Voice to Text

Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that high pressure off the west coast continues to keep the skies clear over the Sea of Cortez.
Looking south a different picture. That area of disturbed weather to the west of the Mexican Riviera continues to send heavy bands of wet clouds toward the coast. Mazatlan looks to have clear skies but south to around Zihuatanejo heavy overcast with pretty much sold rain producing clouds. Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo have reported almost ¾ inch of rain in the past 24 hours.
Further south strong high pressure building southward into southern Mexico behind a cold front in the SW Gulf of Mexico will tighten the gradient through the Chivela pass and allow winds to reach minimal gale force in the Gulf tomorrow morning through Wednesday morning. The winds will weaken briefly during the day Wednesday then on Thursday another Tehuantepecker will persist into Saturday.
That’s what is gong on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where high pressure off the west coast is diverting all storm weather over the top into western Washington. They can expect to see a break in the weather next weekend however in the meantime mostly light rain in the low lands and snow in the Cascades.
In northern California no significant changes are forecast through the week. The upper ridge will remain near the west for most of the week continuing to produce a seemingly endless string of dry and mild days and clear and cool night.
The models are in agreement that the upper ridge will retrograde near the end of the week allowing a system in the Gulf of Alaska to slide SE into the western conus. However none of the models are now in agreement whether this will bring some much needed rain to northern California this year. Perhaps late in the week next year. We’ll see?
Yesterday I had an email asking what retrograde means. In weather speak retrograde means to go opposite from the normal west/east flow over the continental United States. If a high or low retrogrades it means the system is moving to the west.
OK, looking now to southern California where the Santa Ana winds have weakened some but will remain locally gusterly today. The winds combined with the very dry air mass over the region will keep critical fire danger in place today.
The system moving through the Great Northwest will bring some minor cooling this weekend but in the mean time they can expect to see above normal temperatures throughout the week.
Looking now over to the southwest where the tight gradient between the Fence and the Great Basin will be producing breezy to gusterly conditions especially in the afternoons hours this week. Temperatures today will be similar to those yesterday with a few degrees of warming tomorrow and a few more on Thursday. A minor cooling trend is on tap for next weekend.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like the central Sea will be seeing one more day of strong winds. Tomorrow it looks like tomorrow and New Years day will see moderate winds around 20 knots or a bit less.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period. In general all the winds will be from the NW.
The northern Sea: 21 today. 17 tomorrow and 13 on New Years
Day.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: 28 today and around 20 tomorrow and New Years Day.
The Baja side of the central Sea: 29 today and around 20 tomorrow and New Years Day.
Puerto Escondido: 26 today, around 20 tomorrow and 14 from the NE on New Years Day.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands. 20 today, 13-15 tomorrow and New Years Day from the NE.
La Paz: 26 today, 20 tomorrow and around 15 on New Years Day from the NE.
The East Cape: 24 today, 21 tomorrow and 16 on New Years Day.
The Sonoran passage south from Guaymas to Mazatlan half way should see around 22 today, then 18 tomorrow from the NE and 16 from the SE on New Years Day. The second half light NW winds for the 3-day forecast period.
Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan today 17, 13 tomorrow from the NE and 11 on New Years Day from the NW.
Puerto Vallarta area: less than 10 for the 3-day forecast period.
Cabo Corrienties: around 12 today from the SE and then light NW for the next two days.
South of Cabo Corrienties: light NE today, light SE tomorrow and then light NE on New Years Day.
