Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that as sister Lorena arrived at the cape as a tropical storm it looked like a lot of rain fell. I had an email this morning from San Jose del Cabo and she had only 1.1 inches of rain. There are currently no reporting stations on the west cape but checking several hotels for their rain totals it looks like most had a little over an inch so far from this storm.
As far as La Paz there are 4 reporting stations there and none are working this morning including the airport. The Baja Insider has not updated their weather in 3 days. You would have thought they would have noticed. Bottom line: no data from La Paz.
This morning Lorena is a mere shadow of her former self and I’ll get back to her in the Tropical Kitchen.
There is a post-tropical low parked over central Mexico that is contributing to the cloudiness in the Sea this morning. Most of the Sea this morning is at least partially overcast. The other contributor is Tropical Depression Lorena.
In the far northern end of the Sea several storms ventured out over water last night. One around Puerto Panesco where 39 knot wind were recorded, and the other in the vicinity of San Filepe. Over in Sonora a nice cell built around Nogales and moved across the Fence bringing what looked like rain to the Tucson area last night.
Looking now over to the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera this morning and from Mazatlan to Acapulco it looks like one solid thunderbumper.
Looking out into the Eastern Pacific basin I can see the ITCZ/Monsoon trough is very active this morning with numerous thunderbumper working well out to around 140.
Looking in our Tropical Kitchen this morning I can see that, as advertized, Lorena became depressed not long after passing the cape to the west. As a tropical storm she lasted 29 hours and at 9pm last nigh she was plutoed to a Tropical Depression. She is currently slowly plugging along around 106 miles SW of the cape this morning. She will be further plutoed to a post-tropical low within the next 24 hours. Winds speeds are currently around 30 and will drop to around 20 then.
Cloudiness from this storm has spread well north into the central Sea this morning. Here in Concepción Bay we had light rain for about an hour early this morning and I could here thunder back in the hill until around 5 this morning.
No more heavy rain is forecast thus the possibility of flooding in the arroyos has been diminished, but still possible. Be advised the fat lady ain’t sung yet!
Of Note: There are currently 3 Tropical Wave traversing the Atlantic this morning. Two are well out and one in just moving into Central America near Honduras this morning. That will be the one to watch.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where the Great Northwest will continue to scattered showers though the weekend. Sunday they should start to diminish.
In northern California no rain, but an unseasonal heat wave with San Francisco seeing temperatures in the 80s today. Inland valleys in triple digits.
In southern California it will continue to be hot and muggy. Even though is will be mostly overcast today in San Diego the temperatures will be in the low 80s. Isolated to scattered thunderbumpers will continue to be possible over the mountains and deserts in the afternoons and evenings over the weekend.
Looking now over to the southwest where it looked like they had few showers this morning. The forecast is for showers and thunderbumpers to continue to increase through the weekend and early next week as moisture increases from across the Fence, especially tomorrow through Tuesday. The second half of next week should see a little less monsoonal activity.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like from Cabo San Lucas to Concepcion Bay we could see a few showers today. Wind-wise moderate southerlies are on tap for the 3-day forecast period. The exception could be from Cabo Falso to Abreojos with that Tropical Depression in the vicinity the next couple of days.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The outside: The storm is only 100 miles off shore with winds in the 20-30k ranges today so you could see those ranges along the west cape to Mag Bay today. The official forecast is in the high teens though.
The northern Sea: mid teens today from the SE and the light SE winds Sunday and Monday.
The central Sea: moderate southerlies, mostly SE for the 3-day forecast period.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. It looks like mostly light SE or SW for the 3-day forecast period.
The East Cape: light mostly SE for the next three days.
The Mexican Riviera: Cabo Corrienties north: light SW. South of Cabo Corrienties: light mostly SE for the 3-day forecast period.
