Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that early last evening around Los Mochas thunderbumpers began developing and during the night more continued to develop and move north. By 3am a half dozen had moved out into the Sea pretty much blanketing the Sea with clouds and several rather large high topped thunderbumpers were as far south as Hermosillo in Sonora and San Francisquito Bay on the Baja side. By 7am not much has improved with the storms only slightly diminishing. It does not look like any actually completely crossed the Sea during the night.
Looking to the south along the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera we had two lows, invest 95 and invest 96 moving north along the coast and as of 5am were only 114 miles west of Manzanillo and producing gale force winds and producing locally heavy rain over portions along the coast. It currently looks like they will bring heavy rain to southern Baja starting tomorrow.
The track for 95 echo is to pass just to the west of the cape tomorrow and Friday. 96 echo is progged to hit Cabo head-on and possible move into the Sea.
Neither of these systems is expected to reach hurricane status however as I mentioned are packing lots of moisture and have the potential for flash flooding as well as strong winds.
Another item of interest in our Tropical Kitchen this morning is a tropical wave that is currently in the western Caribbean and moving into eastern Honduras and northeastern Nicaragua. It looks like El Salvador and Guatemala will also be affected.
Historically these August storms in this area have produced horrendous rains, flash flooding and life threatening mud slides. Hopefully this will not happen with this system.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where again the Great Northwest will see showers off and on to the end of the week.
In northern California there is a trough off the coast and will remain out there into the Labor Day weekend. This will be keeping the temperatures about normal, the storm track to the north and block monsoonal moisture from moving up into the north state.
In southern California monsoonal moisture will continue over southern California today with isolated afternoon thunderbumpers over the mountains and deserts. Additional moisture will enter the region tomorrow and continue into Friday bringing a greater chance of showers and thunderbumper to the southland. A gradual drying trend will develop over the weekend.
Of Note: there are over 3,000 firefighters fighting fires in the west. The giant wildfire burning at the edge of Yosemite National Park has not only destroyed buildings and threatened water supplies, electricity and sequoias, it has also unleashed a smoky haze that has worsened air quality more than 100 miles away in Nevada.
Looking now off to the southwest where the monsoon will be returning today with a strong shot of moisture from the south and southwest and will be accompanied by a mid level impulse moving up from Sonora today. This will lead to a quick increase in thunderbumper activity by this afternoon with some storms generating locally heavy rain. It looks like the rest of the week will see a good chance of afternoon and evening showers and thunderbumpers. This image is showing the state to be mostly clear with only the far SE corner seeing some moisture moving up from the south.
That’s what is gong on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like the entire Sea will be seeing strong southerly winds today and to a lesser extent tomorrow as well. Friday the winds will be mostly in the light to moderate ranges. That being said there is a good chance that a storm or storms will be in vicinity of the cape starting tomorrow and a chance that one will move into the Sea. We’ll see?
Disregarding that here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: around 23 today from the SE, 18 tomorrow again from the SE and then lay back down on Friday to be light from the NE.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: strong to around 20 today from the SE, tomorrow moderate SE and Friday moderate SW.
The Baja side of the central Sea: strong to 20 today from the SW, a bit less tomorrow and then light NE on Friday.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Strong to the high teens today and tomorrow from the SE and Friday light southerlies.
The East Cape: mid teens today picking up to around 20 tomorrow with the storms in the vicinity. Friday it looks right now for light southerlies.
The Mexican Riviera: from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrienties today 23-30 with the storm just off to the west. Tomorrow the storm will be north to the area and the winds will be in the moderate ranges from the SW.
