Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the Sea of Cortez has been pretty much cloud free for the past 24 hours. That moisture plume has been plutoed to just a somewhat stationary area of cloudiness off the west coast of the Baja peninsula. Abundant sunshine is the call today for the Sea of Cortez. Albeit a bit windy and I’ll get to that in a minute.
Looking south to the west coast of Mexico where again I can’t see any clouds along the coast until Central America this morning.
The only thing we have weather-wise in our hood is a Tehuantepecker building in the Gulf. Strong northerly winds are currently progressing south across the SW Gulf of Mexico and in association with a rapidly moving cold front will surge through the Chevila pass minimum gale force winds by sunrise this morning. By this afternoon they will build to storm force (40-50 knots) with seas to 21 feet. The storm conditions will continue through sunrise tomorrow then gale force winds of 35-45 throughout the afternoon. Wednesday the gradient will gradually weaken and the winds should quickly diminish to the 10-15 ranges by early Thursday night.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where at the top of this image I can see that folks in the Great Northwest will be needing an umbrella just about every other day next week. Today rain in the low lands and more snow to the pack in the Cascades.
In northern California it will be warm and dry for the first part of the week. Wednesday a cool weather system will moving into the north state bringing temperatures down around 10 degrees from today.
The system will start to drop south late Wednesday. In the wake of this departing low high pressure will rebuild over northern California and Nevada. This will result in very strong winds, especially in the bay area.
In Southern California warm and dry today. The 1040 high of the Nevada plateau and 1024 in southern California will produce a classic Santa Ana wind event today into the LA basin and to a lesser degree the San Diego area into tomorrow.
Cooler temperatures will develop Tuesday and Wednesday as low pressure moves inland across southern California. Thursday that low in northern will have dropped into southern California as a closed low bringing much colder air a slight chance of rain to the southland.
High pressure moving in from the Pacific will build inland across all of California later next week resulting in a warming trend next weekend.
Looking now over to the southwest where high pressure will build in from the west and bring warmer temperatures to the area through Wednesday. Thursday a cold front will drop in from the north bringing much colder temperatures and a chance of valley rain and mountain snow Thursday night into Friday.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like this strong wind event will last into the early morning hours tomorrow then the next couple of days the Sea will be seeing ballpark 17-20 knot winds.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period. All winds from the NW.
The northern Sea: 30 today, 19 tomorrow. And 12 on Tuesday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: 25 today and then around 20 from the next two.
The Baja side of the central Sea: 30 today then around 20 for the next two.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands. 20 from the NE today, 12-14 from the NE for Monday and Tuesday.
La Paz: 24 NW today, 15-17 NW for the next two days.
East Cape: 18-22 for the 3-day forecast period.
The southern passage north from Mazatlan to Guaymas.17-20 to about half way. Then low to mid teens from the second half for the 3-day forecast period.
Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan to Cabo Corrienties mid teens from the NW fro the 3-day forecast period. South of Cabo Corrienties mostly light SW winds.
