Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that moisture plume is still with us albeit not quite as robust. The plume, in general, is being steered by a short weak jet that appears to be swinging a bit to the south this morning. The plume is very wide and broken this morning, stretching the length of Baja. This morning the skies look clear over the northern Sea to the northern crossing and whispys south of that to the cape. Behind it, to the west, it looks like there will be periods of sun, patches of dark bottomed clouds and periods of whispys moving across today.
Looking to the south to the west coast of Mexico where there is some cloudiness between Zihuatanejo and Acapulco and some thunderbumper activity in the Gulf of Tehuantepec this morning.
Gale force winds will continue through sunrise this morning in the Tehuantepec and quickly diminish below gale force by noon. Today should see 20-25 knot winds with this evening becoming light.
The northern flow will crank up again late Saturday night increasing to minimal gale force of 35-45 knots on Sunday night and persisting through sunrise on Tuesday.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where the Great Northwest is cold, freezing cold. A system moving through today will bring more snow to the Cascades and freezing rain to Portland.
In extreme northern California very cold rain and then pretty much dry from the Bay Area south. No snow is forecast over the weekend for the Tahoe area.
In southern California a fast moving “inside slider” low will move through the region today bringing cooler temperatures to the southland today.
Tonight through the weekend the gradient will turn toward the coast with a thermal trof setting up along the California coast giving cause to gusterly conditions to around 55 mph in the mountains and foothills. In general the southland should see a slow warming trend starting early next week.
Looking now over to the southwest where a fast moving low will be moving through the southwest today will be bringing valley rain and mountain snow early today with most of it to the east along the New Mexico border. After slightly cooler temperatures today and Saturday they can expect a warm-up and dry conditions from Sunday through early next week.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence today will be the “lull before the storm”. Brisk winds in the low 20s for most locations today in the central and southern seas.
The weekend will see a brief two-day wind event with the strongest winds tomorrow. The bar over the Great Basin will be in the 1035-1040 ranges with closely stacked isobars between there and the cape region which will see bar reading in the 1014 ranges. This gradient will justify the 30+ knot winds forecast for the weekend.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: will see light NE today, 32 NW tomorrow and 27NW on Sunday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: today NW around 22, Tomorrow 32NW and Sunday 25NW.
The Baja side of the central Sea including Puerto Escondido: NW for the 3-day forecast period. Today 22, tomorrow 35, and Sunday 27.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands.
18NE today, 23NW tomorrow, 19NW on Sunday.
La Paz: all NW, 23 today, 31 tomorrow and 24 on Sunday.
The East Cape: all NW. 25 today, 29 tomorrow, and 23 on Sunday.
The southern passage north from Mazatlan to Guaymas: strong winds for the 3-day forecast period to about half way. Today 22-24, tomorrow 28-32 and Sunday 21-25. The rest of the passage mostly high teens for the 3-day forecast period.
Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan today and tomorrow 24-26NW, Sunday around 16. Puerto Vallarta mid teens from the NW for the 3-day forecast period. Cabo Corrienties about the same thing with very light winds on Sunday. South of Cabo Corrienties mostly light SW winds for the next 3 days.
