Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the Eastern Pacific basin all the way out to Hawaii is overcast this morning. These clouds are moving with the east/west flow in the basin and much like yesterday we will see bands of multi-level clouds passing over the Sea of Cortez today. This morning it will be mostly whispys becoming a bit thicker this afternoon.
Looking now south to the west coast of Mexico where it continues to be cloud free this morning.
Further south in the Gulf of Tehuantepec a short lived wind-event will begin this morning with winds funneling through the Chivela pass into the Gulf in the 20-25 knot ranges by this evening. The winds should increase to GALE force by tomorrow morning with Sea building to around 11 feet. By tomorrow evening the winds will be 20 knots or less with the Sea to less than 8 feet.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where it looks like the STORM door is open for California with a series of storms moving into northern California this week.
In this image I can see two lows swirling. One has just left the Gulf of Alaska and is moving down the British Columbia coast. The other that is is just off the northern California coast this morning and currently bringing rain to Washington, Oregon and northern California this morning. Rain is expected to begin in the Redding area this morning, in the Sacramento region this afternoon and spread east into the northern Sierra by late today or this evening.
This first system is progged to bring only modest rain but the second arriving Wednesday into Thursday should be more potent. Snow levels will drop down to around 4000 feet this week. A couple of feet of snow at the higher elevations are expected.
As a sidebar: Modified small aircraft operating out of Mc Clellan field in Sacramento will be seeding the clouds to get as much moisture out of the clouds as possible. Studies have shown that seeding the clouds with silver iodide can get anywhere from 5-20% more rain from the clouds. SMUD is funding the seeding project to get more water in northern California reservoirs .
In southern California the models are now showing the region will probably see some light showers as these systems pass through to the north this week. Gusterly winds in the mountains and deserts are also forecast.
Looking now over to the southwest where a weak upper level low will move across southern Arizona today bringing a chance of a shower or thunderbumper to the mountains east of Tucson today. Then a series of systems moving through the Great Northwest and the Great Basin over the next couple of days will bring strong gusterly winds Wednesday and Thursday along with a few mountain showers and cooler temperatures. This morning however the skies are clear and Tucson was 55 degrees at sunrise this morning.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence the forecast is still for moderate winds to the end of the month.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: Light SW winds today, moderate SW winds tomorrow and moderate NE winds on Thursday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: 16 today from the NW, light tomorrow from the SW and on Thursday light NW.
The Baja side of the central Sea: the mid teens from the NE for the next 3 days.
Puerto Escondido: the low teens from the east or SE for the 3-day forecast period.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Light winds over the 3-day forecast period. Today NW, tomorrow SW and Thursday back to the light NW.
The East Cape: 12 today from the NE, then less than 10 from the NE for the next 2 days.
The Sonoran passage south from Guaymas to Mazatlan: mid teens from the NW today then SW for the next two days.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan the mid teens from the SW for the 3-day forecast period.
Puerto Vallarta to Cabo Corrienties: mostly light SW for the next 3 days.
South of the cape: mostly light SW for the 3-day forecast period.
