Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the Sea of Cortez as well as the west coast of America are clear of any clouds his morning.
Out in the Pacific off the northern west coast of Baja there are some straggle clouds that are part of the outer ring of the low spiraling to the north. They are moving toward the peninsula; whether they make it over the mountains sometime later today we’ll just have to wait and see.
There is nothing going on in the Gulf of Tehuantepec this morning, it looks like all the weather is to the north of us, so that’s it for our hood.
Looking now at the Great Northwest where lowland snow is possible again this weekend.
They will be snowboarding in the streets of Portland as well today.
In northern California the much advertized first STORM has arrived on schedule in northern California and is bringing rain to the valleys and snow down to around 4500 feet. Last night the Sacramento valley as well as the Delta had thunderbumper activity as well as heavy rain and strong winds.
The next STORM was around 900 miles west of San Francisco this morning. It is progged to approach the coast today, splitting from the parent low and forming a deep low just off the coast this afternoon. As this STORM nears the coast this evening southerly winds will crank up to GALE force along the coast and GALE warnings and watches are being posted through early Saturday morning. Heavy rain is expected to start around midnight tonight in northern California. Several feet of new snow are forecast for the Sierras.
In southern California the second STORM will produce significant rain with some local totals exceeding 7 inches of rain. This has given cause for warning of flash flooding, mud and debris flows near recent burn areas.
Snow levels will start around 7000 feet and lower to around 5500 feet by Saturday night. 2-3 feet of new snow is expected on the higher peaks.
This system should start to make its exit to the east sometime late Saturday or early Sunday.
Looking now over to the southwest where in the northern part of the state the higher elevations could see some mountain showers as a system brushes northern Arizona today.
The main event will arrive tomorrow with widespread showers and even a few isolated thunderbumpers possible at times through the weekend. Conditions will gradually dry out from the west to east on Sunday with high pressure and normal temperatures returning by early next week.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like February is going out like a lamb. These very moderate winds are forecast to last through the weekend.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: low teens from the SE or SW today and tomorrow and round 21 from the SW on Saturday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: 15 today from the NW the light southerlies for the next two days.
The Baja side of the central Sea: 14 NE today, 16 SE tomorrow and 12 NE on Saturday.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Low teens today from the NE. Tomorrow around 10 from the SE and Saturday 8-10 from the SW.
The East Cape: 17 today from the NW and then light SE for the next two days.
The Sonoran passage south from Guaymas to Mazatlan around 19 today from the NW then the mid to low teens from the SW for the next two days.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan today around 18 from the NW then the next two days 13-14 from the SW.
Puerto Vallarta to Cabo Corrienties today 12-15 from the NW then the next two days light SW winds
South of the cape they too will be see mostly light SW wind for the 3-day forecast period.
