Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the Sea has some whispys over a good portion this morning. These are remnant clouds from thunderbumper activity over in Sonora last night.
There was considerable thunderbumper activity along the Sonoran coast with only a few small cells moving out into the Sea during the night.
This morning a rather large cell developed around Los Mochas and has extended out into the Sea as it breaks up it is providing a lot of remnant clouds in the area including the southern crossing.
Looking south to the Mexican Riviera where 90% of the storms along the coast are off the coast a ways and it’s pretty much solid all the way south to Central America this morning.
Further south the Gulf of Tehuantepec is clear this morning as well as the isthmus. Winds are forecast to be less than 10 knots today.
Looking now in our Tropical Kitchen where I had expected to see that invest 94 which is sitting around 500 miles south of the cape would have developed into at least a tropical depression by now. It’s a bit less organized than last night but is still in an environmental friendly area for tropical development. I’d expect that sometime today it will be upgraded to a named storm and that would be Ivo. Ivo is forecast to track NW then skirt the cape over the weekend and move in a northwesterly direction until it hits colder water.
There is a chance that this system will catch up with the low that is up in front (to the west) and the two merge.
The National Hurricane Center models are showing another low could develop south of Acapulco early next week.
Over in the Atlantic there are a couple of Tropical Waves heading this way. One is way out around 40W and of no concern at this time. The other is over the Yucatan peninsula this morning and will probably pass over the Tehuantepec isthmus on Saturday looking for a lonely low to stimulate.
It looks like our tropical season is cranking up.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where in general it will be fair and warm into the weekend for most of the west coast. A low off the California coast is drawing tropical moisture north and this will increase the chance of showers and thunderbumper in the Sierras into early next week.
Again lightning strikes from these storms are of high concern due to the tender dry forests along the west coast.
Looking now over to the southwest where it looks like they will have to wait until early next week for the monsoonal activity to crank up again. In the meantime the high is retreating to the east leaving the region dry or drier. There may still be enough moisture in the air for isolated afternoon and evening showers and thunderbumper though the work week.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence the forecasts are still showing moderate winds today and tomorrow then strong winds over the weekend.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period ONLY.
The northern Sea: it looks like brisk winds to 20 this morning and
Moderate winds this afternoon. Tomorrow light to moderate NE all day. Then strong winds from the SE in the high 20s on Saturday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: moderate SW today, moderate SE tomorrow, strong to 24 on Saturday from the SE.
The Baja side of the central Sea: light NE today, moderate SE tomorrow and then Strong SE on Saturday to around 30.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, and the nearby islands. Light NE today then around 20 from the SE on Friday and Saturday. For La Paz: today light NE, tomorrow SE to around 30 and Saturday SE in the mid 20s.
The East Cape: SE for the next 3 days. Light today then around 30 for Friday and Saturday.
The Mexican Riviera: they will continue to see mostly light SW for the 3-day forecast period. The exception is Mazatlan which looks like high teens today and tomorrow and around 25 on Saturday.
Now that being said there will most likely be a hurricane pass just to the west of the cape this weekend so these values could change dramatically. Be advised if you are in the area and prepare accordingly.
