Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the northern and central Sea had a pretty pleasant day yesterday.
In the southern Sea a large cell developed around Puerto Vallarta early yesterday morning and grew quite large and moved into the southern crossing and passed over the extreme cape area, most likely with lots of winds and the possibility of some rain there………
Over on the mainland cells developed in the early afternoon and moving north along the coast spreading out into the Sea reaching La Paz. They continued to grow during the night and finally early this morning they ended up over Hermosillo where they have been dissipating ever since.
As this STORM passed over the Guaymas/San Carlos area they did get about a quarter inch of rain and had a high gust of almost 50 knots.
This is typical of a MCS (mesoscale convective system) where the thunderbumpers become a complex and become organized on a scale larger than the individual cells.
These storms have were not the Chubbasco variety and the main body’s were over land however the remnant clouds from the storms spread out all across the southern Sea from the cape to around Puerto Escondido during the night.
On the Baja peninsula: As far as any thunderbumpers this image is showing a line of them working down the center of the Baja peninsula to around Santa Rosalia early this morning. Here in the cove we had thunderbumpers posturing back in the mountains with some lightning and thunder and some gusterly winds reaching the cove. I recorded a 31 knot gust at 1am and a couple 25 knot winds a couple of hours later but no rain.
In our Tropical Kitchen this morning invest 93 Echo is starting to crank up and expected to be elevated to a tropical storm later today. The Name will be Norbert. Name-wise we are a bit ahead to the Atlantic. They have Dolly in the Western Caribbean this morning.
Anyway the early forecast models have Norbert moving north today and tomorrow along the west coast of Mexico and toward the cape. This morning 93 Echo is around 300 miles SW of Manzanillo. Sometime Friday he is forecast to swing to the NW passing over the cape or perhaps near the cape and then moving west out into the Eastern Pacific basin. That is the currently the worst case tracking forecast, and the one most likely for Norbert to follow.
The National Hurricane Center is advising interests along the west coast of Mexico that locally heavy rains could cause life threatening flash floods and mud slides over portions to SW Mexico during the next few days.
Tropical Waves: Four are in transit in the mid Atlantic. One is just emerging from the Gulf of Tehuantepec and one is out around 120 in the basin this morning.
That’s what is going on in our hood this morning. Looking now north to the west coast of America where Western Washington will see a few showers today then mostly sunshine for the rest of the week.
In northern California they are starting to cool down after a couple of hundred degree days. Smoke lingers in the air in the northern Sacramento valley from the Happy Cape fire.
In southern California a low to the north will bring slightly cooler weather along with gusterly winds in the mountains and deserts for the next couple of days. High pressure could return this weekend and warm the southland back up again.
Looking now over to the SW where this image is showing no moisture moving up from Mexico into the SW. They can expect above normal temperatures to continue through the majority of the week under mostly dry conditions. Moisture will make a gradual return late in the week bringing thunderbumpers and afternoon showers back in the forecasts.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like we will be having an interesting week. Here in the Sea we should have a couple more days of moderate southerlies then a 1000 mb low over the Great Basin will give cause to very strong southerlies on Thursday which just happens to be the day that brother Norbert is forecast to arrive or be near the cape.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.’
The northern Sea: light SE today and tomorrow and around 21 from the SE on Thursday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: the low teens from the SW today and tomorrow and then around 22 from the SE on Thursday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: the low teens from the E or NE today and tomorrow and around 25 from the SE on Thursday.
Puerto Escondido: light SE today, around 17 tomorrow from the SE and on Thursday around 20 from the SE.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Light SE today then around 17 for the next two days from the SE.
The East Cape: light SE today, around 20 tomorrow and back to around 16 on Thursday.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta today are the only locations that forecasts that seem likely to be close over the next 4-5 days and they will be light and from the SW. With a STORM moving down the coast all bets are off. Expect and prepare for winds at least GALE force. If you are in this area I’d give this STORM your full attention.
