Tuesday, December 31, 2013 NEW YEARS EVE

Voice to Text

Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see the high pressure off the west coast is keeping the Sea of Cortez free of any cloudiness.
To the south that nasty area of disturbed weather to the west of Cabo Corrienties this morning continues to send ragged, scattered bands of wet clouds toward the Mexican Riviera. This morning the plume is pretty much centered on Cabo Corrienties.
Interesting this plume is acting much like a winter jet in that the plume extends from just off shore, crosses Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico, passed over Florida and extends well out into the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of the United States. The Jet stream analysis is showing the winter jet, aka the Pineapple Express still has not arrived in the Eastern Pacific basin this winter.
The reporting station in Puerto Vallarta reported 1.22 inches of rain yesterday.
Looking south to the Gulf of Tehuantepec where high pressure on the SW Gulf of Mexico is funneling gale force winds through the Chivela pass into the Gulf this morning. The winds should abate later this afternoon. Another wind event is progged to arrive Thursday through Saturday.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where high pressure off the west coast will be sending all the wet weather to the north keeping the Great Northwest green and wet and California dry. The models are consistent in showing they are not sure when the high will break down and it looks like the first couple of weeks next year will most likely remain dry for California.
Not much in the way of any changes in southern California with seasonally warm and dry in the forecast for the next week.
Looking over to the southwest where not much of a change in their weather is forecast either. There will be several weak systems moving through the Great Basin that will bring some cloudiness over the next couple of days along with some minor cooling, but that’s it.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence in general the Sea of Cortez should be seeing 18-20 knot winds for the 3-day forecast period.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period. The predominate winds will all be from the NW.
The northern Sea: 16-18 for the 3-day forecast period.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: 20 today then 17-18 for the next two days.
The Baja side of the central Sea: 20 today then around 18 for the next two days.
Puerto Escondido: NE winds in the 15-18 knot ranges for the 3-day forecast period.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands. 13-16 for the next 3 days.
La Paz: 20 today from the NW then 15-18 from the NE for the next two.
The East Cape: 15-18 NW for the 3-day forecast period.
The Sonoran passage south from Guaymas to Mazatlan half way to Mazatlan 16-20 for the next 3 days. The second half: light NW for the 3-day forecast period.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan 12 today NE, less than 10 tomorrow from the SW then around 13 NE on Thursday.
Puerto Vallarta: light NE for the next 3 days.
Cabo Corrienties: light SE today and tomorrow and light NW on Thursday.
Manzanillo: light SE today, light NE tomorrow and light NW on Thursday.
South of Manzanillo mostly light NW for the next 3 days.
As far as cloudiness and the chances of rain there are no indications that that moisture plume will dry up over the 3-day forecast period.
