Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that in general the skies have cleared for the Sea of Cortez and this morning the only clouds I can see is a light whispys train moving off of Tropical Depression 18 Echo which is 394 miles south of the cape this morning. The train is passing just south of the cape and then over to around Puerto Vallarta this am. More on 18 Echo in a moment.
Looking south to the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera where it looks like there is some thunderbumper activity around Cabo Corrienties this morning, south of there the coast looks clear to Central America this morning.
Looking out along the ITCZ/Monsoon trough I can see considerable thunderbumper activity all along the zone to around 135 this morning.
It’s continues to be quiet in the Gulf of Tehuantepec this morning with winds less than 10 knots forecast for the 3-day forecast period.
Now in our Tropical Kitchen this morning: At 2am this morning the National Hurricane Center upgraded invest 17E to tropical Depression 18 Echo. The current thinking is that this system will be upgraded later today to a tropical storm later with the name Sonia, our 18th named storm of the year. Current thinking is not very enthusiastic about this system making it beyond a low-end tropical storm during the next couple of days.
The “official” National Hurricane Center track has her moving north through the weekend and early Sunday morning swinging NE toward the cape being just south of the cape on Monday morning and making landfall near Mazatlan on Tuesday.
We know from experience this season that these tracks can change by the hour so best advise would be to plan for tropical storm conditions, (that could be winds to 73 mph) in the vicinity of the cape, east and west Capes and the mainland from Los Mochas to Puerto Vallarta next Monday and Tuesday. We will be more closely defining the track throughout the weekend.
Hopefully the folks in the Ha-ha are taking this seriously and putting out the word that early next week would be a bad day to plan a picnic any where near the cape.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where the storm door is open in the Great Northwest. Seattle can expect to see rain and the Cascades several inches of new snow over the weekend starting today.
Northern California will stay dry and rather cool with overnight lows in the 40s through out the weekend.
In Southern California the high pressure over the Great Basin is giving cause to gusterly conditions along the coast. It will be sunny and warm today but this weekend the weather will turn to the cool side again as the high weakens as a low moves in from the NW, and not warm back up again until the high pressure rebuilds over the Great Basin next week,
Looking now over to the southwest where they will be getting a break from those 3-dog nights over the weekend however bring the dogs back early next week. They could see some rain to the north in the higher elevations on Sunday as a low moves through the region Sunday and Monday.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like today will be the last day to these strong NW winds with the weekend looking to be much more pleasant.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: around 22 today, 12 tomorrow from the NE and 12 on Sunday from the SW.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: strong today to 27 from the NW, 17 tomorrow NW and then light SE on Sunday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: strong today to 26 from the NW, around 16 tomorrow then brisk again on Sunday from the SE to around 20.
Puerto Escondido: NW to 23 today. 15 from the NE tomorrow and around 19 from the SE on Sunday.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. 18-23 today from the NW, 13-17 tomorrow and then light NE on Sunday.
The East Cape: NW for the 3-day forecast period. 22 today, 18 tomorrow and 17 on Sunday.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan today moderate NW, tomorrow Light SW and then on Sunday around 20 from the SE.
Puerto Vallarta light NW today, light SW tomorrow and then around 20 on Sunday from the SE. And about the same at Cabo Corrienties. South of Cabo Corrienties mostly light SE winds.
