Looking down into the Sea this morning, well first looking out to the Eastern Pacific basin where there are two items of interest. One a rather weak dry low that is heading for central California and scheduled to arrive Friday night.
The other is a rather wet moisture plume that is spread out from around 140 on the ITCZ/Monsoon trough to the international border to the north and Turtle Bay to the south. When I animate this image it appears that the plume is slowly moving south, so I’d expect to see some cloudiness starting in the north-central Sea and working south during the day. Embedded within this plume are numerous thunderbumper and showers. Normally these wet plumes loose most of their moisture as soon as they make land fall on the west side of the peninsula. We’ll have to wait and see what happens with this one. It could be with us for several days.
So this morning from Puerto Escondido south the skies are clear. Looking south along the west coast of Mexico I can’t see any clouds at all along the coast.
Further south strong high pressure that was centered over eastern Mexico has shifted into the NW Gulf of Mexico lessening the gradient across the Tehuantepec isthmus and winds funneling through the Chivela pass into the Gulf of Tehuantepec this morning. The GALE force winds will continue through Friday morning and start to subside on Friday afternoon. Meantime Seas will be around 20 feet. The EarthWind Map was showing 28 knot SW winds moving out of the Gulf in the Eastern Pacific basin this morning. Seas running greater than 8 feet will reach as far west as 117W.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where a low moving out of the Gulf of Alaska will be moving inland over British Columbia and just clip western Washington today. High pressure over that region will result in mostly dry weather and above normal temperatures into the weekend.
In northern California high pressure over the region is bringing generally fair skies and well above normal temperatures. That low out in the Pacific is expected to arrive on Friday and Saturday and will bring a threat of Sierra showers mostly to the south of Lake Tahoe. Otherwise lots of sun.
In southern California that approaching low will break down the high and bring cooler weather and coastal fog today and tomorrow. The low could bring a chance of some mountain showers on Saturday, but there is not much moisture in the system.
Looking now over to the southwest where high pressure over the desert southwest will keep temperatures at well above normal values through tomorrow. Some of the warmest desert locations will be see 100 degree highs today and tomorrow.
As that Pacific low passes through this weekend it will be a bit cooler and there will be an increase in the winds. Once the system passes to the NE a warming trend in on tap for early next week with high pressure building back into the region.
Well, that’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence the northern and central Sea will be having light to moderate southerlies today and tomorrow.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: the mid teens from the SE today and tomorrow and mid teens from the SW on Saturday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: 10 knots or less from the SE today and tomorrow and about the same on Saturday from the SW.
The Baja side of the central Sea: mid teens from the SE or east today and tomorrow and light NE on Saturday.
Puerto Escondido: the mid teens from the NE for the 3-day forecast period. Maybe the SE???
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands. Light SE today and the low teens from the SW Friday and Saturday.
La Paz: light from the west today. Mid teens from the SE tomorrow and around 18 from the SW on Saturday.
The Sonoran passage south from Guaymas to Mazatlan: it looks like the mid teens from the SW for the next 3 days.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan: 13-16 from the SW for the next 3 days.
Puerto Vallarta to Cabo Corrienties: 11-14 from the NW for the 3-day forecast period.
South of Cabo Corrienties: Manzanillo mid teens and the rest low teens from the SW for the next 3 days.
For those of you Canadians who are returning to the mother land for the summer. Summerland in the Okanagan Valley was a crisp 32 degrees this morning and will warm up to around 60 today. Here in the central Sea of Cortez we will be looking at highs today in the high 80s.
And the jungle drums are saying we can have a good view of the lunar eclipse around 11:00 on Monday night.
