Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see there has been a lot of thunderbumper activity in the Sea of Cortez and the Baja peninsula in the past 24 hours. Yesterday there were several large cells just north of La Paz that left the Baja coast, crossed the Sea and ended up in Sonora. There was also considerable thunderbumper activity from the cape all the way north along the west coast with many locations receiving rain. Heavy rain in the La Paz area has caused the sewers to back up. Not good for tourism. Warnings posted "Don’t swim in the ocean near La Paz".
Over in Sonora the Guaymas/San Carlos has some nice showers around 3:30 yesterday afternoon Gave them about a quarter inch of rain.
Here in the cove we had several nice showers again yesterday afternoon. These nice afternoon showers will make Baja desert bloom in about 10 days. The ranchers and the cows will be happy.
Looking south to the west coast of Mexico I can see a solid line of cells from around Mazatlan south to Manzanillo this morning. Some on the wane, some building.
In our Tropical Kitchen this morning we have three tropical storms. Karina and Lowell are just nice tropical storms that are passing Baja on their way to the western Pacific and Hawaii.
Marie will not be nice. There is a good chance she will become a category 4 hurricane in a couple of days. She is still on track to pass to the west of the Baja peninsula early next week. I’d imagine that the Baja peninsula will see some cloudiness from Maria as she passes.
Tropical Waves: Two are in transit in the mid Atlantic and one just snuggled up next to Marie.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where they can expect just normal August weather through the weekend. The only item of note would be “Surfs Up” in southern California. Warm and dry for the entire west coast.
Looking over to the SW where most of the cells moving out of Sonora have been moving into the southwest corner of New Mexico overnight. Most of the thunderbumper activity will take place to the east of the Tucson area over the weekend with the exception of some of the higher elevations.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like our winds will take a turn to the north for a few days.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: the low teens from the NE for the 3-day forecast period.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: the mid to high teens from the NW today and tomorrow then light SW on Sunday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: the mid teens from the NE for the next 3 days.
Puerto Escondido: about the same thing. The mid teens from the next 3 days. Sunday could see light SE.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. The low teens from the NE today and tomorrow and light SE on Sunday.
The East Cape: about the same with light NW today and tomorrow and the low teens from the SE on Sunday.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan: the low teens from the SW for the 3-day forecast period.
Puerto Vallarta to Cabo Corrienties: light NW today, light SW tomorrow and light SE on Sunday.
South of Cabo Corrienties: mostly the low teens from the SE for the 3-day forecast period.
