Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that that big honk’n STORM that left the Puerto Vallarta area yesterday morning and headed north pretty much died in the southern crossing about mid morning.
This morning it is hard to find a place from around Los Mochas south to Central American that is not showing a thunderbumper or the remnants of one.
There is a squall west of Mazatlan this morning however the rest of the crossing has just some residual cloudiness.
North of La Paz the Sea looks to be pretty much clear this morning. There are however several what look to be small squalls still working at sunrise this morning in the center of the central Sea leaving some residual cloudiness that should disappear by mid morning. That being said the water vapor imagery is showing very heavy water vapor concentrations over the Sea this morning. That leads me to think that this afternoon we will be seeing more thunderbumpers along the Baja crest and along the coast. We’ll see?
Late yesterday afternoon the satellite image showed a line of thunderbumpers from around Loreto north to Mulegé moving north along the Baja mountains . Here in the cove we had light sprinkles in the early afternoon then around 10 O’clock heavy thunder and lightning, no rain but the winds cranked up with a couple 32 knot gusts.
Taking a quick look over to Sonora where yesterday and last night there has been a steady line of thunderbumpers moving across the Fence into the southern California and Arizona deserts.
In our Tropical Kitchen this morning our “Wanna-Be” kept flirting with that Tropical Wave and has now become depressed (Tropical Depression 11 Echo). The forecast is for the winds to read hurricane strength in a couple of days as Hurricane Karina and THEN pretty much follow the last storms in the basin and head for Hawaii.
Tropical Waves: One had just left the African coast, two are in transit in the mid Atlantic and one is just entering the Tehuantepec isthmus.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where in the Great Northwest a strong low pressure system will move eastward over the Pacific North West . A cold front associated with this system will extend across Washington, Oregon and northern California today. Severe thunderbumpers are forecast to develop ahead of this frontal boundary over SE Washington and NE Oregon today.
In northern California that low will bring mostly cool and breezy conditions to the north state today. Isolated thunderbumpers are possible in the higher elevations while the valleys will remain dry with afternoon highs in the 80s.
In southern California the coastal areas will continue to be seasonally warm and dry with the deserts and mountains seeing thunderbumpers from monsoonal moisture moving up from the south.
Looking now over to the SW where scattered showers and thunderbumpers are on tap for today with some of these storms generating locally heavy rain and strong winds. Flash flood advisories have been posted overnight for portions of NW Arizona, California, Nevada, the lower Colorado River area, Phoenix and all of Utah. A downward moisture trend will lead to less thunderbumper activity Friday and Saturday.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like moderate SE winds will be in the entire 3-day forecast.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The Northern Sea: the low to mid teens from the SE for the 3-day forecast period.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: the low teens from the SE today, light SW tomorrow and light NW on Friday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: the high teens today from the SE then the low teens from the NE for the next two days.
Puerto Escondido: The high teens today from the SE then the low teens from the SE for the next two days.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. The low teens from the SE for the 3-day forecast period.
The East Cape: light SW today and tomorrow and the mid teens from the SW on Friday.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan to Cabo Corrienties mostly the low teens from the SW for the 3-day forecast period.
South of the cape: pretty much the same thing mostly light SW winds for the next 3 days.
