Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that our 15th named storm of the year, Octave, is blanketing the southern Sea with clouds this morning. The southern crossing also has heavy cloud cover. Right now it looks like the cloud cover extends south as far as Santa Rosalia this morning. More on Octave in a minute.
Looking south to the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera where Cabo Corrienties south looks clear along the coast to Acapulco where there is a nice thumper over it this morning.
Further south in the Gulf of Tehuantepec the remnants of a Tropical Wave over western Central America is forecast to bring in strong northerlies to the Gulf later this morning lasting until tomorrow night. They will be in the 20-25 knot ranges.
Now looking into our Tropical Kitchen this morning. Well, the waiting game is over. Last night invest 94E became depressed and 6 hours later it was upgraded to tropical storm Octave.
The consensus of the computer models is now for Octave, which is now 346 miles SW of the cape, to continue to march north then skirt well to the west of the cape tomorrow afternoon then on Tuesday swing toward the Baja peninsula and approach Mag Bay and colder waters on Wednesday morning as a post tropical remnant low. If this initial track were followed the low would pass over Concepcion Bay on Thursday. The cone of influence being a couple hundred miles north and south of Concepcion Bay.
Very interesting this storm is pretty much following the same track as Hurricane Paul did exactly one year ago. It doesn’t look like this system will intensify into a hurricane though. Max winds are forecast to be around 50 knots for the next couple of days.
So it looks like the southern Sea is already clouding up and it’s likely that we will see some rain as this system moves over the peninsula. I checked the web cam at one of the hotels at 5am and it showed bright sunshine, people lounging by the pool and small sail boats in the bay. The image said 5am on the 13th of October. I’ve discovered that they put these stored sunny day images up when they are having or expecting a storm so tourist won’t be influenced by the bad weather when booking reservations. Very clever these hotel managers!
Also in the Tropical Kitchen this morning there is a low SW of Octave that is producing an area of showers and thunderbumpers. The National Hurricane Center forecasters are giving this a slim chance of any further development.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where high pressure off the west coast is keeping the storm door well to the north, with no storms on the horizon. Oregon and all of California will see a slight warming trend over the weekend. Besides some low clouds and fog along the coast that’s it for the west coast this morning.
Looking now over to the southwest where a low will brush the Mohave desert and northern Arizona today leading to locally breezy conditions followed by minor cooling on Monday. They can expect dry and mild conditions through at least the end of the week.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like the Sea will be seeing strong southerlies today. Tomorrow moderate southerlies and on Tuesday light NE or perhaps SE.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: Strong to 18 knots today and then moderate NW on Monday and Tuesday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: SE today around 20. Tomorrow SE in the mid teens and Tuesday light NE.
The Baja side of the central Sea: SE today and tomorrow. Today around 20, tomorrow low teens then on Tuesday afternoon light NE.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. NE for the 3-day forecast period. 19-22 today, around 17 tomorrow and 14-15 on Tuesday.
The East Cape: light to moderate NE for the 3-day forecast period.
The Mexican Riviera: mostly light SW for the next 3 days.
