Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that tropical moisture plume that has been with us for several days had been slowly moving south and decreasing in size for the past 24 hours. This morning the trailing edge of the plume is just south of Concepcion Bay and the leading edge is just south of the cape.
To the north of the plume the skies are clear. Within the plume there continues to be some wet cells. Yesterday there were scattered reports of light sprinkles in northern and central Baja but no rain accumulations.
It would appear, based on the speed that the plume is moving south, that the southern Sea will clear slowly today from north to south, perhaps clearing as early as later this morning.
Looking now over to the west coast of Mexico. At 5am the southern crossing was completely overcast however Mazatlan was clear. As the plume continues to move south the Mexican Riviera will start to see some cloudiness this morning and most likely by this evening the plume will have dissipated and they should have a starry night.
Further south the Tehuantepec remains quiet with no wind events in the 72 hour forecasts.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where today is the big day for California. A one-two weather punch will arrive today and Friday and California will finally be getting wet.
In this image I can see the low spinning off the California coast. The main part of the front will be moving ashore today and this evening with heavy rain in the valleys and significant snow in the mountains. Snow levels in northern California will start around 6500 feet and lower to around 4500 feet tomorrow night. The peaks should get a couple of feet of new snow from this first event.
The second stronger STORM is progged to arrive in quick succession on Friday and Saturday bringing another round of rain and snow. The valleys can expect around another 1 ½ inches of rain and the foothills around 2 inches. Snow levels will drop to around 4000 feet.
For southern California the timing is about the same however rainfall amounts from these storms could be very impressive. There is the potential for up to 2.5 inches of rain along the coastal area and up to 4 inches in the foothills and mountains, with even higher amounts of up to 6 inches possible along the south facing slopes.
The L.A. basin will be impacted by both storms however the San Diego area will only be affected by the second stronger system.
Along with the widespread heavy rain and mountain snow GALE force winds will bring an added element to the coastal areas for southern California.
The second STORM will start to head NE out of southern California on Sunday.
Looking now over to the southwest where today should be dry and a bit cooler. A few mountain showers are possible tomorrow as a system brushes the northern part of the state.
A wet weekend is still on track as that second Pacific STORM moves inland and across the state. Snow levels will be down to around 6500 feet as the front passes.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this sided of the Fence moderate NE or NW winds will be with us for the rest of the work week.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: light SE today, around 14 tomorrow from the SE and Friday around 15 knots from the SW.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: mid teens from the NW today and tomorrow and light southerlies on Friday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: mid teens from the NE for the 3-day forecast period.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands.
The low to mid teens from the NE today and tomorrow and light southerlies on Friday.
The East Cape: around 20 from the NW today and tomorrow and then around 12 from the SE on Friday.
The Sonoran passage south from Guaymas to Mazatlan for the first half around 20 from the NW for the 3-day forecast period. For the second half to Mazatlan today around 20, tomorrow 17 and Friday light NW.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan today and tomorrow around 20 from the NW. around 13 on Friday from the SW.
Puerto Vallarta to Cabo Corrienties: mid teens from the NW today and tomorrow and then light southerlies on Friday.
South of the cape mostly light SW for the 3-day forecast period.
