Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that late yesterday the cape region starting seeing some cloudiness from Tropical Depression 18Echo. The overcast conditions continues this morning with cloud cover in the southern crossing area as well, and as far south as Cabo Corrienties.
The rest of the Sea looks to be pretty much cloud free.
Looking south of Cabo Corrienties this morning the coast is clear to Central America.
In the Gulf of Tehuantepec we have a “minipecker”. We all know what a Tehuantepecker is: a wind event that lasts for a couple of days with storm or gale force winds. Well a “minipecker” just lasts a very short period of time. There is a strong cold front moving through the western Gulf of Mexico and will give cause to 40 knot winds funneling through the Chivela pass into the Gulf tonight and diminishing by tomorrow night. Actually I just made up the word “minipecker”. It seemed appropriate though.
Now in our Tropical Kitchen this morning we have Tropical Depression 18E that is forecast to briefly become a minimal tropical storm today and to continue slowly heading toward the cape Tomorrow as it approaches the cape the current forecast is for it to downgrade to a Tropical Depression again and slowly just brush the cape and make landfall around Topa Labomba Monday afternoon as a Tropical Depression. It is unlikely that the winds in the cape area will be more than perhaps 30 or 35 more likely less. Rain is a consideration however none of the forecasts have mentioned it so it will most likely be minimal. We’ll see?

That being said this image of the storm is showing a lot of very cold high topped clouds in this system. Also yesterday it only moved 56 miles. It is currently 338 miles SW of the cape. At this speed of around 4 mph it will take almost 80 hours to reach the cape so it had better speed up to make the forecast schedule. I just checked the latest track and it showed the storm picking up speed tomorrow as it becomes a tropical storm and arriving at the cape early Monday morning.
So that’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where a big honk’n cold front is expected to usher wet weather into the Great Northwest today along with heavy snow in the Cascades throughout the day.
Rain is expected to stretch from Washington to just north of the bay area in California.
Southern California a cooling trend will begin today as a weak low system to the southwest passes overhead and a trough of low pressure approaches from the NW. They will have to wait until next week when high pressure rebuilds over the Great Basin to warm up.
Looking now over to the southwest where a pair of eastern Pacific weather systems will bring a few showers to the area tomorrow morning through Monday night. It is not going to warm up much and they will have to wait until around mid next week when high pressure rebuilds over the basin to have much of a warming trend.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like most of the Sea will be seeing light or moderate NE or NW today and moderate to strong SE tomorrow.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: light NE today. Light SE tomorrow. Strong SW on Monday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: moderate NW today. Moderate SE tomorrow and light SE on Monday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: Moderate NW today, Strong SE tomorrow, and light NE on Monday.
Puerto Escondido: moderate NE today, light SE tomorrow and moderate SW on Monday.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands. Moderate north or NW for the next 3 days.
La Paz: moderate NW today, strong northerlies tomorrow and moderate SW on Monday.
The East Cape: strong to 20 NW today and tomorrow and light NE on Monday.
Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta will be seeing some effects of the Tropical Depression when It come through some time tomorrow so winds could be strong to the mid 20s.
Today light SW. South of Cabo Corrienties mostly light SW for the 3-day forecast period.
