Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the Sea of Cortez has been cloud free for the past 24 hours.
Looking south to the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera where out in the Pacific there is considerable cloudiness that is being deflected to the north and south by high pressure off the west coast. To the south these clouds are being steered by the west-east flow in the basin and are scooting around the high and making landfall between Puerto Vallarta and Zihuatanejo this morning. In this image I can see that some of these multi-level clouds are very thick with high tops indicating there is a chance of getting some rain from them.
They have continued to come ashore for the past 24 hours and it looks like this will continue all day.
To the south strong winds continue to funnel through the Chivela pass into the Gulf of Tehuantepec with models are indicating stronger winds today. They are then forecast to diminish gradually through Saturday. The models are also showing a strong Tehuantepecker setting up on Tuesday through Wednesday as a strong cold front moves across the western Gulf of Mexico.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where a low pressure system will approach the Great Northwest today ushering in rainy weather across western Washington and northwestern Oregon, while snow showers can be expected in the Cascades.
In northern California high pressure off the coast will keep the above mentioned low to the north. The airmass over northern California will remain unseasonably dry through the weekend and well into next week. as a footnote: These very dry conditions are raising fire weather concerns in the north state.
In southern California above normal temperatures will continue through next week with only slight cooling on Saturday. The gradient between the Nevada plateau and southern California will continue be the impetus for the gusterly winds in the afternoons.
Looking now over to the southwest where dry conditions, seasonable cool nights and mild daytime temperatures will continue into next week. A weak low will move through the region tomorrow night and Sunday with little fanfare, just some high clouds. Thereafter ridging will build back into next week with dry conditions continuing and temperatures warming to above normal levels.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like the strong winds will continue today then the entire Sea will see light winds tomorrow then Sunday the strong winds will crank back up again but not quite as strong.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: 21 today NW, 7 tomorrow NE and back to around 21NW on Sunday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: 23 today NW, 12 tomorrow NW and around 21 on Sunday from the NW.
The Baja side of the central Sea: 25 today NW. 13 tomorrow NE and Sunday around 21 from the NW.
Puerto Escondido: 23 today NW, 12-15 Saturday and Sunday from the NE.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands. 17 today NE the 12-13 NE on Saturday and Sunday.
La Paz: 20 today NW then around 14 Saturday and Sunday.
East Cape: 17 today then 13-14 from the NW over the weekend.
The Sonoran passage south from Guaymas to Mazatlan: south from Guaymas half way the winds will be ballpark 20 today and tomorrow and around 15 from the NW on Sunday. The second half mostly light NE winds.
The Mexican Riviera: light winds for the 3-day forecast period. Today NE, tomorrow SE and Sunday NE again. Puerto Vallarta light SE today then less than 10 from the NE over the weekend. Cabo Corrienties light SE over the 3-day forecast period. South of the cape mostly light SW breezes.
