Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that MCS that developed over the central Sea early yesterday morning finally dissipated however it left the skies cloudy all afternoon and only early this morning did the skies finally start clearing. Several locations reported light rain yesterday; however the Guyamas/San Carlos area received almost an inch of rain.
With the exception of the high water vapor in the form of high whispys this morning the skies look pretty much clear for the central and southern Sea this morning. There are still some remnant fluffys in the northern Sea this morning.
Remember that an MCS (mesoscale convection system) is a complex of thunderbumpers that becomes organized on a scale larger than the individual thunderstorms and normally persists for several hours or more.
The classic definition of a Chubbasco is a fast moving, (normally 12-15 mph) high topped cell that generates strong winds coming down from all sides. Thus you see strong winds for a short period of time as the STORM passes. Not all thunderstorms are Chubbascos.
Early last evening a rather large cell developed over close to the New Mexico/Mexico border and moved west into SW Arizona. This produced very heavy rain and strong winds that downed power poles, trees and city street lights in Tucson. Gusts to 66 mph were reported.
That was the only thunderbumper activity in Sonora last night.
Looking south now, the cape region looks clear this morning as well as the southern crossing.
Further south there was a good sized cell that developed to the east of Puerto Vallarta last night and moved up to the coast but not into the Sea and is now currently on the wane.
Looking further south to the Gulf of Tehuantepec the pressure gradient across the isthmus is keeping with winds whistling through the Chivela pass into the Gulf. The 30 knot winds are forecast to decrease to around 20 knots or less this evening. The EarthWind Map is showing 29 knot winds exiting the Gulf this morning.
There is nothing cooking in our Tropical Kitchen again this morning and the long range models are quiet as well.
Tropical Waves: there are three in transit in the Atlantic this morning. One just entering Guatemala, one just exiting the Gulf of Tehuantepec and one well out into the Eastern Pacific basin. All, with the exception of the one well out in the basin had moderate to strong convection associated with them, however so have the last 3 waves that have entered the basin with no development into anything tropical.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where strong high pressure centered over the Great Basin will continue to build westward early this week. As it does temperatures will peak along the west coast today as onshore flow diminishes and a very warm airmass moves overhead northern California. Temperatures in the upper Sacramento valley will be around 111 and Sacramento 103.
There is a good chance of some thunderbumper activity in the Sierras around Lake Tahoe today.
Looking now to southern California where they will see some cloudiness today but the temperatures will remain in the mid 70s. There continues to be a chance of some showers and thumpers in the deserts and mountains today.
Looking now over to the SW where as I mention they had a busy night… weather-wise. They can expect daily rounds of thunderbumpers through tomorrow with some storms producing locally heavy rainfall and potentially damaging wind gusts. The storms will tend to be more isolated in nature during the latter half of the week.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence the Sea should continue to see moderate winds.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: the mid teens today from the SE. Tomorrow light SE and Wednesday light NE.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: light SE today. 16-18 from the NW for the next two days.
The Baja side of the central Sea: 14-16 from the NE for the 3-day forecast period.
Puerto Escondido: the low teens from the SE today. Light NE tomorrow and light SE on Wednesday.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Less than 10 for the 3-day forecast period. Today SE, tomorrow NE and Wednesday light SW.
The East Cape: light NE today, around 18 tomorrow from the NW and on Wednesday light NE again.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan to Cabo Corrienties mostly very light to moderate winds. Today SW, tomorrow NW and Wednesday SW.
South of the cape mostly light to moderate SW breezes for the 3-day forecast period.
