Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see the cloudiness in the southern Sea did not clear until early afternoon yesterday then the sky over most of the Sea of Cortez was clear and has been for the most part clear over night.
There has been considerable thunderbumper activity in Sonora but this image is showing that most of it stayed on this side of the Fence.
Looking south to the west coast of Mexico and the Mexican Riviera I can see there has been considerable thunderbumper activity since around midnight around the Puerto Vallarta area. A very large cell developed there
and started slowly moving north and it is now centered over Mazatlan about half on land and half off shore.
A bit further down the coast I can see several smaller cells close to shore.
Further south I can see the Gulf of Tehuantepec is cloud free this morning and the winds are forecast to be light for the 3-day forecast period.
Looking out into the ITCZ/Monsoon trough there is a lot going on out there this morning. First just lots of convection then we have tropical storm Gil heading west. He will most likely become a himicane by tomorrow.
Right behind Gil is another low (90E) that (as advertized) popped up and is quickly developing and should become a tropical storm by this evening. Both these systems are in warm water so invest 90E (soon to be Henrietta) could also make hurricane status if Gil leaves any moisture in the air. They are basically on the same track.
So we have two items in our Tropical Kitchen this morning. If the long range forecast comes to pass another low will pop up in the next 24 hours. We’ll see?
We are marching right along with our storms in the Eastern Pacific basin this year. Already we have had 7 named storms and number 8 should occur by tomorrow. The early season hurricane forecast was for 14 named cyclones of which 6 would be tropical storms, four moderate hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes. So far 2 hurricanes and 4 tropical storms. With two more in the hopper right now both of which could reach minimal hurricane status before reaching cold water. Neither of these storms will affect land.
As far as any Tropical Waves, there are a couple in the Atlantic that are at least 4-5 days away.
That’s what is going on in our hood. Looking now north to the west coast of America where at the top of this image looking off the coast of Washington I can see that impulses rotating around a trough of low pressure located off the coast will be supporting showers and isolated thunderstorms in the Pacific Northwest, primarily over the Cascades.
In northern California temperatures will be in the 90s in the inland valleys and coastal fog in the mornings and evenings along the coast into the weekend when that low to the north starts to move east.
In southern California near average temperatures are on tap into the weekend with morning and evening coastal fog.
Surfer dudes and dudettes will be happy as “Surf’s up” in the southland with a south swell producing well above average surf.
Looking now over to the southwest where the several day break in thunderbumper activity has ended with scattered afternoon and evening thunderbumpers returning and continuing into the weekend. Another drying trend is expected this weekend into next week with low grade monsoon activity expected Sunday through next Wednesday.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence it looks like the northern Sea will continue to see light southerlies and the central Sea will see one more day of light northerlies before swinging to the south again tomorrow.
Here are the wind details for the 3-day forecast period.
The northern Sea: light SE today. Moderate SE tomorrow and Friday.
The central Sea, the Guaymas area: Moderate NW today then moderate SE Thursday and Friday.
The Baja side: light NE today then moderate SE for the next 2 days.
The southern Sea, the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz and the nearby islands: Light SE today then moderate SW for the next two days.
The East Cape: light SE for the 3-day forecast period.
The Mexican Riviera: Mazatlan moderate and the rest light SW for the next 3 days.
