Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see some remnant
clouds from our old pal Ray passing over the cape region this morning. Nothing in these clouds look like rain producers this morning. The clouds also pretty much blanket the southern crossing this morning.
It is also completely overcast here in the cove this morning with very dark bottom fluffys. The satellite image is not showing these clouds. I discovered them by using the old weatherman trick…I looked outside.
Looking south along the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera where it is pretty much solid overcast this morning from Mazatlan to Acapulco. The responsible thunderbumper activity is mostly off shore.
Further south the Gulf of Tehuantepec remains quiet this morning with winds in the 5-10 knot ranges forecast for the 3-day forecast period.
I was just about to close the door on the Tropical Kitchen for the season with Ray, you remember Ray the storm that would not go away, finally being plutoed to a remnant low and parked SW of the cape.
Well, yesterday morning a low popped up around 400 miles west of Manzanillo and by mid morning the Navy had assigned it invest 97Echo. This storm will become our next hurricane, Sonia, and all the models are showing her tracking due north and arriving at the cape in a couple of days and briefly entering the Sea of Cortez as a hurricane.
Beyond the obvious problems associated with a hurricane in the hood we have 164 boats with mostly unseasoned sailors, in the Baja Ha Ha forecast to arrive about the same time. Hopefully those folks that make the decisions of “go/no-go” with give very serious consideration to parking in Turtle Bay until this late season hurricane blows over. As unpredictable as the tracks have been this season it would be an act of foolishness to think that this storm could not move down the Pacific side of the peninsula.
The old axiom “Better be safe than sorry.” certainly applies here.
So we keep the Tropical Kitchen into November: Very unusual!
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where the storm door is open in the Great Northwest today with a cold front moving through bringing rain to as far south as Eureka California and high elevation snow to the Cascades.
In northern California it will remain cool, actually cold and dry into next week. The expected storm on the horizon for next week now looks like it will take a northerly path and enter the storm door in the Seattle area.
In southern California high pressure will continue to warm the daytime highs though tomorrow. Overnight lows will remain chilly. A cooling trend will begin Saturday through Monday then a warming trend is progged for the later part of the week for the southland.
Looking now over to the south west where dry conditions will prevail into early nest week. More 3-dog+ nights are in the forecast with overnight lows in the 40s.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like the two-day-NW blow will be over on Saturday and what looks like a pleasant weekend for most of the Sea. The fly in the ointment could be that storm in the cape region.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: 20-22 today and tomorrow and light NW on Saturday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: 23 today, 26 tomorrow and then around 18 on Saturday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: about the same with 20 today, 26 tomorrow and then mid teens on Saturday.
Puerto Escondido: mid teens today from the north. 23 tomorrow NW, and Saturday moderate NE.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands. All NW 16 today, 18 tomorrow, and 12 on Saturday.
La Paz: strong NW winds for the 3-day forecast period. Today 20, tomorrow 25, and Saturday around 17.
The East Cape: strong NW winds in the 18-23 knot ranges for the next 3 days.
The Mexican Riviera: light NW Cabo Corrienties north. Cabo Corrienties mid to high teens for the next 3 days. Manzanillo 15-18 SE for the next 3 days, and Zihuatanejo light SW.
Don’t forget, those of you having trick or treaters tonight, you will have another crowd on dia de muerta on the 2nd of November so buy extra candy.

73s Y’all
