Looking down into the Sea this morning first with the 24 hour loop I can see that the Sea of Cortez has been pretty much cloud free for the past 24 hours.
Looking over at Sonora where it has been relatively calm over there as well for the past 24 hours.
Looking south to the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera and for the first time, I think all summer, the skies are virtually clear along the coast all the way to Central America this morning.
Not much to see in our Tropical Kitchen this morning. A couple of weak wanna-be lows that have little or no chance of becoming a storm are off the west coast of the mainland. This pattern is reminiscent of the winding down of our tropical season. I’m seeing some of the SST charts (Sea Surface Temperatures) change to orange where a week ago they were red indicating some cooling of the Sea in our hood. We’ll give it a couple more weeks before we bring out the fat lady though.
In a word, I’d say our hood is “tranquil” this morning.
Looking now north to the west coast of America where the storm door is open off the Oregon and Washington coast. Several storms will move through the region today and tomorrow bringing serious wet to mostly Washington. Flooding, debris flows and rising water in the streams and rivers are concerns in the Great Northwest this weekend. As one of the storm moves east today it will be bringing heavy snow to the Rockies.
Northern California will be seeing rain starting this morning and lasting through tomorrow. Snow levels will around the passes.
In Southern California it will be warm and sunny today. A low trough will move in tomorrow and bring gusterly winds to the deserts and mountains and fog along the coast through Thursday. High pressure is progged to then rebuild for Friday and next weekend with warm and dry conditions returning.
Looking over to the southwest where this image is showing clear skies and the forecast is for temperatures to remain near seasonal readings through much of next week. A weak trough will push across the region bringing slightly cooler temperatures on Friday.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like moderate winds for the Sea, the Mexican Riviera and the outside passage for the 3-day forecast period.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: low teens for the next 3 days. Today and tomorrow NE, Tuesday SE.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: is forecast to see 18-20 today and tomorrow but I’m backing off that and saying 15-18, then light NW on Tuesday.
The Baja side of the central Sea: Mid teens for the 3-day forecast period from the NE.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. In general moderate NE for the 3-day forecast period. Tuesday could see light southerlies in the San Lorenzo Channel and a bit north to Puerto Escondido.
The East Cape: moderate NW today and tomorrow and light NE on Tuesday.
The Mexican Riviera: light SW for the next 3 days.
Finally the outside passage where I can finally give a descent passage report. The entire passage in the mid teens with the exception of Pt. San Quinten today and tomorrow where they will see ballpark 20 knot winds. Tuesday at Pt. San Quinten the wind should be in the mid teens like the rest of the passage.
