Sunday, February 02, 2014 Ground Hog Day

Voice to Text

Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see pretty much clear skies for the Sea with the exception of the cape area which continues to have some whispys pass over it this morning.
Looking south to the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera I can see a broad band of high cirrus, whispys, moving toward the mainland from around Mazatlan to Puerto Vallarta this morning and it looks like they will be seeing these whispys most of the day today.
Further south not a cloud in the sky.
Nothing working in the Gulf to Tehuantepec this morning and nothing on the horizon.
So, that’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where at the top of this image I can see a weak trough moving through western Washington this morning. It is progged to bring a chance of snow to Sea level today, then the rest of the week should be dry.
In northern California I can see a low spinning around 300 miles west of San Francisco this morning. This system is progged to move south down the coast today bringing rain to mostly the coastal areas and light snow to the highest elevations of the Sierras.
By this afternoon it should be off the central California coast bringing light to moderate showers to the southland and snow levels lowering to around 4000 feet. By tomorrow the system will start to head east leaving a few lingering showers in southern California into Tuesday.
Looking now over to the southwest where high pressure is starting to rebuild over the region. Tomorrow a system will sweep through the region bringing more colder air and a slight chance of showers. Conditions will remain unsettled through the end of the week when another stronger low will bring a better chance of wet weather to the southwest.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence my confidence in my forecast is low due to Buoy Weather’s virtual buoys displaying conflicting data. I will bring up a location and when I reload it different data shows up. I don’t know which is correct. I have contacted them, however no response yet. I have used two models this morning and the data looks in general OK, I don’t see any glaring anomalies.
It is Groundhog Day, but Punxsutawney Phil's had not made his forecast yet this morning so I’ll have to go with what I’ve got.
So with that sleazy disclaimer it looks like the next two days will see moderate NW winds and moderate NE winds on Monday.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The Northern Sea: low teens from the NE today, NW tomorrow and NE again on Monday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: light NW today and tomorrow and light NE on Monday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: mid teens today from the NW, mid teens tomorrow from the NE and light NE winds on Monday.
Puerto Escondido: 17 today NE. Light SE tomorrow and around 16 on Monday from the NE.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands. Mid teens from the NE for the 3-day forecast period.
La Paz: strong to 19 today from the NW, light tomorrow from the west and around 16 on Monday from the NE.
East Cape: strong to around 20 today and Monday from the NW and light NE tomorrow.
The Sonoran passage south from Guaymas to Mazatlan SE for the next 3 days. Around 20 today and Monday and 12 tomorrow.
Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan: 17-19 from the NW for the 3-day forecast period.
Puerto Vallarta: 11-12 knot from the NW for the next 3 days.
Cabo Corrienties: about the same thing with light NW tomorrow.
South of the cape: less than 10 from the SW for the 3-day forecast period.
