Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see the cape region and the southern crossing are still seeing clouds from the outer swirl of Tropical Depression Sonia which in now over land in Sinaloa . This image is showing the clouds following her inland and it appears that the cape area will clear this morning and by this evening the southern crossing to Mazatlan will also clear.
From a bit north of La Paz this image is showing the skies are pretty much clear for the rest of the Sea.
Looking now over to the west coast of Mexico along the Mexican Riviera it looks like there are a few thumpers working mostly off shore between Manzanillo and Zihuatanejo this morning with nothing on shore.
The wind event in the Gulf of Tehuantepec is over and the winds there have diminished to the 20-25 knot ranges and will continue to decrease to 20 or less later today.
Now, hopefully this will be the last item in our Tropical Kitchen this long tropical season.
Tropical Depression Sonia is now inland over Sinaloa dumping enough rain to cause some concern for flooding. Government officials said that heavy rain could extend to several other western and northern Mexican states. The rains should diminish somewhat today as Sonia winds down and becomes a remnant low this evening or early tomorrow.
In September, Mexico suffered its worst flooding since records began when storms Manuel and Ingrid converged from the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico, killing more than 150 people and causing damage estimated at around $6 billion.
Last month, that goofy storm Hurricane Raymond caused some flooding as it approached the Pacific resort cities of Acapulco and Zihuantanejo, but no deaths or major damage was reported.
And the fat lady: Will she finally sing the swan song for the 2013 hurricane season? I’m finally thinking a resounding, “YEP”! Actually I cheated a bit and looked long range at the Navy’s charts.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where a couple of lows are bringing weather to the west coast today.
The first is a wet system moving though the Great Northwest this morning bringing rain and more snow to the Cascades.
The other is a rather dry system moving through central and southern California today and this evening. It will bring a chance of some scattered light showers until the system moves east tomorrow. High pressure will fill in Wednesday bringing sunny days.
In the meantime high pressure in the 1025 ranges is over the Nevada plateau and the bar over the southland is around 1003 and this is setting the stage for a Santa Ana wind event for the L.A. basin. These strong winds along with the low humidity and dry fuels will elevate the fire danger through Wednesday. Humidity levels will fall to around 10% by tomorrow afternoon.
Looking now over to the southwest where that Pacific system will bring gusterly winds this afternoon and then showers to the area this evening into Tuesday morning. Needles has been issued a high wind advisory from the National Weather Service for today.
The southwest can expect dry conditions and cold mornings followed by a warming trend as high pressure builds into the area late in the week.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on his side of the Fence It looks like we are in for a two-day wind event starting tomorrow. Meantime today the northern Sea will be seeing strong winds to around 20 and the central Sea light winds in the low teens today.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: around 20 today from the SW then near 30 tomorrow and Wednesday NW.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: very light NW today, around 20 tomorrow and picking up to around 27 on Wednesday from the NW.
The Baja side of the central Sea: low teens today from the NE, low 20s tomorrow from the NW and up to 28 on Wednesday from the NW.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Mid teens for the next 3 days. Today SW and then moderate northerlies for Tuesday and Wednesday.
The East Cape: NW for the 3-day forecast period. light today, high teens tomorrow and around 20 on Wednesday.
Mexican Riviera: in general mostly light SE. the exceptions are Puerto Vallarta and Cabo Corrienties which will see around 20 knot southerlies today.
