Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see the skies over the Sea of Cortez were mostly clear yesterday and last night with the exception of late afternoon thumpers building along the Baja east coast.
All to the serious thunderbumper activity took place in Sinaloa and Sonora starting late yesterday afternoon. They continued to build and move north until early this morning then started to break up leaving a lot of residual clouds in the southern crossing region and along the Sonoran coast this morning. This image is showing the central and northern Sea to be pretty much clear this morning.
Looking south along the west coast of Mexico I can see a couple of nice size thumpers that starting building around midnight between Puerto Vallarta and Cabo Corrienties and have continued to build all night moving out into the Pacific and spreading clouds into the mouth of the Sea of Cortez and the extreme cape area.
In our Tropical Kitchen this morning we have our latest tropical STORM. His name is Julio and he’s forecast to become a himicane sometime tomorrow. He is following in the footsteps of Hurricane Iselle which is now over a 1000 miles SW of the cape. If Julio follows the plan he too will pose no threat to interests on the mainland of Mexico or Baja.
Julio will be a quick change artist, going from a “gonna-be” to a himicane in about 24 hours.
Remember sister Genevieve? She packed her bags about a week ago and headed toward Hawaii. I just though you would want to know, she has arrived safely and is now bringing heavy rain to the islands as a tropical storm.
Tropical Waves: We only have two on the charts this morning. One in the mid Atlantic and the other is just entering the Caribbean.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where
Monsoonal moisture will continue to surge northward over parts of the Southwest and the Great Basin today. Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms will develop across the Sierra Nevadas, and portions of the SW. These thunderstorms will interact with sloped terrain, which will bring a chance of flash flooding.
The West Coast and the Pacific Northwest will stay mostly clear and dry due to a ridge of high pressure out in the Pacific.
In northern California the inland valleys and the foothills could see some showers and thunderbumpers today but just cloudy along the coast.
In southern California a weak low off the coast will keep the monsoon moisture away until early next week. Temperatures will be about average for the week.
Looking over to the SW where an upper low over the region will exit north and allow dryer air to move across the area limiting the chances of thunderbumper through much of the upcoming week. Temperatures in the Tucson area about 100 today.
To the west, in Needles, the Flash flood advisory is forecast to be lifted by 5am this morning.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like we will be losing our southern winds for a couple of days.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: the low teens from the NE for the 3-day forecast period.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: around 17 today from the SW then light SW for the next two days.
The Baja side of the central Sea: the mid teens from the NE for the 3-day forecast period.
Puerto Escondido: the mid teens from the SE for the 3-day forecast period.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. the mid teens from the SW for today and tomorrow then light SE on Wednesday.
The East Cape: light SW today, light NW tomorrow and on Wednesday the low teens from the SE.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan to Cabo Corrienties the low teens from the SW for the 3-day forecast period.
South of the cape: they too will see moderate SW winds for the 3-day forecast period.
