Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that yesterday and a good part of last night most of the Sea has been cloud free. This morning there has been some thunderbumper activity to the east of Los Mochas. One of these cells has moved toward the coast and grown and is now spread out about half way across the Sea toward La Paz this morning. This last image is showing this cell and sister Lorena almost merging and the cape is just starting to see some rain. There has been a few thumpers to the north of los Mochas but all have stayed on land.
From around La Paz north the Sea looks to be cloud free this morning.
Looking south I can see sister Lorena around 211 miles due south of the cape chugging up toward the cape this morning. I’ll discuss her when we get into the Tropical Kitchen.
Along the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera it’s hard to find a place where there is not a thumper over it. Lots of rain along the coast first from Tropical Depression 9E and now from sister Lorena.
Further south we have a Tropical Wave entering Sea around Central America this morning. It will be looking for a lonely low to stimulate.
OK, now looking in our Tropical Kitchen this morning we have sister Lorena, formally Tropical Depression 9E, she is now a tropical storm and our 12th named storm in the Eastern Pacific basin. Original computer tracks were for her to skirt around to the west of the peninsula. She did not read the forecast and is now taking dead aim on the cape.
She has just a short time if she is to intensify today; otherwise the majority of the models have here hitting the cape at a tropical storm Saturday morning. An alternative...but unlikely scenario...is for Lorena to traverse the Sea of Cortez and retain tropical storm status for an additional couple of days as suggested by the GFDL model. There is an old weather adage that says, “The Sea of Cortez sucks”, meaning with the warm Temperatures and the low pressure in the Sea draws these storms into the Sea. Let’s hope that sister Lorena keeps a steady course toward the cape and becomes depressed where she arrived in Cabo tomorrow.
She should be spreading rain as far as Santa Rosalia by Monday.
That’s what is going on in out hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where up in the Great Northwest heavy rain will impact both Washington and Oregon today. The low will linger over eastern Washington tomorrow before exiting to the east early Sunday. It should dry out next week.
In northern California a fall heat wave will be cranking up today. Temperatures are forecast to be in the low to mid 100s in the inland areas over the weekend.
In southern California summer is not over yet. It will be hot and muggy through tomorrow. High pressure will continue to dominate the weather with temperatures 5-15 degrees above normal. Inland temperatures will peak around or slightly above 100 for areas within 10 miles of the coast. There is the possibility of some afternoon showers or thunderbumper that could moderate the heat a little, but not much.
Looking now over to the southwest where it will be hot and dry with only a chance of some thunderbumper activity today. Most of the action will be across the Fence and in southern California.
Tomorrow should start to see in increase in showers and thunderbumpers that should continue though the early part of next week. They should start to see a cooling trend on Sunday.
That’s what is gong on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like the entire Sea with the exception of the cape region will be seeing SW winds in the mid teens for today and tomorrow and the mid teens from the NE on Sunday.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: moderate SE today and tomorrow and light NE on Sunday.
The central sea: moderate southerlies for the 3-day forecast period.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Right now it looks like the San Lorenzo channel south will be seeing moderate southerlies for the 3-day forecast period, depending on what sister Lorena does. The cape region will be seeing high teens today and around 30 tomorrow when the storm is forecast to arrive.
The Mexican Riviera: strong winds around Mazatlan for the next 3 days to perhaps the low 20s.
As far as rain, it looks like starting tomorrow the peninsula will be seeing rain advance north over the next couple of days as the depression moves north over the peninsula. Right now it looks like it will progress slow so there is a good possibility of arroyos flooding. Be advised and take precautions if you are in one of these areas.
