Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the Sea of Cortez is cloud free this morning, but looking over along the west coast of Mexico I can see that area of disturbed weather west of Zihuatanejo has sent a blanket of clouds from around Mazatlan to Zihuatanejo this morning.
This morning in the National Hurricane Center’s Pacific Basin report they are giving this area a 50% chance of tropical development. Well this comes a couple of weeks early for the official opening of the Eastern Pacific basin hurricane season, May 15th.
None of the major sites have put out any tracking information in this system but it looks to me that it will slowly move toward the coast starting today bringing heavy rain to the coast by tomorrow and Friday. It looks like it will peter out late Friday or early Saturday along the coast without going inland. This is a very uneducated guess, so don’t chisel this in stone. I would advise folks in the area to prepare for at least heavy rain with the possibility of tropical STORM force winds.
Of note: As of 11:30Z or 5:30 local time the Navy has not designated this area as an invest.
The Sonrisanet webpage has automatic updates on tropical activity and I will be activated the page later this morning.
So it looks like an early start to our tropical season this year. That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where at the top of this image the Great Northwest will have off and on showers through the weekend.
In northern California where dry and warmer weather returns today. A front moving in the Great Northwest will bring just a chance of showers to the foothills and mountains tomorrow and Friday. Another low will skirt to the east over the weekend perhaps bring a few showers to the northern Sierras.
In southern California that low trough will move east out of the region today moving through Arizona on its way into the Great Basin by tomorrow. Today will be party cloudy and cool. A gradual warming trend will happen as high pressure slowly builds over the weekend and hot weather is forecast for next week in the southland.
Looking now over to the southwest where as I just mentioned a Pacific low will slowly move through Arizona today bringing cooler temperatures and another round of afternoon breezes. The winds are not expected to be as strong as yesterday. In the wake of the passing front high pressure will build over the weekend bringing temperatures back into the 90s across the lower deserts next week.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like the strongest NW winds will be in the central Sea today.
OF note: It appears that for the past several days these series of lows that have been moving through the Great Basin have been causing havoc with the wind forecasting models. For example yesterday the northern crossing was supposed to have winds in the mid teens. Well 30 knot winds showed up on both sides. Today all models are showing around 20 knots in the central Sea, based on the past couple of days the winds could be higher. If my forecasts don’t get any better there’s a good chance I’ll end up the poster guy for dart boards.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: the low teens for today and tomorrow from the NE and on Friday these light winds swing to the SE.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: 19 today from the NW then 15-17 from the NW for the next two days.
The Baja side of the central Sea: around 20 today from the NE then around 15 knots from the NE on Thursday and Friday.
Puerto Escondido: around 15-16 knots from the NE for the 3-day forecast period.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Light winds for the 3-day forecast period. Today NW then Thursday and Friday NE.
The Sonoran passage south from Guaymas to Mazatlan ballpark around 20 from the NW for the next three days.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan, NW for the next 3 days. Today 18, tomorrow 24 and 18 again on Friday.
Puerto Vallarta to Cabo Corrienties: light NW today, around 16 tomorrow from the NW and a tad less on Friday from the NW.
South of Cabo Corrienties: This is sort of tough because of the lack on tracking information the low parked off the west coast this morning. Certainly lots of rain as the low moves closer to shore but how much wind is only a guess right now. If I was in the area I’d plan on strong winds and be happy if they did not happen.
The National Hurricane Center is planning a special advisory later this morning that will show up on the Tropical Page of the Sonrisanet Webpage.
