Ruth has now come all the way back and taken over second place with 10 of 11 possible points this week! Sheila, Clair, Brian and Sally picked up a couple spots, and Max and Tammy moved up three spots each. You can tell summer is here with a few regulars not having the chance to play this week. Next week is double points week, and with a very close battle for 2nd and 3rd place, anything can happen!

Today’s forecast grade: B+

Forecast:
Now: At 8am with scattered thunderstorms in east-central Minnesota, scattered showers in Iowa but a partly sunny sky with just isolated showers in Wisconsin, temps are near 70 central and in the lower 70s south.

Synopsis: That wacky nearly-stationary frontal boundary is still hovering over Wisconsin this morning, but it's now near south-central Wisconsin, as opposed to north-central Wisconsin, where it's been the last few days. With a southwest flow continuing, look for more of the same tropical weather through this weekend and into early next week.

Today: Partly sunny with scattered thunderstorms developing later today. The Storm Prediction Center has put us once again in the slight risk category for severe weather today and tomorrow. High of 83 central, mid- to upper 80s south, dew points near 70 (rather humid). Rain chance 35%.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Lows mid- to upper 60s. Rain chance 45%.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy with yet more scattered thunderstorms, with the slight risk of them becoming severe. Highs lower 80s, mid- 80s south, dew points lower 70s (quite humid). Rain chance 60%.

Sunday: Yep, more scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs near 80 central, lower 80s south, dew points near 70 (rather humid). Rain chance 40%.

Next Week:
Monday: What's a Monday forecast without scattered thunderstorms? Not this Monday, that's for sure. Highs near 80 central, lower 80s south. Rain chance 50%.
Tuesday: The last day of scattered thunderstorms before the upper-air weather pattern finally changes. Highs mid- to upper 70s. Rain chance 40%.
Wednesday: Partly cloudy, dry and cooler. Highs low to mid- 70s. Do you have any idea how hard it was for me not to write in the phrase "scattered thunderstorms" just out of habit?

Today in Las Vegas, Nevada: Mostly sunny through the weekend (except at night, when it will be mostly clear), highs near 90 today and mid- 90s by Sunday.
http://www.wunderground.com/US/NV/Henderson.html

Today in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina: Isolated morning storms today, then a chance of more storms tonight and this weekend. Highs lower 80s.
Through 9 am...scattered rainshowers will affect portions of southeast Georgia and southeast South Carolina. Areas from Moncks Corner to Summerville and down to Bennetts Point can expect rainfall totals near one tenth of an inch. Along the Georgia coast from Ossabaw Island to Tybee Island...residents will see some shower activity as well...with the showers moving inland across Chatham and Bryan counties. Parts of Savannah will see these showers during the morning commute.

Today in League City and Pearland, Texas: Partly cloudy and breezy with isolated storms, highs near 90. Partly cloudy this weekend.
