Thursday, November 28, 2013 turkey day!

Voice to Text

Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that moisture plume that originates within the ITCZ/Monsoon trough around 140 continues to send clouds over the Baja peninsula. This image is showing the plume becoming a bit weaker on the far western end. The plume is also slowly sliding south so if this pattern continues skies will clear from the north this morning in the central Sea and this afternoon in the southern Sea. The plume resembles our winter Pineapple Express but no jet is associated with this plume.
Looking south to the Mexican Riviera I can see a little bit of thunderbumper action just off shore at Zihuatanejo this morning and these are the only clouds I can see along the mainland coast this morning.
In the Gulf of Tehuantepec the Tehuantepecker has cranked up to storm force winds in the 45-50 knot ranges. They are forecast to continue all day dipping to gale force by tomorrow and finally pooping out on Sunday morning. In the mean time they will be seeing significant wave heights of 22-24 feet during the storm force winds. Out in the Pacific and downstream about 800 miles an impressive NE swell of around 8 feet has been generated by the winds in the Gulf.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north where it is cold and will be getting colder this weekend. Meantime turkey day along the west coast should be dry. In the Great Northwest a cold low will be moving down the British Columbia coast and arrive in Washington on Sunday bringing first a couple of hours of heavy rain then snow down to valley floors.
In northern California the weather headliner is “Unseasonable cold temperatures next week”. They are still a bit iffy about what that low on the British Columbia coast will do when it arrives early next week. The only thing the models agree on is, “Cold weather”, 15-20 degrees cooler than normal. Northern California could see some rain or even low level snow. We’ll see?
In southern California there is a low lurking off the coast that will probably bring some rain along the coast on Friday otherwise dry with near normal temperatures through Monday. Then that low will sag south far enough to bring colder weather, a chance of rain and mountain snow Tuesday into Thursday as the trough moves through to the north.
Looking now over to the southwest where dry conditions with seasonable daytime temperatures will prevail into early next week. That British Columbia low will bring a chance of valley rain and mountain snow and much colder temperatures around the middle of next week.
So it looks like the west coast will be cold and dry for this Thanksgiving Day. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like Thanksgiving and tomorrow will continue to see pleasant winds then this weekend the strong northerlies return.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: low teens today from the NE. Mid teens tomorrow from the NW and then strong NW winds on Saturday from the NW.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: very light southerlies today. Mid teens tomorrow from the NW and around 27 from the NW on Saturday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: low teens today from the NE, mid teens tomorrow from the NW and then around 30 from the NW on Saturday.
Puerto Escondido: mid teens today from the SE. Mid teens tomorrow from the NE, and then around 25 from the NW on Saturday.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands.
Light NE today, mid teens tomorrow again from the NE then around 18 on Saturday from the NW.
La Paz: light today from the NE. Mid teens tomorrow from the NW and up to 24 on Saturday from the NW.
The East Cape: just about the same picture. Light NE today, high teens tomorrow from the NW and then on Saturday around 21 from the NW.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan around 15 knots for the 3-day forecast period. Today SE, tomorrow and Saturday NW.
Puerto Vallarta: light to moderate NW for the 3-day forecast period.
Cabo Corrienties and south mostly light SW for the next 3 days.
