Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that tropical moisture plume that originated around 130 along the ITCZ/Monsoon trough is still with us and drifting multi-level clouds over the Sea of Cortez from around Santa Rosalia south to La Paz this morning. It looks like we will be seeing this overcast most of the day. Within this plume, out in the Pacific, I can see several areas of showers and possible thunderbumpers but it looks like none of these will come ashore. That being said it also looks like the plume is slowly moving south so, maybe, perhaps Concepción Bay might see some sun this afternoon. We’ll see?
Looking south to the west coast of Mexico where there are no clouds along the coast until almost South America this morning.
The latest Gulf of Tehuantepec wind event ended yesterday afternoon however residual 8 ft seas still remain in the Sea and they should flatten out by this evening with the weekend being quiet.
Looking ahead another Tehuantepecker is due in Monday afternoon as the next strong cold front moves through the Gulf of Mexico.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where I can see a nice low swirling off the British Columbia coast this morning. It’s forecast to bring rain to the lowlands of western Washington and snow to the Cascades later today. Wet weather is expected through at least mid week.
Northern Oregon will see some of this wetness but northern California will remain unseasonably warm and dry with only a slight chance of some rain late in the week.
In southern California under building high pressure the southland will see a warming trend over the weekend along with some gusterly winds in the mountains and deserts.
Looking now over to the southwest were a dry system is dropping through New Mexico his morning and will be generating gusterly winds across eastern Arizona today. It will be short lived and high pressure will return quickly warming the afternoons with mostly clear skies and light breezy afternoons into next week.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence this weekend if you are in the Sea of Cortez you should have found a good anchorage, double checked the ground tackle, the knot on the dingy, found a good long book because it will be very windy in the Sea of Cortez this weekend. Butt-ugly is a term we weather folks like to use.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that Monday through most of next week the weather should be delightful with very moderate winds and warm days.
Meantime here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: 25 NW today, 23 tomorrow and light NE on Monday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: around 30 today from the NW, 25 tomorrow and 20 from the NE on Monday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: 26 from the NW today, 30 tomorrow and around 15 on Monday from the NW.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands. 18 today from the NE, 24 tomorrow NW and on Monday light NE.
La Paz: 23 today NW, 28 tomorrow and low teens from the NW on Monday.
The East Cape: 25 today NW, 30 tomorrow NW and around 15 on Monday from the NW.
The Sonoran passage south from Guaymas to Mazatlan: the mid 20s from the NW for the 3-day forecast period.
The Mexican Riviera where they will escape the strong winds in the Sea. Mazatlan: 16-18 today and tomorrow from the NW and around 11 on Monday from the NE.
Puerto Vallarta: low teens today and tomorrow from the NW and light NE on Monday.
Cabo Corrienties: moderate NW today and tomorrow and light SW on Monday.
In the Manzanillo area around 12 knots over the 3-day forecast period. Today NW, tomorrow and Monday SW.
Further south around Zihuatanejo: light NW winds today and tomorrow and light SE on Monday.
