Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the Sea of Cortez has again been cloud free for the past 24 hours.
Looking south along the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera I can see a long light stringy moisture plume moving off of tropical storm Raymond and moving between Puerto Vallarta and Cabo Corrienties this morning and I can see a small thunderbumper building in the Zihuatanejo area this morning and that’s pretty much it for any clouds along the coast this morning.
Further south in the Gulf of Tehuantepec the winds have decreased below gale force, however the northerly winds are in the 20-30 knot ranges with seas 8-12 feet. The winds will decrease a little more tomorrow then 20 knots or less on Monday with seas less than 8 feet.
In out Tropical Kitchen this morning the National Hurricane Center issued it’s 26th advisory on Raymond. He is still a tropical storm 591 miles SW of the cape this morning. The official forecast is for Ray to continue moving west today and tomorrow as a tropical storm then intensify to a himicane again Sunday evening and hook a hard right on Monday and head in the general direction of Baja on Tuesday. The latest forecast (#26) showed Ray doing a “Crazy Ivan” Wednesday and heading back due east toward the mainland rather than the earlier forecast track of NE. I’m sure that over this weekend and the next couple of days we will see the track change many times.
I noted that one of the bloggers in the La Paz area is saying that, “that same (I think he meant some.) areas of Baja, in the Comondu region should brace for even more rain beginning Tuesday and becoming heavy at times on Wednesday”.
Well maybe yes, maybe no, the storm would still be around 500 miles SW of the cape on Tuesday. Me, I’m not going to try to second guess this goofy storm.
Well, that’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where high pressure is expected to build along the coast of southern California today. Keeping the temperatures in the southland in the 80s and 90s.
The Great Northwest will avoid any rain today however there is a strong low that will be dipping down from British Columbia. This is not a particularly wet storm but it will be cold. Today is the seventh day in a row that Seattle has been completely fogged in. They are calling it “Fogmageddon”. It is a dense low street hugging fog, with the tops of most building visible. Great photo opps for folks working on the upper floors of office buildings.
There is a slim possibility that this British Columbia system could bring showers to northern California tomorrow.
That system will also cool off the southland and bring a chance of some rain to the southern California mountains late Monday into Monday evening.
Looking now over to the southwest where weak high pressure will provide a milder than normal weekend. That British Columbia low will end up near Reno on Monday morning then very slowly exit the Great Basin by Thursday. Tuesday and Wednesday the Tucson area could see some rain. Maybe, perhaps .
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like moderate NW winds today, light NE tomorrow and then most likely the last day of southerly winds for the season on Monday as that area around Yuma to Needles has cooled off and the thermal low there has pretty much run its course for the year. You have probably heard me mention that historically the 28th of October is the end of our summer southerlies. You can almost bank on it.
So, here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: around 18NW today, half that tomorrow from the NE and low teens on Monday from the SW.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: around 19 today from the NW. less than 10 tomorrow from the west and then Monday low teens from the SE.
The Baja side of the central Sea: around 16 today from the NW, 10-11 tomorrow from the NE and then on Monday mid teens from the SE.
Puerto Escondido: low teens for the 3-day forecast period. Today NE, the next two days SE.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Light winds for the 3-day forecast period. NE today and Sunday, Monday very light SW.
The East Cape: around 15 today from the NW. 11 tomorrow also NW. and Monday very light NE.
The Mexican Riviera: very light winds for the 3-day forecast period. Mazatlan to Cabo Corrienties mostly NW, south of the cape mostly SW.
