Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that again the Sea of Cortez is pretty much free of any clouds. The exception is I can see some fluffys wandering around in the southern crossing this morning.
Looking south that nasty moisture plume that has been off the west coast of Mexico for the past week looks like it has dried up with the last of the plume passing over the Mexican Riviera during the night.
It looks like sunshine will be the order of the day for the entire length of the Mexican Riviera today.
Further south in the Gulf of Tehuantepec STORM warnings will be posted for the Gulf starting tomorrow night. A strong cold front will sweep through the Gulf of Mexico. High pressure behind the front will produce a tight gradient between the east and west coast and funnel cold air through the Chivela pass into the Gulf. The STORM force winds will last through Friday morning then GALE force winds will continue through Saturday morning. Seas to 22 feet can be expected in the Gulf with a large swell spreading downstream with seas reaching 8 feet near 110W.
That’s what is going in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where not much has changed for the past week and it looks like the next week will be about the same.
The Great Northwest continues to have wet storm after another come through giving the Cascades a nice snow pack.
To give you an idea of the snow pack on the west coast. Whistle Mountain in Vancouver has a 73 inch snow pack. Squaw Valley has 22 inches and Bear Valley in southern California has 10 inches of mostly man made snow. At least half of the runs in the California ski resorts are still closed.
The computer models are finally offering some hope for next week as the ridge of high pressure off the west coast starts to break down allowing for systems to begin to impact first the Great Northwest and eventually down into California. The models are showing a wet January but the first weather to reach California will not have a lot of moisture in it. Less than a 10th of an inch but it could signal the start of the main storm track returning to California. We’ll see?
Not much in the way of any changes in the weather in southern California. The seasonally warm days continue.
Looking over to the southwest where dry and seasonably warm conditions will continue through the weekend. Generally light winds and periods of whispys can be expected over the next several days.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like tomorrow and Saturday the northern and central Sea will see pleasant light to moderate winds. Sunday the winds are expected to crank back up again and long range has Tuesday through the end of next week seeing light to moderate southerlies. Well we’ll see?
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: 19 NW today, less than 10 tomorrow from the NW and less than 10 on Saturday from the SE.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: 21 today NW. 14 tomorrow from the NW and Saturday very light winds from the SE.
The Baja side of the central Sea: around 19 NW today and then light NE Friday and Saturday.
Puerto Escondido: 16 today from the NE then less than 10 Friday and Saturday from the NE.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Around 19 today NE, then around 10 from the NE on Friday and Saturday.
La Paz: Moderate NE today, light SE tomorrow and then light westerlies on Saturday.
The East Cape: around 15 today NW then less than 10 from the NE on Friday and Saturday.
The Sonoran passage south from Guaymas to Mazatlan to half way: 18-20 today NW then 10-12 from the NW for Friday and Saturday. The second half could see some light SW winds for the 3-day forecast period.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan moderate NW today, light NW tomorrow and back to around 14 from the NW on Saturday.
Puerto Vallarta: 7-10 from the north for the 3-day forecast period.
Cabo Corrienties mostly light NW winds for the next 3 days.
South of the cape mostly light SW winds for the 3-day forecast period.
