Tropical Depression "HELEN" has intensified into a tropical storm and is now threatening northern Luzon.

At 10:00 AM PhST, Tropical Storm Helen located at 17.2N 128.0E or 550 km east northeast of Casiguran, Aurora has 10 minutes sustained winds of 35 knots with gusts of 45 knots. The cyclone is reported as moving west northwest at 7 knots.

Tropical Storm "Helen" is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring rains over Luzon and Visayas especially over the western section.

Estimated rainfall amount is from 15-35 mm per hour (heavy to torrential) within 400 km diameter of tropical storm.

Intermittent light to moderate rains (2.5-7.5 mm/hr) are now affecting central and southern Luzon becoming more frequent moderate to heavy rains (7.5-10.0 mm/hr) during the latter part of the day towards the evening over Camarines provinces, Quezon province, Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas Mindoro, Bataan, Zambales and Metro Manila.

The public and the disaster coordinating councils concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for the next bulletin to be issued at 5 PM today.

On vacation, Hades? I hope all is well.

Gilma is taking a more northerly path as she spins down. It looks like she could be generating a little bit of groundswell that could reach Southern California beaches in a week or so. NOAA's graphical presentation of the WAVEWATCH III is offline until "at least August 20, possibly extending to September 1."

It looks like the Remnants Of Ernesto are reincarnating as Invest 94e. It's a little early to say but given it's current size and the right path Hector-to-be could generate a significant swell for SoCal beaches.
