Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that the Sea of Cortez has been pretty much cloud free for the past 24 hours. This morning there are some whispys in the far northern corner of the Sea but that’s it.
Looking over to Sonora where they have had virtually no thunderbumper activity in the past 24 hours.
Looking now south to the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera. I can see a fairly large, high topped cell just of the coast of Cabo Corrienties this morning. To the south there have been many thunderbumper during the night and many are still active.
In the Gulf of Tehuantepec and the Tehuantepec isthmus there has been considerable convection for the past 24 hours. There is a low developing just to the east of the Bay of Campache on the eastern end of the isthmus. The gradient between this and the relatively high in the Pacific should enhance the winds in the Gulf. However the current forecast is for winds around 10 knots for the next 3 days in the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Go figure?
There is also considerable convection all along the ITCZ/Monsoon trough that is pretty much tracking along 10N.
In our Tropical Kitchen this morning we have a wanna-be low about 500 miles SW of Acapulco that will probably become our next tropical storm early next week as is moves WNW at around 10 knots. Today and tomorrow the basin should be storm free.
Over in the Atlantic there are three Tropical Waves. One just left Africa so it’s about a week away. The next is over the Lesser Antilles and the last one is around 74W passing over Hispaniola.
Not much of a chance that any of this band of waves will be interacting with lows in our hood.
That’s what is happening in our hood this morning. Looking now north to the west coast of America where at the top of this image I can see that the Great Northwest will be seeing light showers along the coast and in the northern Cascades.
In northern California there is a low off the coast that will be bringing a good chance of showers this evening. It’s forecast to slide south tomorrow and remain rather stationary through Tuesday morning. This period of time appears to be when the shower and thunderbumper activity will be the greatest. The low is forecast to lift to the north Tuesday through Wednesday evening bringing an end of the showers and a gradual warming trend for the later part of next week.
In southern California that low off of the northern California coast will pull moisture from the south and a chance of showers and isolated thunderbumpers over the mountains and deserts. For the first part of next week it will be hot in the southland with inland temperatures in triple digits.
Looking now over to the southwest where the prognosticators at the National Weather Service have been suggesting all week that today the southwest should see a return to the monsoon. Well, strong ridging over head is keeping serious moisture from moving up from the south; however there is enough moisture under the high to bring a good chance of showers and thunderbumpers in the afternoons and evenings with the best chances for measurable rainfall to be over the higher terrain to the north and east. Until the high weakens and moves off to the east it will remain hot over the southwest with temperatures in triple digits.
Before leaving the southwest I want to mention that eleven states across the west are suffering under brutal Blazes as forecasters are warning that more wildfires could break out soon with strong winds and dry conditions in Idaho, Utah and Hawaii. That’s right I said Hawaii. They are saying that any fires are expected to exhibit extreme fire behavior. Over 3 million acres have burned so far, and several thousand firefighters are on the fire-lines this morning.
Back on this side of the Fence the only place we have wild fires is right around the Fence but not much further south.
Our winds in Baja for the next two days will be light to moderate southerlies and on Tuesday the light winds will come from the NE.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: moderate SE today, light SE tomorrow and Light NE on Tuesday.
The Guaymas side of the central Sea: light mostly SW winds for the 3-day forecast period.
The Baja side of the central Sea: in general light to moderate SE winds for the 3-day forecast period. The exception are Punta Chivato and Punta Concepción which are forecast to have light to moderate NE on Monday and Tuesday.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands. Light SE today, light SW tomorrow and light SE on Tuesday.
The East Cape: just mostly light southerlies for the next 3 days.
The Mexican Riviera: light, mostly SW winds for the next 3 days.
